Asus F3SV-B4 Review
- Pros: The quality of the computer is much better then the hp dv6707 was. The speed/responsiveness of the computer is very good. The Intel T7500 is much better than the dual core AMD processor I had in the hp (at similar clock speed) Not a lot of bloatware to remove. The first thing i did was add an extra 2GB of RAM (less than $80) that boosted it even more. The keyboard is very nice/responsive for typing. The screen appears to be brighter than my hp. Works great with photoshop, premiere and autocad.
- Cons: This is nitpicky, but not having a recessed button on the dvd/cd drive is driving my crazy. Every time i pickup the laptop, or adjust it for viewing, i manage to bump it open. It is the most sensitive button i have ever seen on a laptop. It is in no way a deal breaker. I still gave it a 5 because the quality and configuration cannot be beat for the price. Also the mouse can be a little sensitive, but there are plenty of adjustments for that.
- Other Thoughts: Overall, this is an excellent laptop. I would not hesitate to buy it again for the price. It has a very business like appearance to it. It is clearly an upgrade from a similar priced HP product. Also the 2 year warranty included with the price just clinched it for me!
Now that it's been a year...
- Pros: It was a great deal for a mobile GF 8600GS at the time - still is if you ask me. Makes a great dual-boot Vista/Sabayon Linux box. I don't game with it much, and I'm kind of old school. Lower screen resolution yields high frame rates at native resolution. Plays well with the nVidia SDK. DVI is a plus. Screen hinges have held up great - no bending or cracking plastic (see below for keyboard plastic).
- Cons: Dear ASUS
Now that I think about it, audio ports on the font? Bad idea when cables bend. Also recess the optical drive eject button a little more next time. I constantly bump it ejecting my media.
I have yet to find a plastic laptop that doesn't develop cracks at the corners of the keyboard after a few months - including this one. Next time, at least build an brushed aluminum frame or some solid reinforcement trim around the keyboard.
Screen is bright - but whoever started the glossy LCD thing obviously never has to use one. Users shouldn't have to see reflections or finger prints. Funky taper towards front can be awkward. Laptops should be square or at least have smooth edges.
I'm all about the laptop that still comes with a hardware volume wheel - would love to see it in every laptop. Nothing is more annoying than having a loud sound bite you as you scramble to find the FN key for sound or wait for sound drivers to pop up a fancy UI to tell you your volume is low.
- Other Thoughts: I reviewed this when I got it a long time ago and gave it a 5. I still think it's great, but if I were sipping Martinis with the ASUS designers in Tahiti, I'd give them my two cents.
If I see any of my recommendations show up in their tablet PCs, you can bet that will be my next purchase.
works great for me
- Pros: Great notebook... not best for gaming...but it will work fine! I play C.O.D 4, Witcher...not on the hightest settings of course but nice enough to have fun! I love mine!
- Cons: Trying to Get XP is not fun! Hard as He11 to get all drivers...stick with Vista...upgrade memory!
- Other Thoughts: Im in Iraq...its hot and dusty...mine is holding up great! If anything does happen to it while im here...theres a great warrenty!
