1 out of 5 eggsNot Quality

Pros: Nice sleak design.

Cons: Very fragile design. I have had this laptop for over a year but it started falling apart on me within 6 months. One of the USB ports was damaged and off center so it did not work properly. The screws that hold the entire thing together start falling out or the internal pieces holding them in broke off. This resulted in the piece that holds the screen down to become undone and start breaking the laptop slowly apart. The charger port is broken as well as the Ethernet port not. The screen is very loose and flimsy and never holds up for long periods of time. Very cheaply made.

5 out of 5 eggsBought it for the wife

Pros: Replace the HDD that came with it with a Crucial M4 128GB SSD and install Linux Mint 13 (MATE) on it, and it FLIES. Compared to my laptop that cost the same price two years earlier, hers is a quad-core (versus single core), has graphics that are about 4 times faster (GFLOPS-wise), has a battery that lasts nearly 5 hours (versus 1.5 hours for mine...battery is showing its age), and just all around rocks.

Cons: Nothing I can think of...except that the keyboard keys are flatter than they look in the image. She was hoping for something like her old HP DV9000, which had keys that are raised up more. Also, the numeric keypad and the arrow keys are smooshed in an odd manner, and the arrow keys are too far to the left relative to the rest of the keyboard.

Other Thoughts: A great laptop, though it might be hard to find one now. Thought about upgrading the RAM from 4GB, but with Mint, it's never even used 4GB. My wife watches TV shows on it in a web browser a lot, and the battery still lasts 3-4+ hours. A great little machine it is....

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Laptop

Pros: Sleek design, lightweight, solid construction even though it is plastic

Cons: DVD CD drive malfunctioned in 2 months with very little use

Other Thoughts: I purchased this laptop through a deal from Newegg and it was shipped fast. The laptop is a good solid one although the plastic construction can feel a bit cheesy since my last laptop was made of metal. Maybe this is why it's lighter.
Supposedly ASUS is known for it's customer support which I needed when my dvd drive stopped working in 2 months as I needed to burn a couple of DVDs. To return the laptop was a nightmare. ASUS has a "360" accidental and manufacturer warranty which provides for prepaid return shipping to ASUS. They use FedEx and when I tried to use their prepaid "label" the FedEx authorized stories don't recognize the label BUT the closest 3rd party shipper does use it. This caused alot of grief as I called ASUS many times to find alternative shipping methods and had it escalated 3x with no creative solutions. I was able to send the laptop back through the 3rd party shipper (totally bizarre).

Right now I am waiting for my laptop to come back and I had to go to the ASUS website to find out when it was shipped. I didn't get a shipping notice to know when my laptop was coming so I can have someone wait for the laptop as most ground shipping by UPS and FEDEX are notorious for just dropping the package on the front door without signing it. ASUS didn't even ask me if I could just pick up the laptop instead of leaving the item out in the open!

1 out of 5 eggsLaptop Freezes

Pros: Inexpensive
Ok Performance

Cons: Computer freezes when it goes into sleep mode. Very difficult to get the laptop to reboot afterwards.

Other Thoughts: Bought this computer for my son and the freezing problems frustrates us both a great deal. Very dissapointed.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you are having a freezing issue with your unit. Have you tried doing a factory reset. Before you do this make sure you back up all your important things as this will return your computer back to stock. Restart your computer and keep pressing F9.

You can also make sure you updated all your bios and drivers with the link below.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for its price

Pros: Cheap, lightweight, good video card, durable

Cons: Not a power laptop, tends to heat up during elevated use, stock power supply gives off tons of heat, integrated mouse pad too sensative

Other Thoughts: Very nice laptop for its price. Not for power users or gamers though, mostly for office / homework or light gamers. Would recommend for an average user: keyboard functions are pretty standard. The two major drawbacks are that the power supply and laptop give off a ton of heat during use (not to dangerous levels in an average environment, but something to take note of), and the mouse pad is very sensative, even if I don't touch it, it will sense my hand and assume that I want to click something.

For all the ports available ( 3 USB, SD, HDMI out, along with stock ports), it is very sleek. The handrest does as advertised: even during the high use heat output, it remains cool.

5 out of 5 eggsValue Laptop

Pros: Great price to performance ratio
Good for everyday general use
Sleek design

Cons: None really. Of course you arn't going to be able to play very demanding games on it, but then again you shouldnt be buying this laptop to game on. More for document uses, internet surfing, etc.

Other Thoughts: Would definitely reccomend purchasing if youre in the market for a general purpose computer.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It's an Asus so I wasn't too worried about it sucking but I was concerned that the keyboard would be one of those annoying ones that have no travel and are hard to type comfortably on. I got this to write papers on for school, so a comfortable keyboard was a very important factor for me and I couldn't find any information on it so it was somewhat of a gamble. I'm rather pleased with it. It's as comfortable as the Dell Inspiron I'm used to. For 400 bucks, I'm incredibly happy with it.

There wasn't a huge amount of bloatware. The only thing that you really need to get rid of is the obnoxious bundled virus protection and this weird useless Asus games center. The other things Asus bundles are sorta useful or non-obtrusive.

Build quality is very impressive for being so cheap. There is some flex in the keyboard (which is to be expected) but the hinge feels solid and I can pick it up while it's open and it doesn't feel like anything is moving wrong. The chassis is impressively solid

The processor is fast and handles a lot of tasks well. I haven't yet seen it spike past 30% utilization, although I've only really had it for the weekend.

Cons: The hard drive is slow and there's not a lot of memory. However, you're not going to find a new laptop in this price range that has much more.

The screen isn't amazing. Just looking at spec's, some of the others in this price range probably out do it. However colors look find and the viewing angle is good enough. I wish it wasn't so glossy though.

I would have been annoyed that it came with Windows 7 Home premium and not pro but I plan on taking advantage of the Windows 8 upgrade, so that ends up being a non-issue.

Other Thoughts: I was looking for a laptop with a solid processor and a small hard drive/not a huge amount of memory. Those can be upgraded later. There's a few laptops in this price-range that are similarly spec'd but I trust Asus so this is the one I went with them.

It costs less than 20 bucks to double the memory, which I intend to as soon as I can. There's a few 128 gig solid state drives for around 100 and I intend to upgrade to one of them. A 7200 RPM hard disc drive would be an even cheaper upgrade. With those tweaks, which would take the total for this laptop up to around 550 bucks, I'm sure it would be super fast. I haven't seen a single laptop that's not hundreds of dollars more that has a solid state drive.

In comparison to the Dell Inspiron I have access to that cost 200 dollars more, this one is amazing. It performs just as well and feels much more solid.

1 out of 5 eggsWise people read this and run.

Pros: It is cheap.Makes a good paper weight. Excellent tool for estimating the height of a cliff, just drop it off the edge and time how long it takes to hit the ground. Nice product if you could use a new computer for about a month. Great while it worked.

Cons: It is cheap. I purchased this computer for my girlfriend 37 days ago so we could communicate while she was in school. We are currently separated by 2000 miles. :( When you plug it in to charge, it wont charge. It is dead now. She purchased a new cord. Still wont charge. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a real expensive paper weight. I will never purchase a Asus product again. A wise person would do the same.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the unit no longer charges. When you plug the ac adapter does your laptop even come on? I am trying to see if the problem is the ac adapter, battery, or dc pin connector on the laptop.
