3 out of 5 eggsOnly one qualm

Pros: Does everything I need it to. Great for the price.

Cons: The speakers are very soft, to the point where it's sometimes hard to watch movies, even with the volume maxed out. Fine with headphones, but kind of annoying.

4 out of 5 eggsHDMI details

Pros: I realize this laptop is old, out of stock and probably won't ever be stocked again, but I wanted to share a couple technical details that I've discovered that aren't in the manual:

1) HDMI can handle at least 1920x1200 resolution (so you can hook up a 16:10 monitor to it without worries). I do not know if it can handle higher, I did not want to risk buying a higher resolution monitor and having to return it.

2) HDMI audio works fine. I've only tried stereo so far.

Cons: Obsolete :)

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Did everything school related flawlessly, as intended. Great utility for its price.

Cons: If you've read the spec, you'd know it's not a gaming computer. Not worth taking an egg off, but still a bummer.

The mouse pad is placed in the area where I rest my left hand, so sometimes I click or highlight things by an accident. Only time when it's an inconvenience is when writing long documents. - 1 egg

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

Pros: i5, 640GB hdd, rubberized, cheap! only cost $439.00

Cons: none so far. you can tell it's a refurb, but for the price, I can overlook a few cosmetics.

Other Thoughts: Newegg description says it can only go up to 4gig of RAM. I have upgraded to 8 gig using http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231294 just fine.

everything goes much more smoothly with the new RAM.

3 out of 5 eggsOK for the price

Pros: 3.5/5 eggs.

Cosmetics: Laptop is visually appealing. Looks very sleek. Took it out of the case, used a bumper sticker remover to take the i5 and junky stickers off, and physically inspected laptop. Looked brand new!

Technology: Laptop is very fast for multitasking and running dual monitors. However, integrated VGA does not allow for gaming. Due note that I doubled the system RAM and installed an SSD and a custom wireless card (Rokland n3 w/ OD 5dBi antenna)

Operating System Integration: Took way too much custom configuration to make this laptop function properly on Windows 7 Ultimate. Fedora 16 worked with minimum customization. Backtrack 5 runs smoothly off of a flash drive.

Cons: * Webcam is upsidedown by default, and took quite some time to find a fix for this. Ended up installing ExpressGate just to tweak the webcam settings. ASUS drivers are not clear on their website, and it is tough to find the proper driver for the webcam.
* Drivers are a monster in general if you plan on installing Windows 7. Once you jump through the hoops, everything works just fine and dandy.
* Speaker cuts in and out on the left side and sounds horrific and has a lot of static. I am planning on replacing the internal speakers. For now I use headphones.
* This thing gets very hot. Do not buy this if you are not intending on using a cooling pad.
* Integrated NIC does not support monitor mode (does not apply to 99% of computer users)
* Warranty is garbage, and ASUS does not offer great support regarding the speaker issue
* Only 3 USB ports

Other Thoughts: * I am Network+/A+ certified and full-time student
* Replaced HDD with a 128GB Samsung 470 SSD
* Upgraded to 8GB DDR3-1333 RAM
* Custom USB NIC (Rokland n3) with specialized 5dBi OD Antenna
* Dual boot with Windows 7 x64 Ultimate and Fedora 16 x64 w/ Gnome 3.0 GUI

4 out of 5 eggsDecent computer

Pros: Webcam, hdmi, was cheap when i bought it.

Cons: Not a long battery life you have to charge the battery like every 2 hours. When typing, your hands rest right over the mouse pad and it sometimes highlights things and deletes them as you keep typing.

Other Thoughts: When I bought mine it was on a good deal, for like 500 after shipping. It was a good deal they had over the summer but for the 700 they have it at I would have never buy it.

2 out of 5 eggsAwesome work PC. Not for Gamers

Pros: This thing is a great, no... phenomenal, work pc. I have no problems with this machine when it comes to processing power.

Cons: However... it tends to overheat.. bad. This thing is not for gaming. Just out of curiosity, I attempted to play Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on this bad boy. It played it, and it looked surprisingly good. However, it overheated and shut off 5 minutes in. At other times, it gets very hot and the heat is almost unbearable. I would suggest a cooling pad of some sort. That is why I knocked off 3 eggs. Overheating is bad, and anyone with a brain and two cents knows that heat is a computer's worst enemy.

Other Thoughts: If I had it to do over again, I would have chosen another laptop, preferably one that doesn't overheat as badly.

P.S. I realize it is not a gaming laptop, but it should not overheat when I am programming or have several browser windows open. That is unacceptable.

1 out of 5 eggsLaptop died after 2 months of use

Pros: Good battery life

Cons: Problem with the battery or the mother board - keeps shutting off every couple hours for no apparent reason. Heat is no issue at all so not sure why it would just shut off while your working with it

Other Thoughts: Wouldn't have bought it if I knew I only had 2 months worth of use of it

3 out of 5 eggsCheap...

Pros: Awesome and inexpensive laptop for work(got it as shellshocker below 500$). Great processor and Asus quality as always.

Cons: Died after 5 months... Warranty was over so now fixing this in a bunch of trouble...

Other Thoughts: Get newegg warranty if you are going to buy this cheap... Fixing laptops is expensive as hell these days and you never know, these refurbished/recertified electronics are always a big risk to get defective stuff.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: I've always expected great machines from and this is no exception. Had it for a week to run test on it and forwarded it to my niece. She's in Third Heaven.

Cons: NA
