5 out of 5 eggsDesktop Replacement is a true testament to the laptop!

Pros: FAST: so yeah, this beast is FAST. I can stream, transfer files, Skype my buddies, and still play Bad Company 2 or another graphics-intensive game without much heat or complaint from the computer.

LOW HEAT: in the beginning I thought there were going to be heat issues, even with the massive fan on the back, but NOPE, this thing is built like a tank - doesn't get to 60C unless you benchmark the fker while doing a bunch of other things at once.

FUTUREPROOF: I got this in Oct. of 2011 expecting it to be trash by 2013, but no, this thing is futureproof like crazy, being able to play the best in 2011 AND 2013.

CUSTOMIZABLE: After about a year I got tired of HDDs and switched to a 512GB SSD, as well as 16GB of DDR3 RAM. Never looked back - the installation was flawless and easy, and dang, were they good upgrades for CHEAP (well, RAM is pretty inexpensive these days anyhow... $90 for 16GB!)! Can't wait to change out the Sandybridge CPU with an ivyBridge (if available, and at a good price), or the video card for an even BETTER experience (580M anyone? :D)

Cons: FRIGGIN HUGE: This thing is so massive that I had to buy a specialty laptop bag (Everki Beacon) to fit the dang thing - and even then, it doesn't fit in the designated compartment! I had to shift it into the main area to get the thing to fit! I should have bought a Titan, but I was WAYYY too cheap, heh!

NO OTHER INCLUDED ACCESSORIES: This isn't really a con, because then you can specify everything you want, from Mouse, to Gamepad, to headset! -- great for being able to do whatever you want with. :)

NO TOUCHSCREEN: While this WAS made in 2011, I was really hoping for the $1200 CAD price tag that there'd be a pretty touchscreen for the Win8 upgrade I wanted to do. Without touchscreen, it's not really worth it to move up an OS version, so I'll stick with 7 for as long as this laptop lives.

HEAVY: I said "bulky", but did I mention heavy? As an arthritic user, this thing is NOT a one-hander laptop. You need to physically TRY to carry this bugger around, as it's bulky, heavy, and a little cumbersome to get somewhere to plant. Easier than a desktop, but definitely one of the harder laptops to be mobile with.

Blu-Ray doesn't write, only reads: this problem is self-evident, as I figured it'd be a reader/writer... but sometimes it doesn't even READ disks I put in for the car! :(

Ah well, time to move to IP phones and auto-detecting devices with awesome speakers. :)

Other Thoughts: Well, two years this October, but same difference, right? I've used this for two years without hesitation, and besides a few stupid BSODs (tried plugging in 33 devices just to see what would happen), it's been running awesomely. Lately the Sidebar.exe stopped behaving, but problems only arise that I am able to fix. None of that "your graphics driver has crashed because we hate you".
Trying to get USB 3.0 to work with my hub properly, but besides that, I love you, ASUS <3.
Also bought a TF600 from these bros, would also recommend! Don't do Win8 on this as there's no touchscreen, so it's hard to get used to the desktop.

Worth it, overall. Especially if you WANT something like an Alienware but don't have the money. This is good for customizing, iterating, and generally gaming/doing everything on. A true Desktop Replacement if I've ever seen one.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, nearly perfect machine.

Pros: The g74 is an outstanding, near perfect machine. The screen quality is exceptional with 1080p HD resolution and wide viewing angles; the gtx 560m renders content quickly. The chicklet keyboard is responsive as is the touchpad most of the time*. The machine is dead quiet and stays cool, even when throwing tougher content at it. I'm very pleased with the machine**

Cons: 1. The touchpad can be a bit jumpy at times. If you're using this as a desktop replacement (or for any gaming) an external mouse is the way to go. Before I upgraded the bios, it was very annoying at times. Be warned, for some it didn't address the issue.

2. Bloatware. Lot's of bloatware**

3. The sound is disappointing. It's an hd machine with a blu-ray drive and Asus really dropped the ball on the audio and speakers. What's truly frustrating though is that I've managed to mitigate that by buying...the Asus Xonar usb sound dongle...which does a fine job, buy makes me wonder why that quality wasn't built into the machine.

