5 out of 5 eggsImpressive Quality

Pros: Killer graphics in a small formfactor. Appealing Asthetics. Solid Construction.

Cons: Very power hungry, requires decent ventilation.

Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop as a replacement for an ailing HP dv6000 series entertainment laptop. The difference in quality between these two models is outstanding.
The two main point considered were the 14" form factor and decent discrete graphics capabilities. Comparatively, most ASUS laptops with a respectable graphics adapter generally come in the 17" flavor. Not looking for a desktop replacement, this computer seemed to fit the bill. After using for about a month, would wholeheartedly say it does.

If you want a small computer with the ability to run games a decent quality. This is a top contender.

Only con is battery life, just under 2 hours. Given the power under the hood in this, I am not surprised.

4 out of 5 eggsOk now it works

Pros: My second one runs smoothly, has no problems, can play anything (not on max, certainly, but plays smoothly).

Cons: The first thing the first one I recieved did was BSOD... After that wonderful premonition, it worked somewhat, but in the end it must have had a faulty Nvidia card (GTX 335M). The laptop has two graphics cards, and while the low power one seemed to be working, but telling it to do anything from playing a graphics intense game to simply accessing Nvidia's control panel caused fatal errors. Yes, I tried updating drivers, again and again, used old stable ones, same thing, even upgraded to 7ultimate and tried like 10 drivers again, and that time it would freeze even on the desktop..

Needless to say, I returned it, and the new one works fine. I trust Asus, they have always served me well in the past, and I would not expect this to be a common problem, thus 4 eggs.

Other Thoughts: I have had this issue with the wireless internet fading out from time to time, but I'm PRETTY sure it's my router's fault

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent value, great for school + gaming

Pros: 335M can run anything you throw at it (more or less).
Placement of the vent on the side is convenient for on-lap use, never gets too hot.
Touch pad is quick and responsive, although multi-touch scrolling functions can be a tad bit sensitive.
Keyboard has everything you need, nothing you don't.
Runs any source game on max settings, played through HL2 Ep.2 on full with AA turned all the way up and reflections on full. Also plays WoW on max settings while keeping a constant 30+ fps. Civilization 5 runs smoothly on med/low depending on the size of the maps you're playing on.
Screen is bright, with several different settings that allow for fine tuning for whatever you're doing. (Vivid mode, theatre mode, gamma correction etc.) a nice touch.
The thing is extremely light for the power it packs. It fits perfectly in my backpack for daily use on campus and I can hardly tell it's in there half of the time. (Power brick is also not too much of an issue as it is relatively small as well.)

Cons: The thing's a dust/fingerprint magnet, as are most glossy-style notebooks, but the dark brown color really makes them visible in the light. Not really detracting from its performance however, just a minor gripe.
Also a minor gripe is the partitioning of the harddrive on first use. Doesn't really affect the performance at all but I did find it annoying having to change all my install and download directories to the Data drive so I wouldn't fill up my C drive too quickly and eventually slow down the OS.
As the other reviewers mentioned, the speakers are pretty terrible, but I can't say I expected more from a small, light notebook. It's not much of a problem for me because when i'm at home, I just plug it into some speakers, and when i'm at school I just use earbuds, so I find myself rarely using the speakers.
Another disappointment was the mic, I often get complaints while on skype and I have to plug in my USB desktop mic to get decent quality. Not a huge deal, but sometimes annoying

Other Thoughts: Bought this specifically for school about 2 months ago and I easily have the best laptop out of my group of friends. One friend has an HP pavilion, an older model, and one has a gateway FX series gaming laptop, also an older model; but this Asus definitely runs games better than theirs do. Both of their laptops costed about $1100, but this is a steal at only $919. The 14" screen helps the 335M cope with games, running them at a lower resolution. The color is still quite good and I even experience more consistent framerates than my desktop gaming pc running at 1920x1080 native res.
Another small thing was that about a week after purchasing, I somehow managed to put two small scratches just below the Asus logo on the front of the notebook. I can't for the life of me figure out what happened as I was very careful, but oh well, future owners just beware :)
Overall, an excellent laptop and I'd recommend it to any student who is also an avid gamer, this thing is simply excellent.

4 out of 5 eggsGood laptop

Pros: + Simple, clean layout of interior.
+ 335m GPU will play any game out there.
+ i5 450m CPU handles all multitasking with ease.
+ Quick boot times w/clean install of Windows 7.
+ Optimus system graphics switching (yes, this IS Optimus auto switching, just not advertised as such)
+ Texture on the inside for palm rests unique
+ ELAN touchpad supports multi-touch gestures (2 finger scrolling, 3 finger tap right-click)
+ True Global Warranty with 1 year accidental insurance

Cons: - Speakers just acceptable.
- Battery life not up to today's standards (This is because of the 4400 mah battery. Not because of the system itself) main gaming competitors with graphics switching in 14-in get 4-5+ (Acer 4820TG and Lenovo y460). K42JV Lucky to get 3 hours at 50% brightness surfing the web. But again, this is due to the weak battery they include)
- The color (IMO)
- Touchpad same texture as the palm rests
- Microphone a bit weak

Other Thoughts: Wish they had chosen a slightly slicker design for this notebook. It's quite drab and the dark brown color isn't for everyone. Though if you're not a fan of glossy insides and like a clean, simple design this could be for you.

I never use the touchpad buttons, instead relying on the single finger tap for left click, 2 finger scrolling, and 3 finger tap for right-click.

Would be nice if they had used a different texture for the touchpad than what was used for the palm rests.

