The M50Vm from Asus revolutionizes the way you get your entertainment on the go, and it can improve your privacy and productivity. The 15.4" screen has an AI Light feature which adjusts panel brightness depending on ambient lighting. They've also included their Splendid video technology with 5 modes and 3 skin tone settings to optimize the image depending on what you are viewing.

The webcam also works with face recognition software so you can log on with just a look, or for additional security use the fingerprint reader by the touchpad, which doubles as an audio visual control panel at the flick of a switch. The keyboard has a numeric keypad, something usually found in larger notebooks.

All of this functionality is great, but useless in isolation. So: there's a plethora of connection options, both wired and wireless. Circling the shell are 4xUSB, 1xFireWire, 1xRJ-11, 1xGigabit Ethernet, 1xHDMI and more. Wireless connectivity includes 802.11a/g/n and Bluetooth V2.1. A WiMAX transceiver lets you take advantage of the latest technologies.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

Pros: This is a nice piece of equipment. It started like a charm, the screen is nice and clear with no dead pixels. Vista is snappy. Office 2007 runs well. I have no problems with the wireless whatsoever.

If you don't like the extra buttons on the trackpad they can be turned off and/or configured in the driver.

The provided laptop bag is actually pretty decent. The provide mouse appears to be a rebranded Logitech. There are some other goodies too that are sort of "fun".

Cons: Shiny case makes fingerprints noticeable, but really - who cares.

Some crapware comes preinstalled. It is thankfully easy to remove (and not TOO plentiful).

Other Thoughts: A good value for the price I paid ($999)!

On a full charge I get about 2 hours worth of net surfing in before the battery goes out. That's with the default power settings the laptop ships with.

If your trackpad seems jumpy and unresponsive be sure to download the graphics driver from Asus. Mine laptop shipped with a bad driver that had the screen locked at 17 or 18hz instead of 60 like it was supposed to be. The driver update fixed it and now everything is smooth.

The fingerprint reader can be cantankerous if you don't get it programmed in with some decent fingerprints. If you find that it isn't letting you log in, redo your scans and it should be ok after that.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Good looking unit, mouse and bag are beter than I had thought. It plays games well, yes you have to adjust setting for best FPS but I didn't buy it just for that. Great bang for your buck great quality.

Cons: Vista 32! I can't believe they didn't put 64 vista on it.

5 out of 5 eggsfantastic computer

Pros: Everything has been great on this computer so far. I like the full number pad. Sound has been good despite some bad reviews. I didn't have the 18 Hz problem like some did, but it was easy to register online with ASUS and download exactly the right driver. The fingerprint scan and face recognition work well. Everything runs well, Vista takes 30% of the RAM but that still leaves 2.8Gb of ram for me. Very little bloatware, only had to remove a few things.

Cons: People I skype with had to turn their volume all the way up to hear me. I tried the microphone booster feature but that gave weird interference. Took a little bit to get used to the keyboard being shifted to the left to accomodate for the number pad.

Other Thoughts: This computer has everything i want and at a really good price. I would have bought it for more money, but newegg outdid themselves. Speaking of, every purchase I've ever made with newegg has been absolutely top notch. Best prices, fastest shipment, best customer service (not that i've needed it).

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast and beautiful. does everything you could want it to. Only gets warm, not too hot, on the bottom. Great graphics!

Cons: Vista 32-bit doesn't make full use of the 4GB RAM.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat!

Pros: Great laptop for the price! Fast enough to run anything I own. The fingerprint scanner is a fun gadget, but not really essential.

Cons: It came with a glitch in the NVIDIA drivers that locked the screen's refresh rate at 18hz. After registering the laptop with ASUS, I was able to download the most recent VGA drivers and now I'm running at a comfortable 60hz.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty Decent

Pros: All right things NOT in the description. You can control the volume, up or down with the FN and F- series keys. Along with brightness of the LCD display, mail, internet, bluetooth and wifi, sleep, and tv/LCD viewing. That part is awesome. Make's it easy to control most the operation without clicking thru lots of menus. Sound is a little "tinny" but still quite nice. The multi media controls are great on the touch pad. I did have a problem at first with this but after a couple hours it was not a problem. You can control from the top right corner of the touch pad. The full keyboard is quite nice though the whole laptop is wider then a 15.4 lappy but not really a problem. All the USB 2.0 are nice but the HDMI and ESATA are great. Come's with a camera and mic that are good but I will not use all that often. All the drivers programs are on a separate cd and listed individually. So you only install the things YOU want if you decide to reinstall to get rid of the bloatware. Awsome laptop

Cons: The auto brightness for the LCD is lousy. Sitting in my living room under a lamp it kept dimming the LCD. Hit the FN and A keys to disable it. The thing comes with about over a dozen items running in the taskbar. This all takes up memory and cpu power. 5400 rpm/8 meg cache hard drive for the regular price could have put in a 7200 rpm hard drive.