Other Thoughts: **At the same time I ordered my XC-1, I bought a Crucial M4 128gb ssd. So, once I got the machine, I made my software backups, downloaded drivers, and promptly did a clean install onto the SSD without the bloatware. The machine simply screams -- 20 second boot time. Enjoy it if you can get your hands on one; I got mine at a steep discount thanksgiving day from newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop but way too big

Pros: Amazing stats. This is one of the highest performance laptops you can buy right now. i7 processor, 7200 rpm HDD, blu-ray, gtx 560m. It will play any game out there, all but a few at highest settings. With this laptop you don't need a desktop. It's actually more powerful than most desktops. Unless you are a pretty serious gamer you don't need this laptop.

Cons: Size. That is it's one and only con. It's just WAY WAY too big and heavy. I knew how big it was from the description but once I got it I was still very shocked by its size. It's huge. And not just because of the 17" screen either. It's very thick and HEAVY, 9.5 lbs. Too heavy. Buy this item only if you never plan on taking it anywhere. It might be ok if you attend LAN parties but you aren't toting this to school to take notes on.

Other Thoughts: For me it was just too big and heavy. I couldn't see myself ever taking it anywhere, ever. Which kind of defeats the whole point of having a laptop. I called NE and they were awesome enough to RMA mine with a restocking fee despite it being a no return item. They gave me NE credit instead and I was able to buy a 15" i5 laptop with a gt 540 card for half the price of this one. It's also only 5.7 lbs. For me it's a much better choice. If you want the massive G74 then it's an amazing system, just be sure you can accept the amazing size and weight that comes with it. And ask yourself if a desktop system might not fill the role better.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it!

Pros: Fastest, coolest, most quiet, best computer I've ever owned. Stays cool after running weeks non stop, connected to 4 external displays. Runs Secondlife in High settings, Max draw distance is beautiful and smooth.
Durable construction, not flimsy.
Well designed portable workstation with 1080 display.

Cons: none really. Linux graphics drivers but in time maybe issues will be solved

Other Thoughts: Removed some bloatware, disabled Windows Search [service].

Installed Lubuntu 11.10 and Commodore OS alongside WIndows 7, hard to tell which runs games Smoother-both do. Only game I may play sometimes is SL and it ran great in each OS. Connected 3 USB to VGA adapters to this PC for 4 external displays.

Also purchased an Acer Aspire 7750G w ATI 6650M which was supposed to do the multiple monitor set up this machine is doing, but couldn't. Both are fast but i like this so much better, wish I'd got another of these while on sale instead of the Acer now..

5 out of 5 eggsFastest Computer Yet

Pros: -Dual HD bays
-up to 16 GB ram allowed
- 3GB 192 bit video card
- quad core processor
-backlit keyboard
-Bluray drive
-calculator shortcut key for business work
-Full HD screen for spreadsheets
-BUT above all it runs amazingly cool no matter what the ambient temps and no matter what I am doing on it.

Cons: -Had a conflicts with the drivers/utilites on the Asus website and some software I use. However, after some work on the Asus forums that has been sorted out with more a recent Asus keyboard utility and a decision not to install one of my programs on this laptop.
-My WD Passport 1TB 3.0 hardrive will not stay recognized. It drops out and re-attaches every several minutes when plugged into the USB 3.0 usb slot. Therefore it can't be used as whatever I'm doing is interrupted and lost. This is a common problem with the G74sx and this HD. So either I have to wait for new drivers to fix it, buy another 3.0 drive, or just do without. Currently I am doing the latter as 2.0 is bearable for backups and I have 2 HD's in my laptop now.

Other Thoughts: After receiving this, I dropped a Intel 320 160GB SSD into the open slot. It was super easy and I just rebooted and selected the SSD as my boot drive and installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 on it using the OEM code from the bottom of the laptop. Bootup time is at 23 seconds from the Bios screen!!! That made installing drivers and restarting each time the quickest install I have ever done. The 750 GB (7200 rpm) is perfect for storage.
I also bought a 8GB 1066 Gskill memory kit and dropped it in last week. I have zero worries about running out of free space in ram and Windows 7 willingly fills a large percentage of the 16GBs with cached data.
Above all- it runs so cool. Average work like right now the temps are 41/35/39 (Processor/HD/video card). Heavy gaming (BF3 at high specs) brings it up to 69/38/65. That is in a room that is about 85 degrees F. I will use it often overseas where there is no AC and the temps are 100+ F with high humidity. This will be perfect!

