1 out of 5 eggsBIG ASUS LETDOWN

Pros: Good speed, impressive performance, beautiful display.

Cons: Poor reliability, horrible repair service from ASUS.

Other Thoughts: Loved the laptop at first, so much so I bought one for my wife. Unfortunately, the laptop only made it two years before I had a power jack issue, which caused many start-up issues until it wouldn't power the laptop. I turn it into ASUS for warranty repair and get the laptop back with issues. First a "S.M.A.R.T." error upon boot, then the system refusing to boot at all. I buy system repair disks from ASUS and get the laptop booting....until I realize I have to keep doing this every 1-3 weeks. I finally send it back to ASUS, but now the warranty has expired. They say its a bad motherboard, HDD, and audio card....all gone bad in a matter of getting the laptop back from ASUS repair. Weird...sounds like something a power problem (power jack maybe?) would have caused. I pay for the repairs out of pocket...I get back a laptop that won't boot up and shows a white screen. Upon closer inspection, I notice two internal scratches at the lower, middle portion of the display. As I wipe the screen to make sure they are not external, the screen goes nuts. I call ASUS...disgusted...and their answer is send it back. No thanks, I will send it back alright, they can keep it and give me my repair money back. I will never touch another ASUS product again. And to think I was getting ready to buy my Son one until this whole debacle occurred.

5 out of 5 eggsAll around Awesome Laptop

Pros: For gaming, the only thing that really matters is how much raw power you can pack into your system. For a laptop, this thing does just that. So far, this laptop has been able to handle anything I can throw at it, and still has power to spare. The design looks fantastic, especially the matte finish. The cooling is also fantastic. I can't stress that enough, I was able to OC the graphics card to 750Mhz without the temps going over 67 degrees C. All in all, this thing is fantastic.

Cons: The only bad thing I can say about this thing is that; A) its not free, B) the thing is really heavy, but what do you expect from a desktop replacement class laptop. And C) the battery life is terrible, but again your paying for performance with portability

Other Thoughts: none

5 out of 5 eggsOverall grade: A- (where a C is actually the average)

Pros: Computer has been working flawlessly since firing it up about three months ago. Hasn't crashed once and was very easy to set up a linux/windows dual boot. It's incredibly fast and reliable and the screen is gorgeous. Also, the additional products included with the computer have actually been quite useful. The backpack is great, I used it everyday this summer walking to work, although it is quite small, which wasn't a problem for me but might be a consideration for some. It will fit the computer, charger, mouse, plus maybe one notebook and one textbook if you really cram it in there. The convenience of having a mouse included with the computer was an added bonus, not to mention it's a fantastic little mouse.

Cons: The touchpad is a little glitchy in Windows and Linux. Although I hear there are some relatively easy DIY fixes to this problem, I haven't looked into them considering the problem isn't bad enough to warrant um, fixing. Also the USB ports are quite snug and somewhat less than one hundred percent reliable--they can be finicky at times. The mouse is a little buggy when using Linux (Ubuntu) but seems to work fine in Windows. Overall however, an incredibly above average computer.

Other Thoughts: Although the computer is intended for gaming, I have never used it in that capacity. So if you're looking to buy a gaming computer and want to know how it fulfills that role, you may want to disregard this review (the glitchy touchpad/mouse may be a real issue for someone who games). As someone who simply wants a very powerful computer that's reliable and swanky, I highly recommend this computer.

4 out of 5 eggsLimited BIOS switches

Pros: Has USB3 - too bad my external usb3 disk drive doesnt seem to go too much faster. Nice screen, but color appears to be a bit blue ( u wont notice till u do a color calibration )

Cons: there is no way to disable hyperthreads, speedstep, or turbo-boost. if you run low ( 800Mhz) or High ( 2.8Ghz ) you seem to be fine. But in the middle, you get very poor results. a video DVD editor used one cpu, and then only 25% of the time. I suspect a poor interaction, but since I dont have any BIOS ( or win 7) switches i cant test my theory.

touchpad is not working well. Under linux its awfull! Had to use an external mouse. Asus will let u turn off the touchpad with a BIOS switch, so it not like they dont know about this issue.

Other Thoughts: No word from ASUS, other than I cant turn off hyperthreads .

I give it a 4 star because the BIOS can be fixed. If ASUS cannot fix ( or wont fix ) the bios, then I'd give it a 1 star because of the speedstep / turboboost / hyperthreads interaction

5 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 + OSX Lion Photoshop Gaming machine extreme!

Pros: CPU Performance
Memory Capacity
Video Game FPS !!! Great Video Card

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The laptop comes pre-installed with Windows 7. I moved the Primary drive to secondary slot, and installed OSX Lion using tutorial found via Google. There was a forum section specifically for the G73SW. Following the step by step instructions I bought an official version of OSX Lion on my Macbook Air and made the USB Install drive. I now have OSX Lion setup on a 128GB SSD drive in the primary slot, and the boot loader found my Widows 7 installation on the secondary drive slot. No modification of the Windows 7 was necessary. Everything works in OSX Lion minus the SD Card reader. I have sleep, backlit keyboard, video card works great, multitouch (lite / 2 fingers) camera, wifi, ethernet, all of this from just google searchig OSX Lion G73SW Tutorial. LOVE LOVE LOVE this laptop, and runs Photoshop CS5 (and the rest of the CS5 Suite) extremely fast. Alot faster than my friends brand new 2011 Macbook Pro 2.3Ghz top end model. My G73SW smokes the competition!

