ASUS Zenbook UX31 ultrabooks are constructed with solid metal frames, which are as sturdy as they are striking. The outer shell is composed of brushed aluminum, which provides internal processors with better protection than plastic. The keyboard is made of the same material, so the device doesn't feel fragile while typing. Even though these ASUS ultrabooks are composed of aluminum, they aren't heavier than many comparable computers, weighing slightly less than 3 pounds.

The Zenbook UX31 features 1,600 x 900 pixel resolution and is capable of playing video in 1080p. The 13.3-inch HD screen also provides ample room for multiple windows and pages, allowing for easier navigation. Additionally, the ultrabook boasts a 0.3 megapixel camera that can be used for video conferencing and facial recognition logins.

The ZENBOOK is a far cry from commodity notebook PCs that are built to simply get the job done. It’s an exercise in philosophy, created by people who spend much time and effort to find a balance between technological advancement and better living. While the modern era is typified by rapid change and upheaval, the ZENBOOK epitomizes tranquility that seamlessly integrates with the lives of users. It is an initiative to fuse beauty, strength and stability in pure unison, built on new values, and evolved for a new age where finding what’s truly important in our lives is more vital than ever. It is the world’s first PC that encourages people to seek greater meaning in their interactions with technology, rather than simply offer new gadgets. Simple, subtle but totally sophisticated, the ASUS ZENBOOK can be your companion and guide in this new phase of technological evolution.

  • newegg Incredible beauty ASUS ZENBOOK achieves a unique combination of artistic craftsmanship and advanced technology. The ZENBOOK UX31 uses a precision-crafted design measuring only 3mm at the front and 9mm at the rear and weighs a feather-light 1.3kg. It presents a fetching hairline spun metal finish with concentric circles that embody the tranquility and infinite potential of this Ultrabook. Using durable but elegant aluminum offers a lighter Ultrabook that’s easier to carry, while retaining strength and durability. To accomplish a sleek and smooth metallic look, ASUS developed new mounting methods that reduce screw usage by 12%, taking inspiration from hand-crafted luxury wrist watches. Despite the compact form factor, ASUS ZENBOOK doesn’t skimp on tantalizing graphics, rendering everything from multimedia to productivity in amazing fidelity. High definition visuals look better on the world’s first 450cd/m2 panel on any Ultrabook, making dark areas clearer, while light areas stand out in vivid detail.
  • newegg Impressively Responsive One of the key advantages of the ASUS ZENBOOK is its smartphone-like spontaneity and always-on design. Regardless of how long the Ultrabook remains in standby, it can resume in just two seconds thanks to exclusive ASUS Super Hybrid Engine II technology. In effect, this means users have no reason to shut the ASUS ZENBOOK down, eliminating the need for lengthy boot ups. And with exclusive ASUS Super Hybrid Engine II technology, the ASUS ZENBOOK can stay in standby for up to two weeks. Instant on functionality automatically backs up data to the SSD should the battery level drop below 5%, removing the risk of data loss due to a drained battery. The ZENBOOK therefore adds worry-free usability to its list of advantages.
  • newegg Incredible green Dedicated Battery Saving Mode boosts battery charge by as much as 25% for longer usability and range, free from the need to stay close to wall sockets or adapters. So that you’re always in the know when it comes to battery life, the exclusive ASUS PowerWiz utility provides accurate info on available charge by specific usage conditions, so you can plan better.
  • newegg Incredible performance While compact and light, the ZENBOOK never misses a beat with amazing technology that offers the fastest, most efficient and most breathtaking experience in its class. The 2nd generation Intel Core i5 CPU comes equipped with energy-efficient power that pushes multitasking and multimedia forward to new levels of excitement. ASUS ZENBOOK models ship with SATA 6Gb/s solid state drives rather than older mechanical storage options, making the most of the latest hard drive interface standard with double the bandwidth of SATA 3Gb/s. USB 3.0 also comes standard, upping data speeds by as much as ten times compared to USB 2.0. On average, ASUS ZENBOOK offers seven times faster data connectivity next to competing models, boosting the user experience in every application.
  • newegg Incredible cooling To accommodate so much powerful technology on a compact form factor, ASUS engineers have developed custom cooling and thermal designs that use a V-shaped air channel to increase air flow, as well as unique beryllium copper alloy components to better handle heat. There are even copper fins to direct heat away out of the case, so ASUS ZENBOOK always stays cool. While thinner and lighter than competing models, ASUS ZENBOOK is also more powerful, and runs at lower temps for increased longevity and reliability.
  • newegg Incredible audio ASUS ZENBOOK outputs staggeringly rewarding and impactful sound that far exceeds its compact size. In fact, it’s the kind of sound you’d usually associate with standalone surround setups! Based on cooperation between the ASUS Golden Ear team and Bang & Olufsen ICEpower, ASUS ZENBOOK outputs incredible audio that’s the best among all Ultrabook in its class. Custom design includes an oval voice coil for clearer vocals, oversized shielded speaker magnets for more impact and better bass, plus aluminum rings to secure speakers and reduce vibration. This is further helped by ASUS ZENBOOK’s aluminum body, which conducts and insulates sound very well at the same time. Lifelike audio via Smart Dynamic Range Control (DRC) means sheer sound enjoyment in every situation.

