5 out of 5 eggsASUS ROCKS!!!!!

Pros: first off, this thig is blazing fast... the cpu is one of the best out there under AMD's mobile cpu standards. the WiFi is just the way its supposed to be. bluetooth is so much more convenient than i thought, webcam is fun to play with (lots of features built into that program), i didn't have any issues with lagging keyboard, the keyboard layout is great, super sleek paint job though it attracts fingerprints like crazy, the graphics in this thing is amazing! 512 megs dedicated VRAM and my system shows 1688 megs "hyper memory which im assuming means it uses some shared memory if necessary. the graphics card runs COD4 flawlessly way maxed out (tho i had to update the drivers to do so) the 1440 x 900 res is crystal clear. all in all, great buy, especially at 20% of MSRP ($800). the ram is DDR2 800 in case anyone was wondering. i was curious about that before i bought and was gonna buy some 800MHz mem at the same time but decided to hold off.

Cons: the only issue i had was with the bluetooth... i first attempted to run vista ultimate x64 to take advantage of all 4 gig of system memory, come to find out the bluetooth drivers will not fully function under a 64bit platform. i looked all over the web and cant find anything. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Other Thoughts: nothing that wasnt mentioned above

5 out of 5 eggsLove It

Pros: For the price as i bought it, It can't be beat. 32bit vista meant that my programs would be installed with less hassle. It runs pretty fast, and the screen is beautiful. I work at staples, and all of our comps for 799 don't even come close. The asus warranties are amazing as well.

Windows Exp Rating 5.0
Processor-5.0 (2.20ghz)
RAM-5.9 (3gb utilized)
Gaming Graphics-5.1
Primary Hard Disk-5.3

Pretty Darn good for a "retail" laptop at this price.

The Webcam looks good, and you can flip it outward facing away from you, which is a pretty neat thing. You could hypothetically record someone totally unaware as you type away on your notebook.

The mouse is decent, better than any gateway, toshiba, hp, dell or acer anyway.

The N card is noticable. i seem to be getting a stronger signal. Have yet to try bluetooth.

The finish looks fantastic, with subtle graphics aidst the glossy black exterior.

Almost NO bloatware, Which will save me the time deleting it.

Cons: The Speakers and sound come nowhere near my hp zv6000 from 05, but then again it seems sound quality and volume is something nb manufacturers just don't seem to care about anymore, even hp. (nb's are too thin for decent speakers now i'm guessing) the sound isn't bad though.

Its a little on the heavy side, feels like a 17incher, but i'm used to big laptops, and this is almost as big as my 17zv6000.

So far no major keyboard problems, and heat doesn't seem to be an issue at all.

I do not like the way the case was put together though, when i rest my hand over the edge near the touchpad i am constantly scraping up against the plastic casing. i wish they would have made all the edges smooth, and the latch is odd, but that is just nitpicking.

And I wish there were more usb ports on the sides, 2 are nice on the back, but 1 on the front and right only? the Front? Do they know this is a laptop? and my favorite spot is on the left but there are sadly none there.

Other Thoughts: Still getting used to Vista, and will be importing programs as soon as i'm sure it's ready. I can not wait to try out CS4 on this. Still no Regrettable problems as of yet. I Highly recommend this computer.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice for the price.

Pros: Amazing deal for the price. Plenty of RAM. This laptop has two graphics chips, one for high performace, and one for powersaving. Decent sounding speakers, after tweaking, with the included driver. Face recognition is pretty cool. Very nice laptop.

Also, great warranty: the first year, if there are any accidents (power surge, spills, drops), ASUS replaces the laptop, no questions.

Cons: Comes with Vista preinstalled. What's to say? Also comes with only the 32-bit OS, so not all 4 gigs are utilized.

Other Thoughts: Didn't experience the problem with delayed keyboard. Touchpad feels different, but you eventually get used to it.

Be sure to download the latest BIOS update from ASUS's website. It fixes the problem the with blank screen, fan blowing 100% when waking from standby, as well as allowing Linux to boot, on the laptop.

However, ATI's current Catalyst video drivers for Linux don't support the PowerXpress function yet.
Until then, the laptop will run hot while in Linux.

The safest way to update the BIOS: first download the file (M51TaAS.207) and save it to C:\ drive. Make sure that the battery is fully CHARGED, then restart the computer, press F4 at boot to start the built-in EasyFlash tool (don't use the one installed in Vista). From EasyFlash, select C:, then select the file you downloaded, and flash it. Wait, it should tell you that it flashed successfully, then it displays a prompt, saying that the laptop will shutdown in two seconds. Turn it back on, boot up, enjoy!

5 out of 5 eggsGood Laptop...

