1000He Review
- Pros: A good fun little computer. Great for traveling, except for the issues listed below.
Great battery life, and easy to wirelessly connect to whatever you have.
- Cons: Returned 3 times in 10 months for repair.
1. The headphone jack failed and needed repairs. (several times) 2. The hard drive would not work in a pressurized aircraft, or above 8000 ft. or more above sea level.
- Other Thoughts: This was a good little computer, but it spent 5 of 9 months in ASUS's RMA dept.
This unit is going to be sold for whatever I can get for it, and I'm looking at the HP's.
Tested for about a year
- Pros: Was looking for a portable option with long battery life for travel and "insurance" that if it broke or got fried on bad power sources then I wouldn't be too disappointed (= "cheap").
It has proved to be everything mentioned in the NewEgg comments--reliable, about 6.5 h of power, good for airplanes, small screen but do-able, and yes, fingerprints (mud washes off well). Low bloatware, good for single activities. Types well once you're used to it. really perfect for watching NetFlix on-demand movies when not working. Use to VPN into my main box in my office; works great. Fits in the seat pocket in front of you on the plane, and tucks into a shoulder bag or briefcase without noticing. Pretty burly design, though I have not dropped it on purpose (yet). Great screen resolution and works well with skype (cam installed). The long power cable is a definite plus.
My wife wants it so I'm shopping for another, looking at eee as the prime candid
- Cons: The smaller screen is a bit of an issue if you are really needing to get things done. I am a consulting scientist and bought for a field computer and general in-touch device. The small screen has limitations when running GIS or other graphic needs; processor speed shouldn't be considered stellar, but it's a <$400 NETBOOK. The fact that stuff even starts up is a wonder.
Other cons: the volume and general system adjusts (brightness, etc.) requires function+key operation (big deal). The touchpad sometimes gets hit by my thumb and moves the cursor when I don't want it to. The CRT plug in has no screws to lock down if you want to use a projector (i.e. can loosen up on you and break the project contact).
Probably the biggest con is that I chose a small netbook and what I probably really needed was a slightly bigger netbook (hence my shopping now) -- mainly for screen size when I need to work abroad.
- Other Thoughts: I immediately upgraded the RAM to 2GB and it didn't flinch and ran better.
I wiped the disk clean and partitioned into 3 parts--1 for XP, 1 for Ubuntu linux (upgraded to the 9.10 karmic netbook remix), and 1 for files. Easy grub dual boot and both worked well. Ubuntu figured everything out and didn't need to hassle at all. The overall objective of this machine is to remain "empty" of important files, exporting off the machine when I get back to my office. Works great in that capacity.
Overall a very good little machine that's way worth the money if you understand the utility and limitations of a netbook.
Great Little Computer
- Pros: If you are looking for a bare bones mini computer just to be able to browse the internet, play music, video, and photos, look no farther. As with all netbooks, this computer is small, lightweight, and easy to use. Where it excels is the keyboard size, touchpad multitouch/multifunction, and the long battery life 7+ hours on a full charge.
- Cons: Wish the screen could be bigger, but it is a physical impossibility when portability is the name of the game.