4 out of 5 eggsMy first Asus

Pros: I love the battery life, the aluminum keyboard, the speed. I love just about everything in my ultra book. But I have yet too see its true potential once I start school and use it to its limits.

Cons: Installing all the programs is very time consuming and frustrating after rebooting it 7 times, after that it runs smoothly now. I just wish it had more memory. I learned keep the current projects on the laptop and back it up and leave everythng else in the external hard drive or else it will slow down the ddr3.

Other Thoughts: I still wish it had a backlit keyboard.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy Asus

Pros: Lightweight, good display, long battery life.

Cons: The UX21E's signal to the TV cuts out if the unit moves. I have tried 4 micro HDMI micro adapters, but still have the problem. These adapters work with my Asus tablet, so the problem is with the computer. It's been back to Asus four times. Even the VGAadapter supplied by Asus will not fit the micro HDMI port. They replaced the system board and keyboard because of other problems. Asus service is really terrible. They talk politely, but do nothing correctly. I have sent them negative feedback three times with no response back. It has taken two to three phone calls just to get the proper paperwork for the return. I got two different stories when I asked about replacement because I feel the unit is defective. One rep told me that they would replace the unit if they failed after three attempts. Another rep told me that Asus does not replace defective merchandise and that I should take it up with Newegg. Also, they don't update their repair info on their website.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that your repaired unit is also having problems. So the adapter to the micro HDMI to VGA does not go on properly. You also said that when you move the laptop that you lose connection from your tv.

You will have to send your unit in for service once again.
Please provide me with your service and RMA number so I can create an RMA number for you to send it in for service.

1 out of 5 eggsDead--Repaired--Dead Again

Pros: Nice looking and fast (if I'm able to start it).

Cons: Problem developed where unit will not start from Shutdown or Sleep mode.

Other Thoughts: After about 5 months of use unit would start up intermittently or not at all after pressing the On button. Sent unit in for repairs: Asus duplicated issue, replaced motherboard and DC power jack, reloaded Factory software, and returned unit. After reloading MS Office and other programs, left it on charge for a few hours in Sleep mode, but unit would not start: same issue as before. Just sent it in again; I’m really getting worried about this ultrabook.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that your repaired zenbook is having the same issue. Could be a software related issue. What programs are you installing? Have you tried pressing the F9 key to restore the operating system. By doing this you will have to reinstall all your programs. When you get the repaired laptop back test it out without any of your installed software and see if it has the same problem. Try putting the software one by one and test it through each software.