5 out of 5 eggsFollow up & more thoughts

Pros: Following up since I didn't remember to sing ALL the praises of this beautiful machine. Blu-Ray 4X, what a fantastic picture! The BD drive was 1 of the major selling points of this laptop, not a must but was not available in any laptops of this price & feature set. Lighted keyboard is a plus. Minimal bloat, easily removed by me but found a nice app called GameFast that lets you turn off services (after I had done this manually thru the Windows interface). Norton automatically uninstalled Trend A/V for me. Great size, it's sitting in front of my 24" LCD doesn't look THAT much smaller, of course it's not the same but it's currently my desktop replacement & a pleasure after coming from a netbook screen, it's a perfect desktop replacement. Accidental damage warranty gives peace of mind (must register). USB3 port, after a few hours of light web browsing the huge vents in the rear were still room temp, I can put my cooling pad away. Good placement won't be blocked.

Cons: No FireWire, but I knew that & have it on other machines so not really a concern here. You can't find it anywhere now anyways it seems. No e-Sata but I never use it, just be aware if you need that port. No express card either, hard to find nowadays also. That's about it, everything else is tops on this machine.

Other Thoughts: It's not light at 9.5 lbs, not a problem for me but was actually lighter than I expected in my old case but last year I was carrying a Qosmio. Remember it's a 17"+, just maybe too heavy for a teen girl so be aware. My Sumdex case mentioned in my 1st review is arriving tomoro, I will follow up on any problems with it if necessary, my Qosmio fits so I'm sure it will be fine. Monitoring GPU temp, not gaming, but it stays perfectly cool, I know when I photoshopped on my last machine it rose but well within safe parameters so this is not a concern either, this laptop has everything going for it so if you see it come back in stock & you are looking for something well made from a reliable manufacturer in this size & price range I would say go for it. Also their technical service was very good & I got thru almost immediately during the day.

Peace out.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Product

Pros: Stays cool after hours of intense gaming (BF3, Skyrim, Wow, Rift).
Solid Construction.
Plenty of Ports.
Whisper quiet under full load.
Rips through every game Ive tried.
Room for upgrades later.
Beautiful Screen.

Cons: Not a con really, but dont expect a light laptop. this thing is built to smash faces and you can tell.

Other Thoughts: I am more than happy with my purchase. I can now play all my games without having to turn down the settings at all.
Games like Rift looked completely new compared to running it in low render mode.
I primarily use my pc as a desktop replacement and i dont open or move the laptop. I have a 1080p 21.5 inch monitor hooked up and it works just fine.
I did encounter one problem with one game that had nothing do with Asus and was a known problem since that game launched(GTA4) I have remedied the problem (took all of 5 minutes) and all is well.
Overall this laptop is 10/10 and i will be looking at Asus for future needs.

5 out of 5 eggsTHIS THING ROCKS!!!

Pros: beautiful screen, GTX560M 3GB, boots like lightning w/o SSD, (possible future upgrade). I did turn off some services & startup tasks. i7-2630-2.0Ghz can prolly handle anything I throw at it w/o breaking a sweat, 4 cores 8 virtual threads. Plugged in for now so can't say on batt life yet. Fantastic buy for the price. 1 easy open bottom panel w/ space for 2 more DIMMs & HD, even provided the screws for HD. Glad I didn't order custom build from elsewhere just to have the SSD put in for me, seems like a simple install & I have built some desktops also. Ordered on Fri got on Mon UPS. You can't beat this package at this price. My 2nd ASUS I trust them, 24/7 tech support.

Cons: weak sound, but I plug in speakers, can HDMI to my Bravia also. UPS left box B4 I could open door, wish the Egg would code delivery to require a signature, but not gonna dock an egg for that, UPS trax tells you the exact day so I planned on being home.

Other Thoughts: There is only 1 comparable similar line out there that has something somewhat above this, with a GTX570, great sound (so I've heard) and a cool color keyboard, and a bunch of hotkeys. It's gone on here but was a lot more, I didn't realize the sound would be this weak on this ASUS, but it's about the same as on my 1st ASUS. I just wanted the 570 but couldn't afford the extra $$$, I don't think ASUS has any 570's out now so wait if you want 1 of those, I've heard there on are only Beta NVidia drivers out for the 570M though.

Also didn't really fit in my old case that was included with my 1st ASUS 17.0", this is 17.3" it's slightly bigger, be aware of that. Sumdex 17" expandable case fit my Qosmio 18.4" so I ordered another assuming it will fit, just so you know.
