1 out of 5 eggsGood while it lasted

Pros: Nice design
Light
Good while it lasted

Cons: Hard drive problem after 6 months of slight use

Other Thoughts: I am extremely disappointed at Asus in general right now. I this notebook about 6 months ago on Newegg.com and it is now freezing nonstop and it seems to be the hard drive making weird scratching noises. I've called over 8 times to "Asus Tech Support" and I've been disconnected while waiting for an actual human being to speak to me. The one time that I got to an actual Asus rep, he asked if it was my first time calling for tech support and upon saying 'yes,' he hung up...

I want to let you guys know that I treat this notebook with care and has never been through any kind of impact, not even the slightest. I've been a long time customer of Asus motherboards, video cards, notebooks, etc, but I will not stand for this type of service where I cannot get a hold of of any information at all of how to send this back for service.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome laptop, minus the terrible touchpad.

Pros: First thing I did was wipe the drive and install 7 with a retail disc. Windows 7 64bit includes drivers for everything except the ACPI device.

The sound quality is great, the speakers are loud and clear.

Build quality is 9/10. no flex anywhere. No creaks either =/

Screen is bright and very clear, anything over 50% hurts my eyes. However vertical and horizontal viewing angle are poor.

Webcam has a very good quality image, visible in low light without a great deal of graininess. But see cons for one minor issue.

Battery life is GREAT. I'm getting 10.5hrs using firefox and word with 20% LCD, CPU set to 800mhz, and wireless on.

720p video compressed with x264 plays at 40fps at 60% CPU util.

the SU7300 doesn't play around. Excellent mix of power management with performance.

Fits an airplane food tray perfectly.

Cons: THE TOUCHPAD!!! first, there are no edge markers so you can glide your finger right off of it. Second, the sensitivity is HORRID. When I want to scroll, it loses track sometimes and clicks on random stuff.

The touchpad buttons are on a single bar which is VERY difficult to click. you have to click at the far edges or deal with the very strong resistance. I'm hoping they will soften up as I use it. I'd rather they be too strong than too late.

The video camera is upside down - the stock windows drivers will work but net you an upside down image. You will need to install the drivers from ASUS website which invert the image at the software level. Not really a big deal.

Other Thoughts: I'm pretty sure battery life could be improved by using all ASUS drivers, but right now im using WDDM drivers for everything except ACPI and the webcam. The only other system util I installed was the hotkey and wireless switch utilityies.

As far as I can tell, the USB ports only supply 150MA per port - this could be an issue for external drives. Just FYI. I used a flash drive to install OS because my USB powered cdrom wouldn't power up.

5 out of 5 eggsBattery for days

Pros: Battery life
low heat
slim
nice win7 restore disk

Cons: Bundled hard disk slow
no optical drive
Touchpad is weird

Other Thoughts: TN display is so-so but has hdmi plug for VA/IPS external. Replaced drive with Vertex 2 which greatly increased speed. Optical drive for Eee PC was $50 on newegg which works well with dual USB. This laptop battery is more like a phone than typical laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: This laptop is great, and for the money you can't beat it. It's super slim and does what I needed to do.

Cons: No DVD-rom, it does not come with any rom at all, it would have been nice by ASUS to at least include a cd-rom or something.

Other Thoughts: on sale for $599, it's a great laptop. I just have to spend 50$ to get an external rom...bummer.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little laptop!

Pros: Awesome computer - light as anything, nice-looking (despite the mac-book-wannabe vibe), and the battery life is INCREDIBLE - I charge it at night, and then use it all day, no sweat. All the hardware is totally compatible with Ubuntu 10.04, including the CPU Frequency scaling and all the cool touchpad gestures. The complaints around here about the wireless card are totally unwarranted - I get 6 MB/s over the wireless, which is about as good as it's ever going to get anywhere. I can play 720p videos over HDMI on my 1080p HDTV at full resolution streaming over the wireless without any problem at all. The laptop screen is very nice-looking, and unbelievably thin - it's barely 1/4" thick. I absolutely love the touchpad - the mouse buttons are annoying, but with the multi-finger gestures I never even use them. The hard drive is not nearly as bad as some here say - HDPARM gets read speeds of 65 MB/s, which is barely worse than most desktop drives. It comes with system CD's as well.

Cons: The webcam is mounted upside-down. Asus knew about this issue, and just had the Windows 7 drivers re-written to invert the image at the device level. Unfortunately, if you're running a Linux distro, the only way to invert the image (with the uvcvideo driver this camera must use) is to download some patches and recompile the driver. This isn't too difficult however - Google it up and you'll find some good how-to's. I've read on the forums that the image is also inverted in XP.

You have to hit F2 to get into BIOS during startup - it doesn't tell you this, and it took me about 10 minutes to figure it out...

Other Thoughts: Nuke the abomination that is Windows and install Ubuntu - you'll be glad you did.

4 out of 5 eggsIncredibly battery life

Pros: Battery life is outstanding. I'm actually getting near 10 hours with the brightness turned down a bit, Wi-fi on, and surfing. Keyboard is good for a laptop of this price range, but doesn't match a nice ThinkPad keyboard. Touchpad has good gesture support for scrolling, middle mouse button, etc. Ubuntu 10.04 installs fine with everything working out of the box (sound, Wi-FI, special keys). Quite light in weight, modern looking. Processor speed is fine for typical office tasks, watching video, etc. I can't tell that the processor is only 1.3 GHz.

