Good Value
- Pros: As noted by others, a lot of hardware for the price. The unit is fast, has enough memory to satisfy Vista, a good display, lots of option ports, and a nice design. The PC can be used with a higher res external monitor. I attached it to a 1650 x 1080 22 inch monitor and you can either switch over to it entirely, or keep both the LCD and the external monitor working for a dual desktop, sliding things between them. That compensates for the 1200x800 native resolution, which is fine for a 15 inch display.
Keyboard is good. Good action, separate numpad.
ESata is a big plus, although its one feature I haven't tried. I'd like to set up Ubuntu or Fedora, but don't want to risk a bootloader accident which would make me go through all of the reinstall/bloatware remove/MS updates all over again, even with the OEM recovery disk. So, I'll do that with an external drive, and boot from that when its plugged in. It should also be a way to get a faster drive on there, but that's a minor pl
- Cons: 1) Battery life with the 6-cell is not great. I'd say about 1 1/1 to 1 3/4 hours. It would be nice if the 9-cell was standard, or readily available as an option. 2) The multifunction touchpad takes some getting used to. Its pretty easy to hit the "Mode" area on the upper right when you are scrolling, and then its a multifunction switch rather than a cursor, so the cursor freezes You do get used to it eventually, although you have to look. Also, its not a big minus, because you get an optical mouse to plug into one of the 4 available USB ports.
- Other Thoughts: Asus has so many models that are nearly the same that it is confusing to figure what's best. The main variables are the processor, which is a moving target, the display density, HD size, memory, and whether or not you've got Blueray on the multidrive. For me, that's about the only thing missing.
A beast of a machine
- Pros: There is very little I can claim is iffy about this machine! Every feature listed is all included in the machine, runs very fast, and overall operates great!
- Cons: Vista requires A LOT of time to load for the first time. After a decent length setup, a lot of useless programs had to be removed (outdated Windows Defender, Norton, Office, ect ect). There were also a few Asus programs, but most were necissary
- Other Thoughts: For those laptop seekers looking for the bang for your buck, this machine is definately the one for you!

Great for Price
- Pros: Numpad on keyboard works wonders and you don't have to go out and buy a separate piece to attach to the laptop through one of the USBs. The touchpad is very "slick," where it has this very smooth, glossy feel to it. The power that comes with this computer and if you're looking for a gaming laptop this is a very good price for the power you get. I actually saw a laptop comparable to this and it was almost two times the price. The webcam and fingerprint scanner (after getting it to function) work wonders when it comes to logging in.
- Cons: The laptop hinge covers are very, very flimsy. I know that it's just a U shaped piece of plastic to cover some wires and that it just hooks in...but seriously, both broke within a month of purchase. I don't bang my laptop around so it's not that I'm not careful. Second, this problem might be Vista related...but if the battery is about to die and the computer self hibernates, the screen shuts off but the hard drive continues to run. Only a hard reset (on the back, not even a 4 sec power button hold) would turn off the computer entirely. Obviously, this is not a problem if you plan to have it plugged in the entire time. Third, if you don't configure your fingerprint scanner at the time of initial boot, it's a PAIN to set it up.
- Other Thoughts: There are a few really neat preloads that come with the laptop that are nice. But there aren't many so it's not that bad getting rid of the ones you don't want. The bag/mouse/other accessories add to the value that you get when you purchase this laptop.
Best Bang for your buck!
- Pros: This laptop is an AMAZING value!!! Its really fast for the price and packed full of features. The cpu and dedicated graphics card are both very powerful, and 4gb of memory just makes me smile (although i am only using 3 of it). Usually when you get a laptop at this price with these kind of specs, you really dont expect much more. Asus really outdid themselves on this one.
-Built in 1.3 megapixel webcam -Built in bluetooth technology -a built in card reader -fingerprint scanner for increased security (i couldnt get it to work all that well though) -the best touchpad i have ever used with cool built in media functions -an HDMI port for sending digital video to a tv or monitor -an esata port for really fast external hdds -a sexy appearance and feel (you really cant tell from the pictures) -a number pad (i think its cool) -comes with a pretty decent quality laptop bag
and best of all, all this stuff works! Its a solid laptop at a good price, buy it!
- Cons: i hate to repeat everyone else... but vista is a huge con. What makes it worse is asus doesnt provide drivers compatible for windows xp at all. You really have to pull your hair out to get xp to work (i did it though). Vista is the only reason i gave this product a 4 instead of a 5. The battery life is really short, so you should most definitey stay close to an outlet. good thing asus gives you a laptop bag to carry the laptop AND power supply around. Also, you can very easily game with this machine, but its not the PERFECT gaming experience. but it does do very well :) also, the lcd resolution isnt the greatest, but its fine for its size. only 3gb of memory is recognized in xp sp3 32 bit. I tested the dvd drive out after i installed xp, and it would only read a disk at 2x. i may have to do some tweaking.
- Other Thoughts: it transcodes a dvd already on the hdd to fit onto a 4.7gb disk in 6 minutes. It also showed 4gb or ram in vista out of the box. i bought this laptop to replace my old p4 640, geforce 6800gt rig. I wanted portability and performance but i like the desktop feel, so i still use my lcd monitor (better res) and keyboard/ mouse. (i also got a sata enclosure for my desktops hdds) its definitely fast, but i did notice that the 6800gt performed better in counter strike source (slightly). Took a while to get xp on it; you have to dig real hard for the drivers and you also have to slipstream the sata drivers into the xp disk. After that, you have to mod the graphics driver using mobility modder. CATALYST 8.7 WILL NOT WORK WITH XP, YOU HAVE TO USE 8.6! XP runs alot faster than vista :)
Working Well
- Pros: This is a great notebook that could be sold for $1500+ but the biggest Pro is all this great hardware for an amazing price. The other reviews hit all the major pros, 4GB DDR2 RAM, 2.5 GHz, ATI Radeon HD 3650. This is also great for games, there are many better gaming notebooks out there to find but none with as good a deal as this. I can play Company of Heroes at Medium-High settings with out a problem, Ultra High settings to see the frame rate drop to 20fps(I think that is Vista, the Hardware is 3x the recommended). Vista isn't always bad, I plug in my printer and it found the third party drivers ASAP! I highly recommend this computer.
- Cons: Vista.... I am not trying to repeat everyone else but it is true. If I had to pick one thing about this laptop that I do not like, then it would have to be Vista. SP1 only now allows me to see 4GB RAM, not utilize it. Vista takes some getting used too but the way Microsoft convinces everyone(Buys them out) soon Vista will over power XP in the business world(Microsoft Owns it all) and all the followers will soon be shouting how great Vista is and how old XP is.
- Other Thoughts: Vista take some getting used too.
I give this a 4/5 because mine came with a malfunctioning HDMI port, but I called ASUS(Their amazing super friendly support line, you just call up press 3 then 2 and your talking to someone NO INFO REQUIRED!) and with in 3 Business days I had this laptop 100% working. BTW MUST READ: this laptop has 4(FOUR) USB ports not 3. A port on the left side next to the HDMI port doubles as an IEEE 1394 and a USB port. Some wrote it only came with three... I must say that they are mistaken