Pros: This computer is great!!... It does all that i need it to, i can play games no prob. the picture is awesome this is my first computer with vista so far so good i hear all these horror stories about vista and i havnt had an issue yet "Knock on wood"

Cons: the only cons i have for some reason in the upper left hand area of the keyboard, it keeps popping up nothing major it dosn't mess with typing i just have to push the esc. key to get it back in. also the latch to open the lid is bad it was poorly designed...and its black so it smudges easily

Other Thoughts: the cons are just that i love this computer my cons are just nit picks aside from the keyboard issue but i would deff. recommend this machine

5 out of 5 eggsworks nicely

Pros: This laptop has very nice specs, 4 gigs of ram ensure that i never have problems switching between apps (even burning a dvd while playing games gave me no trouble).
the performance issues that i've run into have been problems with vista, not the hardware.

Cons: the keyboard issue was annoying at first, but a clean install of vista (i installed the 64 bit version to take full advantage of the 4 gigs of ram and i used the same key that came with the system, there is no difference between 64 bit and 32 bit vista) and when i reinstalled the drivers from the cd provided i simply did not install the keyboard filter drivers nor the touchpad drivers. both work perfectly for me, and no keyboard lag issue.

the fan was annoying, and so was the screen not coming on after coming out of sleep, but that was fixed in the latest bios update (207).
the latest bios update did not come directly through ASUS, but the link is on the notebook review web page (google m51ta and you'll see it).

Other Thoughts: well worth the price for me

the notebook review thread on this notebook saved my life, and that is what makes this notebook as good as it is

2 out of 5 eggsSerious ACPI Issues

Pros: This laptop has good specs. Nice video card, the processor is fast, it has lots of ram, high resolution screen, and the hard drive is a good size. It looks great on paper, but IT HAS SOME SERIOUS ISSUES...

Cons: This laptop has some serious ACPI (power) issues. Because of these, you can't install linux. If you put the laptop into standby mode, it will BLAST the fan at 100% non-stop until you turn it off and pull out the power. Sometimes it even just crashes.

If you shut the lid of the laptop the screen will often not come back up again and will stay black. Even if you manage to hibernate the laptop, the screen will STILL be black when it comes up again.

The laptop often crashes or blue screens. If you are running on power, shut down, and then later boot up off battery, the laptop will crash when windows loads and have to reboot.

IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME, just Google for "m51ta fan" and see you for yourself. These issues happen right out of the box. I encourage everyone who already bought this laptop to CHECK YOURS FOR ISSUES, and then come collaborate with us on the Notebook Reviews forum to try to figure these out.

Other Thoughts: I was excited at first. It plays games great, and has a lot of power and a high resolution screen. However, the SERIOUS ACPI issues negate any kind of mobility for it. ASUS has not fixed these issues and for the most party denies they exist.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks fine now

Pros: Great laptop plays all the games i want. Love having a number pad on the keyboard.

Cons: When I received the laptop the wireless card didn't work and windows would not update. I fixed this by using the recovery CD and reformatting the computer. A new computer should never have to be reformatted its first day.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome PC

Pros: The computer works great. It detected the 4gb of ram. The keyboard does not lag, and i am a pretty fast typer.
Boots up very fast. The screen looks great, the camera looks sweet. It's a great pc for the price. 512mb dedicated video card is pretty awesome.

Cons: The speakers do not sound awesome, they are good but i liked the ones on my old laptop better, but speakers, aslong as you can listen to stuff they work.
It comes preloaded with 2 partitions.. one with the OS and the other just for data storage. It bring windows vista 32 not 64bit.

Other Thoughts: It's a great computer has a couple things that i do not like, but those few things do not change my mind about the laptop, its a great laptop specialy for the price.

4 out of 5 eggsupdate to "Flawed Keyboard Design"

Pros: Good hardware all around

Cons: Bugs with drivers which cause problems with keyboard. Keystrokes will end up not registering and you will have missing letters in your typing.

**see other thoughts for the fix to this problem

Other Thoughts: In order for my keyboard to properly register keystrokes I uninstalled the "synaptics touchpad utility"
to do this
1) start menu
2) control panel
3) uninstall a program
4) select the synaptics program and uninstall it
5) restart computer

Vista should automatically install its default drivers which will work with the touchpad

If this does not fix it, try uninstalling the keyboard filter driver through the hardware manager. controlpanel>hardware&sound>keyboard(check keyboard status)>properties>change settings>driver tab>uninstall>check delete driver box>ok

I uninstalled the keyboard filter driver first and still had problems. Once I uninstalled the synaptics utility the keyboard began to function properly, so I re-installed the keyboard filter driver and it continued to function properly.

if you are having keyboard problems
1) uninstall synaptics touchpad utility
2) if there are still problems, uninstall keyboard filter driver

I sincere

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good

Pros: Works well with Vista Ultimate x64 and Windows 7 beta. Dedicated 512MB graphics and 4GB of system ram.

Cons: A little hard to open and close the lid, but I'm thinking this will get better with time. Hard drive is a bit small for my tastes, but I'll probably buy a small external to compensate.

Other Thoughts: My laptop came with a tv tuner port, which I was not expecting, however you need an adapter to use it.... Well, there was an S-Video to RCA adapter, but no S-Video port.... only the TV antenna port..... Waiting to hear from ASUS on this.
