The M51Ta from Asus revolutionizes the way you get your entertainment on the go. Plus it has features to increase your privacy and productivity. They've included their Splendid video technology with 5 modes and 3 skin tone settings to optimize the image depending on what you are viewing.
The webcam also works with face recognition software so you can log on with just a look, or use the fingerprint reader by the touchpad for additional security. It also doubles as an audio visual control panel at the flick of a switch. The keyboard has a numeric keypad, something that is usually found in larger notebooks.
All of this functionality is great, but useless in isolation. That's why there is a plethora of wired and wireless connection options. Circling the shell are 4xUSB, 1xFireWire, 1xRJ-11, 1xGigabit Ethernet, 1xHDMI and more. Wireless connectivity includes 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth V2.1.

Updated review...
- Pros: I already wrote a review of this laptop, but upon further tweaking I just have to say that this computer is amazing.
- Cons: The computer takes a little tweaking to get working completely bug free, mostly as a result of Vista more than anything
- Other Thoughts: Ok, if you buy this laptop and you don't want to have issues with the keyboard lagging or anything like that, don't install the touchpad software and don't install "keyboard filter" on the drivers disk (use the advanced button ont he drivers disk to uncheck these from the menu). If you don't disable those two items you will most likely have problems with the keyboard. It's not noticeable if you type slowly, but if you're like me and upwords of 90+ wpm you'll have to take some meds to calm yourself down until you figure out that you should just take my advice. Also, I just went to the ATI website for the video drivers and downloaded Catalyst 8.7 to update my video drivers, the one that is on the cd isn't the newest one out, and upon doing so I refreshed my vista rating and I now have a 5.0 average score. This laptop is amazing and the 1440x900 screen makes all the difference.
great budget laptop
- Pros: * Expressgate - what a great idea. In case you don't know what Expressgate is, it's a mini-OS built into Asus' newest laptops. It boots in a few seconds! It has a full-featured Web browser with Flash 9 support, a mail client, a Skype client, and an IM client. I took the laptop on a trip, and whenever I needed to get quick access to the Web or chat, I just booted up Expressgate. It was really convenient!
* 1440x900 resolution with a dedicated video card. This is one of the few 15.4" laptops with a high resolution and dedicated video card that costs less than $1000.
* Numeric keypad. At first, I thought its numeric keypad would be bad because of the non-standard layout, but I found it was easy to get used to. I wish the + key was slightly larger, but the keypad is fine otherwise.
- Cons: * As a previous reviewer said, the keyboard filter driver that comes with the laptop interferes with fast typing. I ended up going to the Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Filter and uninstalling it (and deleting the driver software so it wouldn't reinstall). Now the laptop generally keeps up with my typing, although it still misses some keypresses when I type fast. Thus far, I'm afraid of uninstalling the touchpad software as the previous reviewer recommends, but I might if I continue to have typing issues.
* The screen is one of the most reflective screens I've ever had with a laptop. (Admittedly, this is the first mass-produced laptop I've ever owned; I usually buy custom laptops with anti-glare and anti-reflective features.) However, the screen is still better than almost any other budget laptop's screen that I've ever seen.
* Unlike many other laptops, there is no separate volume control on the keyboard. One must use Fn-F11 and Fn-F12 to adjust the volu
- Other Thoughts: This is the best budget laptop I've ever seen. If I was not reviewing based on the price, I'd give this laptop a 4/5 since it has features that I would normally have upgraded on a custom laptop. However, as a budget laptop, I don't think I could give it anything less than 4.5/5, and I like it so much I'm giving it a 5/5.

ASUS ROCKS!!!!!
- Pros: first off, this thig is blazing fast... the cpu is one of the best out there under AMD's mobile cpu standards. the WiFi is just the way its supposed to be. bluetooth is so much more convenient than i thought, webcam is fun to play with (lots of features built into that program), i didn't have any issues with lagging keyboard, the keyboard layout is great, super sleek paint job though it attracts fingerprints like crazy, the graphics in this thing is amazing! 512 megs dedicated VRAM and my system shows 1688 megs "hyper memory which im assuming means it uses some shared memory if necessary. the graphics card runs COD4 flawlessly way maxed out (tho i had to update the drivers to do so) the 1440 x 900 res is crystal clear. all in all, great buy, especially at 20% of MSRP ($800). the ram is DDR2 800 in case anyone was wondering. i was curious about that before i bought and was gonna buy some 800MHz mem at the same time but decided to hold off.
