1 out of 5 eggsASUS have poor business practices

Pros: Lets get this out of the way. This notebook is BEAUTIFUL. Sleek, sexy, and fast.

Cons: I needed to reinstall Windows 8 due to some major errors that popped up (system would not create recovery discs, directx errors, etc). Asus said I needed to RMA the unit so they could reinstall windows. They would not give me the software to do it, they insisted I send the computer away for weeks. Just to reinstall the OS. I'm not kidding.

Excerpt from conversation:
-----

Me: You mean to tell me that I have to RMA my brand new notebook, and send it away for a few weeks just to have you guys refresh Windows 8?

Archie: Yes, that is correct.

-----

Normally I fix my own computer stuff, well Asus removed my ability to do so.

Don't deal with these jokers.

I'm returning mine tomorrow.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that they said you have to return the unit in order to reinstall windows 7.

Have you installed windows 8 already? Here is a video below with a linux program, you can install windows 7 pretty easily if you upgraded from windows 8.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Notebook!

Pros: Amazing battery life.. being a college student I have used it for 7+ hours without a charge whilst typing papers and browsing web.

Being an ultrabook, I have received many compliments on the slim design and polished aluminum finish.

Track pad is great for scrolling and flipping to and from previous pages.

Another plus of being an ultrabook is the quick startup time. I hardly ever shut it completely down, but when I do I never have to wait more than 30 seconds for it to completely boot. Usually it is left in sleep mode where it is on within a couple seconds of opening the laptop.

Cons: Few negatives but I guess having an i5 instead of an i7. You do not have the capability of editing video or playing gpu intensive games or any high games for that matter. That being said you do achieve longer times between charges, and who would use a laptop for this stuff anyway.

Also I am not a huge fan of the Bang and Olufson speakers; they are very mediocre.

Other Thoughts: Great for a college kid lifestyle with its quick startup times, light weight frame, and ease of use, but not recommended for applications that require more processing power.

4 out of 5 eggsQuality Control Issues

Pros: Great overall laptop. Appears to be constructed with high quality materials as expected from the price.

Cons: The touchpad was sensitive to palm action while typing on the keyboard. After updating the touchpad driver, it improved drastically. The drivers are not at maximum potential, but it is apparent that the issues that users have complained about can and will be fixed in future driver releases. My unit had two blobs of pixels that were discolored when displaying white/grey images. I sent it back as defected and had my money reimbursed. I am purchasing another, hoping that I win the lottery with a flawless system.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Worth it. Not Happy

Pros: -Sleek Design
-Easy On
-Nice Screen

Cons: -Trackpad is AWFUL. I type up notes in my classes and will accidentally come in contact with track pad...which will then, depending on how it's feel like that day, either elect to move my cursor to another portion of my notes, so I then enter a bunch of text in a completely unintended place or it will select a large portion of the notes I just took and replace with whatever my next text entry is, which is really ideal (Sarcasm)

The other big issue is that the AC adapter won't work with every (a lot) of outlets. I've tried this adapter on many outlets and half (always the most important half) the time the light indicating charge will not turn on, which is great when you have another 3 hours worth of class and an hour worth of battery left, instead of just worrying about taking notes and what I need to do I have to worry about the battery on my laptop dying.

Other Thoughts: I did two months worth of research before buying this item. I look at competitors, price, specification and while I did read some things about the trackpad issue, I couldn't imagine it was this bad.

The charger issue is just insane I'll have to leave class or the library to go home and charge my laptop or run around like an idiot trying to plug it into different outlets trying to get it work. It's completely and totally ridicolous for a $1200 laptop.

These two things are essential and basic functions that, for $1200, should present even the most minor problems. If I could return the computer I would

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the ac adapter is not working in all the outlets. You can call our support line and see if they can send you another one. Regarding about the trackpad you can always change the sensitivity by clicking on the white up arrow on the lower right hand and click on the mousepad icon then scroll to the bottom where it says palm tracking and change the sensitivity.

Also you can turn off the trackpad if you know that you are not really going to use the mouse while you are typing by pressing FN and F9.

4 out of 5 eggsGood but 1 Bright Pixel out of Box -Revised

Pros: Update from previous review:

I ordered another device at my expense so our daughter would have a laptop at the start of college in hopes that Newegg would honor the one dead pixel policy. Just received Email confirmation this morning from NewEgg that refund will be processed in 3-5 business days. Overall RMA process took 10 days and another 3-5 business days for refund.

Cons: None so far, besides the inconvenience of the RMA process and having to shell out the cost of another laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsGood but 1 Bright Pixel out of Box

Pros: This is for our daughter who starts college this Fall. Out of the box this was great. Not much bloat comes with it, a few ASUS products, and McAfee which was removed and swapped with the antivirus software we use for all computers in our home.
Track pad is very responsive and does well not to read movement while you type although it took a few minutes to adjust it according to daughter's typing style. WIFI radio is very strong, picks up a very good signal in the weakest part of our log cabin. Keyboard touch is wonderful and the backlit keys really looks impressive.
Can't say enough about the monitor's resolution, this is one of the best monitors I have ever seen on a laptop except for the one dead pixel.
Speakers sound good for a laptop
The only minor complaint I have is that the screen folds back easily, maybe it's just these light weight laptops but it's not something that bothers my daughter.