This laptop plays any game currently out. Batman Asylum at highest settings maintains 30fps+ (AA 8x and PhysX off). Mass Effect 2 maintains 30fps+ at highest settings (AA off). Colin McRae Dirt 2 maintains 30fps on medium (AA off). BFBC2 30fps+ on medium (AA off). Call of Juarez Bound in Blood 30fps+ on high settings (AA off). Most of the games listed average in the 40+ range or better.

Only real negatives are the 4400 mah battery and sub par speakers. Would maybe buy Lenovo y460 if had it to

3 out of 5 eggsGood Product, Poor Service

Pros: I think the laptop is great. I use it primarily for movies, music, and everquest II. I really like the SD card reader right in the front.

Cons: The service is just plain amatuer. My screen cracked (my fault I guess) and it has taken me all morning to get an RMA number. Expect a half hour or more of wait time and then another half hour with a slow service rep. I deal with service people quite a bit and the substandard service surprised me.

Other Thoughts: If the repair is done quickly and and they honor the warranty, I'll add another star.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good laptop for the price

Pros: - Very bright screen

- Althought it says to make recovery DVDs out of the box, this is not required. It comes with a drivers DVD so you can clean-install Win7 (highly recommended to remove bloatware) without having to hunt the internet for device drivers. It also has a hidden factory restore partition.

- HDD is partitioned as OS 116GB and DATA 332GB out of the box.
- Battery charges fully in 2 hours
- Lightweight

- You can switch between the GT 335M GPU to the Intel integrated one via the nVidia control panel. It is instant and has no screen flicker. It's as close to optimus technology as it gets without actually being optimus.

- The screen is very sturdy. If you lift the screen with one hand, the laptop body won't rise with the screen (unlike cheaply constructed laptops) unless it was less than 15 degrees from the horizontal. The plastic construction is better than other plastic laptops.

Cons: - The keyboard is bendy in the middle, but only if you press on it very very hard. However, you won't notice a thing while typing, and tactile feedback is good/above average. It can survive ~800 keypresses per minute in the middle, and upwards of 1600 kpm everywhere else. (Minor issue)

- Screen has a narrow field of view. Yes I know most laptops have sub-par screens too, but this seems to be bad even compared to those. Viewed from the center, the screen is perfect. (Minor issue)

- Also, the laptop screen only tilts back about 45 degrees from the vertical (minor issue)

- All plastic construction. See note on construction in the Pros section, this is not exactly a really bad thing. (Major issue)

Other Thoughts: - The battery life is about 3 hours and 30 minutes watching youtube videos, which is average for an i5 6-cell. It is more than enough battery life to take it into university classes, assuming you won't be playing WoW or something. 100% CPU drains the battery in two hours flat, no surprise there.

- The bloatware. Bejeesus the bloatware. The laptop used 1.6GB of RAM out of the box, and after a clean Win7 reinstall it took up only 1GB. This describes every laptop manufacturer though.

- The power cable is on the right side of the laptop. Who decided that?

4 out of 5 eggsA Great Laptop

Pros: Fast, beautiful (but not dazzling) display, very little bloatware, no single use buttons (such as wireless status etc.) to clog the keyboard, sturdy keyboard. I use my laptop to produce complex documents, a little photoshop and some video streaming to relax. I do not play games, so I cannot speak to its game-playing prowess, but so far no complaints, it does everything I need flawlessly.

Cons: Speaking as a woman, the design cannot win any beauty contests. The all black case and monotone keyboard is a little hard getting used to after using two-tone keyboards. It's not a big deal and I am sure I will get used to it. However, any business person would be happy with the construction and its looks, it is definitely not flashy or attention-getting.

Other Thoughts: This is my first Asus ever, so I have little to personally compare it with. Over the years I have owned Macs, Dells, many HPs, Lenovos but no Asus. I finally got tired of HP quality control and gave up on HP after returning 2 of them with bad pixels, dislodged mousepads, etc. I will definitely post more after I have owned my Asus for a month or so.

And lastly, Newegg service and delivery are extraordinary: ordered on Sunday, got my laptop Tuesday afternoon.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very Fast computer

Cons: This is the second notebook I have received with the same issue bad drivers installed for the video card.

Other Thoughts: If a customer requests a replacement for a product shouldn't a functional check be performed prior to sending out the replacement to avoid sending out a product with the same defective issues

4 out of 5 eggsGreat but a few downsides

Pros: This is really a great laptop overall. ASUS doesn't fail to give you a great value for what you pay. The laptop is powerful, fast, good for gaming, and very portable. So far, I've played Team Fortress 2 and it easily runs at full settings.

Cons: Anything related to do with sound about this laptop is terrible. First off, the default speakers built into the laptop are terrible. I really don't think they could be any worse. The same can be said for the mic. When I talk to people on Skype they say that the sound quality is bad, and I have to speak very loudly or very close to the actual laptop for them to hear me decently.

So bad speakers huh? That's okay, let me just make use of the ONE headphone/microphone jack that comes with the laptop. Don't bother. I bought a 90 dollar BOSE dual speaker system to put down on my desk when I'm using my laptop for music. Using the analog headphone connection (the 3.5mm jack), the speakers pick up all the sound of my typing and amplify it for me to hear, and there is also a constant high pitch humming sound coming out of them, my guess from the static noise that the internal components make.

I compared the speakers with another laptop, and there was no static or anything.

Other Thoughts: The ASUS K42 line is advertised to have Nvidia's Optimus technology, to switch between integrated and discrete graphics automatically. This laptop doesn't appear to have it built in, although it also doesn't appear on the ASUS website under the K42 series, unlike the JC and Jr that do. However, I'd rather have the significantly more powerful 335M than the 310M and Optimus. Graphics here can be easily switched in the Nvidia control panel.