- Cons: the only issue i had was with the bluetooth... i first attempted to run vista ultimate x64 to take advantage of all 4 gig of system memory, come to find out the bluetooth drivers will not fully function under a 64bit platform. i looked all over the web and cant find anything. any help would be greatly appreciated.
- Other Thoughts: nothing that wasnt mentioned above
Love It
- Pros: For the price as i bought it, It can't be beat. 32bit vista meant that my programs would be installed with less hassle. It runs pretty fast, and the screen is beautiful. I work at staples, and all of our comps for 799 don't even come close. The asus warranties are amazing as well.
Windows Exp Rating 5.0 Processor-5.0 (2.20ghz) RAM-5.9 (3gb utilized) Graphics-5.4 Gaming Graphics-5.1 Primary Hard Disk-5.3
Pretty Darn good for a "retail" laptop at this price.
The Webcam looks good, and you can flip it outward facing away from you, which is a pretty neat thing. You could hypothetically record someone totally unaware as you type away on your notebook.
The mouse is decent, better than any gateway, toshiba, hp, dell or acer anyway.
The N card is noticable. i seem to be getting a stronger signal. Have yet to try bluetooth.
The finish looks fantastic, with subtle graphics aidst the glossy black exterior.
Almost NO bloatware, Which will save me the time deleting it.
- Cons: The Speakers and sound come nowhere near my hp zv6000 from 05, but then again it seems sound quality and volume is something nb manufacturers just don't seem to care about anymore, even hp. (nb's are too thin for decent speakers now i'm guessing) the sound isn't bad though.
Its a little on the heavy side, feels like a 17incher, but i'm used to big laptops, and this is almost as big as my 17zv6000.
So far no major keyboard problems, and heat doesn't seem to be an issue at all.
I do not like the way the case was put together though, when i rest my hand over the edge near the touchpad i am constantly scraping up against the plastic casing. i wish they would have made all the edges smooth, and the latch is odd, but that is just nitpicking.
And I wish there were more usb ports on the sides, 2 are nice on the back, but 1 on the front and right only? the Front? Do they know this is a laptop? and my favorite spot is on the left but there are sadly none there.
- Other Thoughts: Still getting used to Vista, and will be importing programs as soon as i'm sure it's ready. I can not wait to try out CS4 on this. Still no Regrettable problems as of yet. I Highly recommend this computer.
Very nice for the price.
- Pros: Amazing deal for the price. Plenty of RAM. This laptop has two graphics chips, one for high performace, and one for powersaving. Decent sounding speakers, after tweaking, with the included driver. Face recognition is pretty cool. Very nice laptop.
Also, great warranty: the first year, if there are any accidents (power surge, spills, drops), ASUS replaces the laptop, no questions.
- Cons: Comes with Vista preinstalled. What's to say? Also comes with only the 32-bit OS, so not all 4 gigs are utilized.
- Other Thoughts: Didn't experience the problem with delayed keyboard. Touchpad feels different, but you eventually get used to it.
Be sure to download the latest BIOS update from ASUS's website. It fixes the problem the with blank screen, fan blowing 100% when waking from standby, as well as allowing Linux to boot, on the laptop.
However, ATI's current Catalyst video drivers for Linux don't support the PowerXpress function yet. Until then, the laptop will run hot while in Linux.
The safest way to update the BIOS: first download the file (M51TaAS.207) and save it to C:\ drive. Make sure that the battery is fully CHARGED, then restart the computer, press F4 at boot to start the built-in EasyFlash tool (don't use the one installed in Vista). From EasyFlash, select C:, then select the file you downloaded, and flash it. Wait, it should tell you that it flashed successfully, then it displays a prompt, saying that the laptop will shutdown in two seconds. Turn it back on, boot up, enjoy!