Cons: Only 128GB of SSD space
Costly
One dead pixel out of the box (researching ASUS' policy on this as I write)

Other Thoughts: Will most likely upgrade the SSD to 512GB next year as prices continue to fall. I paired this with a Seagate external 1TB drive and installed ITunes and other software she likes but has no business on such a small SSD. MS Office was pre-installed but requires a key to activate. Will know more about this Saturday when Office University gets here and will update review then. 4 stars for now until I find out if the 30 day dead pixel policy is honored and how painful/long this process will take, most manufacturers require 4 dead pixels or more to qualify for RMA so I am not that upset but since the monitor is so crisp, that one green dot really shows through.

1 out of 5 eggsRisky deal

Pros: This is greatly reviewed device and certainly big step in ultra-books design. 1080p screen is just amazing!

Cons: Bought it just because of screen. So I made sure product description: "Manufacturer Warranty: 1 Year Accidental Damage/30-Day Zero Bright Dot". So opened a box and noticed ugly green dead pixel right in the center of screen. So new egg kindly issued RMA and I sent it back for exchange. Today I got a message from newegg that Manufacture requires 5 dead pixels for replace and they will have to send me "not defective" item back. I guess I lost my money.

Other Thoughts: To be honest, if the product description stated min 5 dead pixels for exchange, I would never buy it. Think, what is the reason to buy ultra-book with a great screen, so if the screen is bad you cannot exchange it!?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that Newegg did not exchange the unit for you. Because your laptop is still within the return policy have you tried returning the unit.

Our zero-bright dot policy says even if only 1 bright dot is found then we will replace the lcd screen for you within 30 days of original purchase.

Call our tech support and get an RMA number to send the unit in to replace the screen for you.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Ultrabook

Pros: Great light little ultrabook with a super battery life. It has acceptable speed for most general user purposes. I haven't really tried games but I didn't get it for that. It boots stupid fast.

Cons: The only cons I have are a squeaky space bar that I will probably call into support about. Other than that the touchpad interferes with typing at times but I'm getting used to it.

Other Thoughts: Great buy and well made Ultrabook for someone looking for an Airbook type hardware platform that runs windows without paying for the glowing apple.

5 out of 5 eggsGood update

Pros: The look of last gen of Zenbook and that ain't bad. Asus address most of the problem they had with first gen here which is; improved keyboard with back-lite, a beter 1080p IPS screen, slightly better CPU and graphic. Most people said they hate the mouse pad but I love it because the multi-touch is a little bit more responsive than any laptop I've use. Battery time is awesome. I don't have to turn it off anymore because sleep mode is all I need (couldn't say that to a laptop).

Cons: IPS screen has light bleeding. It isn't a major problem for me but if I see it keep on spreading, I will return it. Price is a bit hefty consider you can get a gaming laptop at the same price minus the weight.

Other Thoughts: Yes, this is the best Windows Ultrabook you can by atm. Also, you will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 for $15 when Microsoft allow it sometime in the fall. Buy this if you can afford it because just a few pound make the difference.

5 out of 5 eggsThe BEST Ultrabook on the Market

Pros: Fast, Fast, Very, Very, Fast
Exceptionally Light
Silent and Cool
1920x1080 Full HD Screen
Back-Lit Keyboard
Touchpad with Great Feel and Responsive Gestures
Solid, Very Rigid Aluminum Construction
Fantastic Built-In Sound
Nice Carrying Sleeve
Adapters

I replaced my iPad 2 3G with this ultrabook. I don't miss the iPad a bit! This thing is fast! Upon first boot, I made a recovery drive and wiped the recovery partition, later joining with the main partition using a bootable partition manager. (Make sure you don't jack with the 4GB partition, as that is used for instant on!) There was quite a bit of what appeared to be bloatware initially. However, the only things I removed were the McAfee Security (in favor of Avast) and the four programs related to data security. All of the Asus stuff I left as-is. Asus includes a driver update software that automatically updated the touchpad and wireless drivers. I also installed all the windows updates. **See other thoughts; I ran out of s

Cons: Really hard to find any cons. The thing is just so dang perfect.

If I want to nit-pick, I'll say that initially I had some light screen bleed on the bottom and upper right of the screen. I resolved this accidentally while cleaning the screen with light to moderate pressure. It seems that I sort of massaged the bleed away.

It could also be about $100 cheaper, but it is certainly worth every single penny.

Other Thoughts: After getting the computer to a completely usable state in about 45 minutes (including software installation {19GB in games}), the computer shuts down in approx 6 seconds, and boots into usable Windows in about 9 seconds...before the windows logo can even fully display.

I experienced no issues with the keyboard, touchpad, or the wireless. So far everything works flawlessly.

The Zenbook can handle games at 1920x1080 resolution with no less than 30FPS at ultra settings.

I love the feel of the chicklet keyboard. It has good travel and requires the correct amount of pressure to depress. There are no dead-spots on the keys, ie, you can press the very corner of a key and it will still register the stroke. I have very accurate typing, no missed strokes, and my fingers find the keys very well. Certainly much improved over the original Zenbook.

I can't think of anything else to say except for that the screen is absolutely incredible and that the thing is just unbelievably fast.
