5 out of 5 eggsWhat a beast, even after all these years

Pros: Workhorse processor: The P8700 is one of Intel's Core 2 Duo immortals. It can't keep up with the current generation of multi-threaded multi-core monsters, but for anyone with moderate gaming and media editing needs, it will work its tail off and not complain. It definitely beats most dual-core processors that you would buy in brand new budget and medium range laptops today.

Solid dedicated graphics: If you're just going to use the 17.3" screen, the GTX 260M should give you the capacity needed to run most games on High settings. With some tweaking and processor overclocking, you can probably hit Ultra on some of the more popular titles from the past few years like Skyrim and Starcraft 2.

Amazing keyboard: It's sleek, tactile, and non-stick. Typing is a dream on this machine.

Sound: So many laptops have complete junk sound. This one delivers crisp quality (not a lot of bass, of course) both on the unit and through the HDMI into a TV as well. I've tested both and I'm very pleased.

Cons: 6GB DDR2 RAM: 6GB is an ok amount of RAM for a multitasker. But this is DDR2, so it's a slight step back. But given this is a classic gaming machine in its own right (dual-core processor, 200 series nVidia graphics), there's not a lot to complain about if you know what you're getting into.

Battery life: Gaming laptops don't sport a lot of battery life in general, but this one will only get you about an hour of true power. Seriously though, if you're a gamer using a laptop, you should always have the AC adapter handy.

Fan sound: The fan in this sucker starts quiet and then, depending on how hard you're pushing the resources, will spool up to sound like a model jet taking off. It can slightly overpower the onboard sound. Otherwise, it's normally fine.

Other Thoughts: First, I purchased this used several weeks ago. I just wanted a moderate-level gaming machine that would last about 2 years or so. The Core 2 Duo E8700 has fantastic reviews, and the GTX 260M will be nVidia supported until April 2016. So this fit perfectly.

I've played dozens of games on this unit since acquiring it. I've had no problems that couldn't be solved with a driver update. Once I did close the laptop in the middle of a Skyrim session, corrupting a lot of the data and causing a blue screen of death which had to be fixed through running chkdsk and Windows Startup Repair. That was my fault though, and everything works fine after fixing it.

If you can find this unit for a good price and you don't demand utter graphical perfection in every game, get this unit.

4 out of 5 eggsA Beast

Pros: Mine is still rocking and running strong. Can play a lot of my games...even the heavier graphics games....just on lower settings.

Cons: Heavy heavy heavy....I thought I would gain portability with buying a laptop though I should have really considered the dimensions. This is not a laptop you will be able to pull out and watch a movie while on a plane.

If left idle for too long, screen will black out and I can only get it back by resetting.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Nice screen, good configuration for the price.

Cons: HD dead with zero warning after 4 months light use, right after a lot of data input by user it was purchased for who wasn't big on backups. Now having to deal with service/repair hassle and data recovery hassle and expense. PITA. Also has a weak networking card, could barely stream any video and was about to pay to upgrade it, now forget it, the unit isn't worth it. Wouldn't buy another Asus.

1 out of 5 eggsProblematic

Pros: Great Specs for the price

toslink out of jack1 works great

e-sata works great

Cons: Wifi on/off switch only works in certain combinations
(a driver issue) no driver software update available
(temp fix, click on-screen logo when flipping switch on)

usb door torn off and missing

runs hot by design

seems to hangup once in a while on games

cpu is the slow link in the chain

Was not refurbished properly:

Screen blinks off constantly after 60 days.
not covered by Newegg anymore.

ASUS does not have another one, so I can send it off to them and be out of a computer for a month and probably have the same problem again in 60 days because they obviously did not fix it right, or I can fix it myself.

Other Thoughts: I can live with everything but the screen not working.

I would have given it 4 stars if I did not have to refurbish it myself to fix the screen.

Check youtube for the fix.

You can press on the plastic right of the asus logo to get it to work once in a while.

The biggest problem is that it's not even 2 months old and I have no reasonable solution for making it work right except to fix it myself. Newegg was done with it after 30 days. ASUS will do whatever they did before again and send it back to me the same as it was when I got it. That will take a month or 2 and It will probably happen again since whatever they do to refurbish them only works for a few months.

So, I have to refurbish it myself.

I should get a 100 bucks off for having to take a screwdriver to this thing.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I originally got this as a mild gaming/work laptop. It's pretty large for a laptop but I wasn't planning on moving it around regularly. I was pretty pleased with it for the first few of months. I was skeptical to get a refurbished laptop but it seemed like it got good reviews and a quick search online showed the same. Perhaps I should have searched more thoroughly... see Cons.

Aside from that it runs well. No random shut downs or overheating. Fairly quiet compared to my old laptop, but that isn't saying much. Not good for intense gaming. Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale/Planescape torment made the system work a bit. It ran smoothly but loudly.

Cons: About two months into my ownership I found that my screen was flickering a bit. I didn't give it much thought at the time until it got drastically worse. With a more specific issue to search for on this model I later came to find that it's actually a really common problem on this laptop. Apparently the plugs that connect the LED Backlight to the mother board are located at the hinges and become loose over time (I'm guessing from opening and closing).

I've also had problems with it freezing up occasionally. When I put it into sleep mode (by closing it) it sometimes will not come out and I'll have to hard restart it. However I haven't been able to locate the source of this issue so I can't really say if it's a problem with the model or just with my own purchase.

My wireless sometimes doesn't function from the Fn buttons. It's an issue related to Wireless Console 3 software.

Other Thoughts: Aside from the problems stated in the Cons the laptop runs very well. It's a shame that the flickering was as bad as it was (definitely avoid this laptop if you suffer from epilepsy).

I wouldn't recommend this laptop for the flickering alone. The other issues are minor and I'd have given this laptop 4 Eggs if those were the only problems with it, but the flickering is just bad to the point that it's frustrating to work on.

If you do decide to buy this item, fixes to the flickering issue can be found on youtube by typing "Asus G71 Flicker" (the G71 is a similar model that suffers from the same issue).

I hope this information helps perspective buyers.

5 out of 5 eggsyea , but can it play crysis

Pros: it can play crysis

Cons: asus over clocking utilty wont save upon shut down
screen flickering to total black out

but found the solution over at the ROG fourms , just needed to bump the windows energy savings plan to full high performance

havint had a screen flicker since

Other Thoughts: bumped the gtx 260 to 555MHz / 1404MHz / 800MHZ

might get some faster ram and plug in a ssd , 5400 spin drive is ok , but doesnt do this lap top justice

think she will get me to 2013 or when the gtx 580m class laptops get below to $1500 mark

3 out of 5 eggsbuy the extended warranty!!!

Pros: size, keyboard backlights, speed..

Cons: heavy, speaker cover hard to clean, blue screened twice.. I have had to wipe and reinstall 2 times in 5 months. The screen flickers while sitting dormant or unless the brightness setting is on the highest setting then it will not flash out. I used to love Asus but now that they dont stand behind their products, I will not buy again.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great computer for the price, if yours works...

Cons: Showed up scratched and would not turn on.

Other Thoughts: Wish the computer had worked because the specs are great and just what I need/want, but you get what you pay for I suppose. Also, when I send it back, I'm stuck in a replacement only return policy (no refund)...