Other Thoughts: While it come with a 5400 rpm/8 meg cache hard drive it is easy to replace. 4 screws and remove the plate, there is the harddrive. While you are here, pick up a 7200 rpm/16 meg cache hard drive at Neweggs dirt cheap prices. I did and installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit, that I received free for testing Vista, now this thing flys. I bought this on sale here fro $999. I looked and compared laptops for 3 weeks. I was looking for a P8400 with a 7200/ 16 HDD, NVidia 9800 series video with a 15' screen with out going bankrupt. The only thing I found one at B had one made by Gateway for $1349. But every store in my state and the two sates near were out. They were some I found with the 9800 video card but the older T series cpu. Giving up up one meg L2 cache and 266 mgz on the FSB. Since I will take this on trip and do alot of video editing and some gameplaying, this is the best model. Besides BB customer service blows and NE is the best. Asus CS is great too. It does not have 2 HDD either just 1

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very good quality. Had no scratches or scuffs.

It plays games very well for its price. Can play L4D on highest settings with no AA and no AF at 25-70 fps usually averages at 40ish. You can play L4D with the same settings with the dedicated videocard off. This will save on battery time and reduce heat but expect the fps to be 15-25. Strangely turning the videocard on and off while the game is in motion does not cause a crash or anything noticeable.

There is no bloatware installed. Very quick. It takes 50 seconds from the time you push the "on" button to be at your desktop logged in. It takes 15 seconds to shut down.

Comes with very good warranties. Just make sure you register it to take advantage of those.

Webcam swivels and can face forward.

Already comes with East Asian Texts.

Keyboard is full sized.

Cons: The computer arrived with a bad video driver. It was stuck at 18hz. Made computer look VERY slow and laggy. Make sure you are ready to download a driver asap.

The drivers page for ASUS is terrible. There are multiple versions of each driver and it does a bad job telling you what you need. The drivers on that page are also outdated. ASUS releases newer drivers that work for your computer, but they never appear on your products page.

The pieces of plastic that cover the hinges come off easily. They don't feel solid and can be removed with minimal force. The rest of the notebook is solid though.

The microphone is useless. You have to be within an inch or two for it to pick up. If you turn up the sensitivity so it picks up from a comfortable distance then anything on your speakers will disrupt your recording as it will be much louder than you. Echo protection will not help this

It comes preloaded with Chinese typing support.

Other Thoughts: Its large for being a 15.4inch. It fits well in my bag designed for a 17incher.

The bag it comes with will fit the notebook but its a very tight squeeze and the bag doesn't have any padding on the top. The zipper will almost rub the front of your notebook when you put it in.

However the bag is very well designed and made and it will work for transporting the laptop but I think its not for everyday use.

The battery will last a max of around 4.5 hrs. This is with very low brightness, a black screen, wifi and bluetooth off, and in power saving mode.

While gaming at full brightness it will last around an hour.

ASUS has forums for people who register their hardware. There is an active forum just for this model of notebook. That makes it very easy if you have a problem or question.

The extras that come with the laptop are very nice and high quality as well. ASUS branded Logitech Optical Notebook mouse, ASUS messenger bag, cable tie for your ac plug, screen cleaning cloth

5 out of 5 eggsBetter than expected!

Pros: I did quite a lot of research before purchasing this notebook because I wanted something of a showpiece for my clients. ASUS has not let me down. Here are the pros:
*Tons USB ports
*IR port
*Wireless N
*Gigabit NIC
*Fingerprint ID that actually works
*Full size keyboard with number pad
*Beautiful display
*Dedicated 1GB nVidia Display
*Firewire port
*HD sound
*Adjustable webcam
*Great feeling of quality
*Comes with optical mouse and notebook bag included
*2 Year warranty including 1 year accidental damage
*Not loaded down with bloatware.

Cons: There are a few cons, however as follows:
*Webcam is only 1.3 Megapixel. ASUS could have gone with 2 Megapixel
*Smartlogon (picture ID) is spotty so far
*Package includes S-video to Component cable but this model does not have the port for it
*WXGA instead of WXGA+
*Included mouse is somewhat flimsy
As you can see, the cons are pretty small compared with the pros for this system.

Other Thoughts: Before buying the ASUS I looked at HP, Dell, Toshiba, Acer, MSI, and Samsug models. while many have great features for the money, I couldn't find anything that compared to the ASUS overall. My wife is already trying to talk me into replacing her Acer with one of these.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good value

Pros: This is my first laptop. I have used many over the years but never actually owned one. I researched for a few weeks before deciding on this model. This machine is fast and well built. The carrying case and external mouse are icing on the cake. Newegg packaged it up nice and shipped it out fast.

Cons: Its so pretty and shiny that its hard not to smuge it up with fingerprints. Vista 32. Why did they split the HD into two partitions? The fist thing I did was remove the empty "data" partition and merge the space to the Vista partition.

Other Thoughts: In order to take advantage of the 4gb, you will need to do a clean install of Vista 64. Get your hands on an OEM Vista disk and use your Vista 32 key. Activation was automatic for me with no issues from Microsoft. The driver disk is simple to use and installs only what you want and has 64 bit drivers and applications too.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Notebook

Pros: This computer is powerful. I can run almost anything on it. The fingerprint logon is very useful, not the gimmick I thought it might be.

Cons: The touchpad is terrible. I accidentally turn on the media features of the pad several times a day. Also, the plastic case creaks like a clipper ship when I pick it up. Makes it feel a little fragile.

Other Thoughts: This computer is well worth it, just use an external mouse.
