Very Impressive
- Pros: First of all, this laptop looks SO cool. There are blue lights around the mousepad, as well as on the back (a strip on each side and one illuminating the Republic of Gamers logo). The black and orange looks very sleek. Performance wise you almost can't beat the hardware for $999. The cpu is an average 2.4Ghz, but the 9800M GS card smokes every game I have installed so far (haven't tried Crysis yet). Express Gate quick-booting OS is a very cool feature. The Direct Console software allows software-level overclocking of the cpu...you can take it to 2.5Ghz or 2.63ish. This laptop has 2(!) internal SATA hard drive slots, allowing for insane amounts of storage space. Also includes just about every type of port you can dream of (firewire, VGA, HDMI, eSATA, etc). The small screen above the keyboard is very cool...it's customizable and can display battery %, cpu and ram usage, as well as any text you want.
- Cons: Other reviews are correct about the battery life...it's very short. Not a big concern for me. If you game a lot you will need to flash the bios to the 213 version, as the version it comes with does not run the fan for the components very well. My original GPU temps were around 95c while gaming, but after the bios update they run at a much more comfortable 80c.
- Other Thoughts: Be sure you sign up for the 1 year fully accidental warranty, as you only have 30 days to do it. To sum it up, if you seek a sick looking high performance laptop to impress your friends with, look no further!!
Excellent Value
- Pros: Excellent specs for the price, LED accents are a nifty touch, secondary OLED screen helped to get me off the fence on this buy, touchpad responds accurately and quickly, keyboard layout feels a bit odd for some reason but overall, fairly spacious for a notebook that also includes a number pad.
- Cons: The screen isn't the best but to be honest it really doesn't bother me all that much. Factory settings for the LED accent strips are terrible, something like being in a rave with all the flashing and what not. Little bit heavier than I expected and of course the battery life isn't exactly spectacular. High gloss finish on the lid is prone to micro scratchs and smudging.
- Other Thoughts: I built a few similarly specced models on dell and alienware, and hp and the value to spec ratio for this laptop was far better than any of the more popular brands. This particular package came with a great backpack which fits the laptop perfectly, it also came with a ASUS Republic of Gamers branded Razer Copperhead mouse which is a $69 value alone. All in all if you're looking for a mid-range budget gaming laptop this is an excellent choice. I've run L4D and Prototype on some of the highest settings available without so much as a hiccup. As a side note the circle on the bottom of the laptop is a fan, not a subwoofer for those who were curious. Additionally NewEgg had this item delivered to my deployed location in Afghanistan in 1 calender week! Excellent shipping speed and customer service.
Fantastic Notebook
- Pros: Great for the money, absolutely staggering performance in all games i've played so far at full detail setting, I've had NOTHING lag. The wireless N is lightning fast (As long as you've got the router and line to back it up) and the LEDs on the top make people stop and do a double take (Which is always cool). The Asus backpack and Razer Copperhead gaming mouse was such a sweet bonus. If you buy this notebook you get a FREE upgrade to Windows 7 once it's released, which just sweetens the deal.
- Cons: Vista is horrible, hands down. My screen has ONE dead pixel. Contacted ASUS, they said that if it were a Bright pixel they could replace it for free, but since it's only one dead one, there was nothing they can do. It's not noticeable, I only noticed because the screen was 100% white loading some software and i thought it was dirt, but it wasn't. This is the ONLY reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5. The 30 day ZBD Policy on the Asus tech support website (I even contacted a tech support rep and confirmed) is for bright pixels only, or 3 or more dead (black) pixels. Also the Keyboard is a little laggy at times, and the speakers could be louder.. Keyboard is a driver issue, speakers don't bother me, I use headphones.
- Other Thoughts: Was going to purchase the G50VT-X6, which has a higher screen resolution, then it jumped from $1249.99 with a $100 mail in rebate, to $1549.99, the same day I saw Newegg got these in stock. I was a little worried about the screen resolution being lower, but it doesn't bother me at all. I can hook it up via HDMI to my 32" LCD that i use as a computer monitor on my main PC and run it in a higher res when I want to. I don't regret my choice at all.