3 out of 5 eggsSuper laptop, fatal flaw

Pros: Just about everything. I bought the G74SX because I saw that asus had 'fixed' the monobar button on the touchpad and liked the better video card(3gig 560 gtx). I like to use the comp for business uses (programming, graphics) in addition to games. I like that it is a gaming laptop that does not look like a neon circus.

True desktop replacement. Screen is gorgeous, performance is amazing- especially when anything with equivalent specs is going for several hundred to a thousand more.

Cons: Uuuugghh. Keyboard. I almost bought the G73 a while back but was leery of the GSOD reports and all the bad keyboard comments. I figured they fixed that in addition to the split mouse buttons.

Wrong. The keyboard is dismal. If you normally are a fast typer, stay away from this computer. I can't write a full paragraph without it missing several keystrokes. It is baffling how Asus hasn't responded to this. Forget programming or doing any important work with this computer it is an excercise in frustration.

Even gaming it is almost insult to injury to have a computer that is so obviously capable and responsive fail because it doesn't register a critical keystroke at the right time.

I bought another keyboard and use that instead of the one on the laptop but it is an awkward setup and annoying that I have to do that.

Absolutely would be a 5 egg computer otherwise, with the keyboard it is 3 eggs and I don't recommend buying this laptop :(

Other Thoughts: Newegg itself is awesome. Almost bought from another site that allowed customizing, but saw they shipped 'up to two weeks after the order' based on the fact that they allowed customization. Yuck. Oredered newegg 3 day ground (free shipping) and it arrived the next day. Similar outstanding delivery on an Eeepad I ordered as well.

5 out of 5 eggsPossibly the Best for the Buck

Pros: You get a Sandy Bridge CPU, 8gb of Ram, and RAID zero with 1TB of memory.. PLUS a true 1080p resolution for under 2grand.. yeah, that's hard to beat. Not to mention the 460m GPU is outstanding. But better yet, this thing NEVER gets hot. I swear I could use it outside on a summar day under a blanket and it would never get hot. Not to mention, unlike many of it's competitors making gaming laptops without a backlit keyboard (for who-knows why!), this machine actually gives you that basic feature, and I love it - even comes with different light intensities!! Speaker aren't too bad either. So far I have had no issues with missed key strokes, which is nice... and I love the size and sensitivity of the touch pad.

Cons: - Pretty heavy
- The keyboard takes getting used to - but I like it now
- You have to update quite a bit of software and drivers to make the features work. I had to call ASUS to figure out what drivers I would need to make the keyboard backlight function correctly.. which really wasn't a huge deal, but it took some time.
- Battery life isn't BAD, but not great in real usage.

Other Thoughts: Honestly, I tried 2 other laptops (returned them all) before going with this one:
- HP dv7tqe
- MSI 660R

The HP just wasn't fast enough with the price.. the MSI was nice, but the speakers rattled the hell out of the keyboard and made insane noise. This ASUS is tight as a drum!

2 out of 5 eggsFilled with bloatware

Pros: it is very easy to reset back to factory setting, which is good since I have had to do it so many times.

Cons: Filled with demo versions of software, and bloatware that no sane user would ever desire. The things that come pre-installed on this machine I normally have to spend hours getting uninstalled from my mothers computer when she complains about it being "slow"

Other Thoughts: Since purchasing this machine, I have reinstalled windows 4 times back to factory settings. If you value your sanity do not uninstall the bing toolbar. Doing that breaks windows explorer, not internet explorer, Windows Explorer. The only way to repair is to reinstall windows.

The Roxio player for the blu ray disk? Do NOT run the mandatory update, that removes the player from your computer, and the only way to get it back is to reinstall windows.

This machine does not come with a windows disk, but rather a hidden drive that when accessed, formats the machine and reinstalls windows back to factory settings.

5 out of 5 eggsWOOT!

Pros: This thing is HUGE! don't get me wrong. I love it. the display is very nice and crisp. And it's also very very quiet. More than I expected.
I got this from a local shop for $700 less without the backpack and mouse but same exact specs.

I moved the hard drive to the second bay and installed an SSD in the primary bay. 7.8 windows score on the SSD drive.

Cons: It's extremely heavy. But I knew that when I bought it.
The keyboard is not so bad if you disable the touchpad. I got used to it.

Other Thoughts: awesome laptop. this thing is built solid. a true desktop replacement.

5 out of 5 eggsBigger is Better?

Pros: I just received this behemoth of a laptop about 16 hours ago. This thing is BIG by my standards. I just upgraded from a 15" ASUS laptop which I used to think was large.

The screen is absolutely gorgeous, the computer is fast, and there is plenty of storage on the system for me. It also has a Blu Ray drive, but I don't have any Blu Ray discs with me here in Iraq to watch, so...

Can't wait to get some new games for this thing. Battlefield 3 looks like it might push the limits.

The backpack and mouse are pretty nice. Not many pockets on the backpack, but the laptop fits perfectly in it, and the mouse is decent.

Cons: Heavy? But I knew that when I bought it.

Haven't tested the battery yet, but I am sure it won't last all that long. My last two gaming laptops lasted about an hour on battery at the most.

The power supply is pretty big as well.

Other than that... Hopefully no cons in the future!

Other Thoughts: Dangit. After I buy this system for 1,800, Newegg lists this same computer minus the Blu Ray, backpack, mouse, and 500 gb hard drive for $700 less! Everything else is the exact same! BLAH! I knew I should have waited. Ah well.