Cons: This is my first glossy screened laptop, and it does produce a copious amount of glare. The touchpad is a bit frustrating, but perhaps I'll get used to it. Despite the little bumps (which I can barely feel), there is no tactile feedback so sometimes your finger is off of the touchpad and you're left wondering why the pointer isn't moving. There is a single button for left and right mouse button functionality, clicking on either side gives you the left or right. It requires a lot of force to click the button, but you can tap the touchpad for a left mouse button press, or tap two fingers for a middle button.

Other Thoughts: 320 GB drive is partitioned into two drives, one about 60% of the space, one about 40% of the space. That's nice, it makes installing a second OS easy.

Includes a Windows 7 Recovery DVD, but still gives the option of burning another one.

The amount of crapware installed seems pretty low compared to other systems I've used. Most of it was Asus "functionality" which was pretty useless. The only big mistake Asus made was putting a trial version of Trend Micro's anti-virus stuff; I removed that and put on Microsoft Security Essentials.

Powertop on Linux shows it drawing 7W right now, which is pretty incredible.

5 out of 5 eggsThis is an ecellent machine

Pros: -LOOOOONNNNGG battery life (consistently 9-11 hours wifi web browsing, up to 5-6 hours of playing HD resolution videos)
-nice 'feel'
-really clear and crisp screen
-barely gets warms, even under heavy usage
-very quiet

Cons: -the touchpad is too easy too trigger. hovering my finger over the pad will frequently register accidental clicks.
-the touchpad surface is mildly irritating to my fingertip after several hours of use.
-too many different types of materials (aluminum, shiny black plastic, shiny white plastic, dull black plastic) undermines an otherwise elegant design.
-The shiny black plastic bezel around the screen shows every little fingerprint and speck of dust and is far too easy to scratch (I noticed dozens after just a few weeks.)
-The audio output seems to have some weird equalization that over emphasizes some of the bass and low mid frequencies.
-the hard drive is partitioned oddly. It's 320 GB about 150 GB each for OS and DATA partitions. It would make much more sense to have 50-60 GB for the OS partition, with the rest allocated for storage.
-Newegg is the only place I know with a 320 GB drive in the UL30. Everyone else seems to have 500 GB. Still enough for my needs though.

Other Thoughts: I really like this computer. It totally lives up to the hype. I charge it at night, run it on battery all day. It just goes forever. It's an ideal computer for a travelers, excellent for everyday web-browsing and productivity, and would make a great HTPC. It uses even less power than atom-based computers while delivering higher performance. This is one of the most satisfying computer purchases I've ever made.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Purchase

Pros: This is a Fantastic laptop out of the box, Plays online video such as youtube, etc with no skipping or lag, plays 720p mp4 files with ease. I basically have this setup with an external 19in lcd set at 1400x900, and can play video files in full screen mode while using the laptop screen to work on, no problems. I also have a 7port powered usb hub with the following connections, external dvddl-rw, external 320gb backup drive, wireless keyboard/mouse, creative 5.1 usb x-fi.

Cons: There is only one "real" con i have found, the built in wireless n is single band, so your suck at 150mbps. Now i personally have 2 other laptops with good dualband miniPCIE nics and decided to void my warrany, open the laptop and replace. and much to my surprise, the wiressless card is some sort of "half height" card, similar concept to when you use half height cards in servers or slim towers. Which sucks for now, because i cant find a dualband half height mpcie card to put in here. but the wireless card it comes with is technically N, and does work well...im just annoyed because i was willing to forgo gigabit, if i'd still have my 300mbps wireless connection

Other Thoughts: Ok, next on the list, the hard drive in this is exceptionally slow even for a 5400rpm drive, with my purchase i bought a Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM drive to replace from the start because i only use 7200rpm drives. I purchased this particular 320gb over the new 500gb drives for 3 main reasons, the WD runs much quieter, less heat, and lower power consumption. These 3 factors are vital for a small laptop such as this. Anyways, so i put the original drive in an external enclosure to use for backups...and its slow as can be, sustained real world write speeds of about 17mb/s on average.

All in all, buy this laptop, spend another 70 on a 7200rpm drive, and enjoy a system that can't be matched in size and speed for the combined total.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Notebook

Pros: Great feeling keyboard (good response and comfort); very nice design; light; battery life!! (i'd say about 9.5 - 10 hours of reasonable use; great features (smart login, convenient hot keys, multi-gesture track pad...etc); win 7 64bit; perfect screen size; fairly quite processor/hard drive; always cool.

Cons: The only reason I give it 4 eggs is because the power just isn't really there. Webcam is pretty bad... probably worse than the one on my 3 year old notebook this replaced. battery life is great, but there's no way you're getting the 12 hours it advertises (its more like 11 on the most efficient settings).

Other Thoughts: A lot of reviews talk about a creek in the palm rests... my notebook did not have any such issue. people seem to find the smallest things to complain about.