1 out of 5 eggsAt your own risk

Pros: Design & Performance (when it works)

Cons: Reliability & Support

Other Thoughts: My US31E crashed after 4 weeks of ownership. The unit would not recognize the hard drive. The unit was sent back and the hard drive replaced (RMA# USG9255570). As a result all of my data was lost. It took ~ 3 weeks to get the unit back. When it arrived the operating system they installed was a downgrade (Professional to Premium). I was told (Service # 1884296) I had two options:

1. Send it back
2. Purchase a recovery disk

Sorry, but I already paid for this software and I won't ship back this computer for another 3 weeks. That would mean more than 1/12 of my warranty and that ASUS or FedEx will have had my computer longer than me.

It's a nice unit, but I wish I bought the apple instead.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that all your data has been wiped out. We could not get your data because the hard drive was bad. All we could do was to put back the default operating system we put on our zenbooks and put it in the replacement hard drive.

Here is a link below to support your product in the future. If you need to update drivers or the bios you will find all the information here as well as an electronic manual.

2 out of 5 eggshorrible keyboard

Pros: I love everything about this, with one glaring exception. It looks great, is light, runs cool and is quiet. Touchpad works pretty well for me (it's an Elan). I like how it comes with ethernet and CGA dongles. Stylish case (and box for what that's worth)

Cons: The keyboard is the worst I have ever used. Pressing off center feels and sounds like the key has depressed all the way, but frequently nothing is registered. It's inconsistent too. Pressing the same place can register a stroke on one press, but not on the next.

Other Thoughts: Without a usable keyboard, using this machine is torture. It's easier for me to type on my eee 900. Not getting another Zenbook until I hear it's been fixed, and am able to confirm it myself. Too few reviews said anything about it (though having tried it, it's pretty easy to find people complaining about it on the web now)

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the keyboard is not registering the keys when you type. Have you tried updating the drivers and the bios? That usually solves the abnormalities. Here is a link below with all the information you need about your laptop. Also under the knowledge tab it tells you how to update the bios.

2 out of 5 eggsLooks good, frustrating to use.

Pros: The Zenbook looks great. It has great specs too. It's light, portable, and comes with the adapters you'll want and is priced competitively.

The recovery partition is easy to use (from my experience, you'll need it so that's a "pro", unfortunately).

Windows itself runs fairly well on it.

The screen is good mainly because the resolution, which is higher than the run of the mill laptops out there with comparable sizes. The screen quality (color/brightness/etc) seems good too.

Cons: The software ASUS bundles with the Zenbook is absolutely some of the worst stuff you'll find from any OEM. It takes up lots of system resources, it's full of bugs, and the absolute worst part: uninstalling certain things will actually remove functionality.

The trackpad is horrible. There's no beating around the bush on that. It's "jumpy". It's also really easy to click accidentally when the tap to click function is enabled. If you disable tap to click, the click is too hard and not 100% accurate. This is with the Elantech hardware (supposedly the "good" version). There is no sensitivity settings from what I can find.

I'm a programmer for a living with a long history of IT support under my belt. I played with different driver versions, software updates, BIOS and firmware versions and nothing can help the trackpad completely. You can get it usable with enough tinkering, but it's really not worth the trouble.

Other Thoughts: I got the version with all the "good" hardware, which is silly there are multiple hardware revisions handed out seemingly at random. This includes the Elantech touchpad hardware. I can't stress enough that the touchpad really ruins this machine.

Like others I had problems with the wireless adapter also, however I was able to fix these with the right combination of updates. I don't knock eggs for this as it's good that ASUS recognized and fixed the problem.

Bloatware has also gotten a little out of hand in this case. There isn't necessarily a lot of third party stuff though, that's easy to remove. The bad stuff is from ASUS, there must be 20 little apps in the ASUS programs folder. You can't just remove those apps either, particularly the power management app.

Unfortunately I'm stuck with it. The Newegg/ASUS/laptop return policy isn't good, only offering a replacement. If I could get my money back I would.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the design of the unit doesn't suite your needs. You are right about the track pad it is very easy to click highlight a word and start typing in between a word.

Thank you for the feedback and comments. We always strive to make our laptops the best from our competitors.
