1 out of 5 eggsWorked six weeks in eight months

Pros: Looks good

Cons: After six weeks of ownership, the LCD became erratic. Sent it back for repair in October, 2013 and finally got it back on April 21, 2014. The display now not working in another mode. After three hours with the support group, got another RMA and it is back at ASUS.

Other Thoughts: It is very difficult to find a phone number for support.
Twice, they lost my address or email.
Parts replaced at random without explanation.
Support group has less knowledge than I do.
ASUS has an LCD problem that they will not admit to.
ASUS had a soldering problem and I suspect these are the machines they are trying to get rid of.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsWhat a joke

Pros: Fast machine, light, very portable

Cons: Bloatware cripples computer if removed, not durable, keyboard hard to use

Other Thoughts: I have had this computer for 7 months now. I have already sent it back to NewEgg for repair once, because Asus' bloatware cripples the computer if removed. (This is why other users wifi has gone out)

Next the computer started bluescreening, and became completely unusable. I contacted Asus support and was told I had a warranty on the product to repair it. I sent it into their repair facility, and was told I would have it back within two weeks. It's been over two weeks now, and for the past several days my calls have been met with "we will escalate the problem and repair will email you a quote within 24 hours." They don't email. They apparently CAN'T call me with the problem or to discuss repairs. My only option is to wait for them to actually send this nonexistent email, at which point I will also have to provide them my credit card number VIA EMAIL to authorize repairs. Um, no! Give me a call, Asus, and fix this thing already! I will never again buy another Asus product, and regret even finding this computer on this website.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Sean,

It's good to know that you like the fast, light and very portable machine. I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you regarding the delay in the turnaround time of the warranty service. Should you need further assistance, please email me at and write down service# 3561492 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

4 out of 5 eggsZenbook leaves a smooth, clean shave.

Pros: Thin, sleek, fast, reliable, high resolution.
SSD boot times are <5 seconds
ASUS updates just made my internet adapter EVEN faster
Chiclet style keyboard

Cons: Keyboard takes a bit of getting used to.
Only 2 USB ports (one on either side)
***One of the USB ports (the right one) stopped working at about 1 year of ownership. That is the -1 egg right there. A pain having to work around only 1 USB...

Other Thoughts: Exactly what I needed and a lifesaver / godsend for school and travel. Thanks Newegg!!

2 out of 5 eggsScreen dead after 6 months

Pros: Slim, light, USB 3.0, SSD, Core i5 and a good price.

Cons: Only 128GB SSD and it is the M.2 or NGFF so upgrading would be a pain. Screen died after 6 months of use and it would cost almost as much to replace as I spent to purchase it. So it is now a nice paper weight.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Device, Mine Had Issues

Pros: The Zenbook is incredibly thin and light, by far my favorite laptop I have owned. The SSD makes it boot rapidly (when it boots, I'll get to that later), and the screen is excellent. It comes with a USB to ethernet adapter and a mini-VGA to VGA adapter, so all your basic hookups are covered

Cons: My Zenbook had some issues booting. Immediately after the first Windows update it had to run a chkdsk and quite a few sectors had to be repaired. After that it would not run Windows updates at all, had BSOD, and wouldn't let me uninstall programs without problems (lock ups, crashes, etc). It required system restore to get the computer operating correctly again, but now that fails every time too. I am currently working with Newegg staff to replace the product, and they have been nothing but helpful.

Other Thoughts: If the replacement unit works as it should, I can honestly say that this is the best laptop purchase I've ever had. I've owned several over the last couple years, and the portability of this one is astounding. Don't expect it to be a desktop-replacement type device, so unless you only need it for internet it shouldn't be your only computer (I'm a software engineer student and have a good desktop for heavy use). As far as note-taking, checking email, and running less intensive programs, this ultrabook definitely fits the bill.

4 out of 5 eggsJust got mine

Pros: Mine just arrived today, and I have to say, it certainly feels nice. Light, very thin, super quick startup... Decent specs on such a little thing!

Cons: My charger is a little... finicky. It charges well enough, but if you rotate the male part that enters the computer, it stops.
I've noticed what others here are complaining about the keyboard sometimes missing keystrokes. It seems to me that this only really happens if you don't get the chicklet all the way. Also, the mousepad is *super* sensitive. I've accidentially clicked into different boxes three times while writing this review.
On the topic of the mousepad, I can't seem to find if it has scrolling, which I may miss. If this doesn't have two-finger scrolling, side-scrolling, or something similar, I should be able to manage.

Other Thoughts: All in all, I think I'm satisfied with this purchase. I was going for a super light, super thin laptop I can use for school (anything but a tablet!), and this seems like it'll work out fine. ;3

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent build quality

Pros: 1. My unit had a 1600x900 screen even though this page listed 1366x768. That was awesome.
2. Super thin.
3. Awesome build quality: feels like very well made sturdy laptop. All metal enclosure and keys.
4. Reminds me of the macbook airs that I have owned over the years.
5. Small power adapter that is easy to lug around
6. Price for a refurbished unit is amazing. Though I have seen great deals for even newer Zenbooks. Really good values.
7. SSD is good. Also, has ethernet adapter, nice.

Cons: 1. Default firmware/drivers need to be updated right away to make the touchpad work well.
2. Battery life is not as long as I had expected. I am seeing at 5-6 hours in normal usage at best.
3. My unit was clearly preowned and had fairly minor scratches and bumps. Nothing serious though.

Other Thoughts: 1. I set it up to dual boot Ubuntu 13.04. Runs fine, no issues.
2. Wish ASUS had added a displayport adapter to support 2560x1440+ resolutions and provided a displayport/hdmi to vga converter instead of mini-VGA port. They could then use the space to have an extra USB port.

3 out of 5 eggsux-31 zenbook

Pros: When viewing ultrabooks or any consumer grade Laptop, the well-known phrase "Beauty is only skin comes to mind" , but not with this zenbook. the ux-31 comes with a full aluminum chassis with a 1600x900 display, numerous expansion and display ports, and a reasonably powerful ULV i5; and I have to say, I'm in love with it, it has a good minimalist aesthetic and is extremely light weighing in at only about 2.4 pounds, but don't think it's flimsy, oh no, this is the sturdiest laptop I've ever laid my hands upon. As for the system, the 128gb SSD and 4GB of system ram coupled with the aforementioned i5 lend it an extreme degree of robustness well suited for multitasking and web browsing but not for anything graphics intensive as there is no dedicated gpu.

Cons: I knew I was taking a risk by purchasing a refurb, but I wasn't prepared for anything bad, as my other Asus products arrived and worked without any hitches. This was not the case with this laptop, even as I type this review the keyboard seems to ignore a certain amount of key presses (one out of every 15 or so) and a PSU malfunction is leading to my SSD making a constant high pitched whine, which, while not unbearable in semi-noisy environs, Is absolutely maddening when I use this laptop alone in the evenings which leads to my giving a 3-egg rating

Other Thoughts: Buying this laptop is much like playing roulette, except 5 times out of 6, you get a good laptop, but the 6th time? you get something that makes you want to commence banging your head into a flaming wall, made out of rusty nails and chalkboards.

3 out of 5 eggsAdored it until it broke

Pros: Worked beautifully out of the box, light and slim enough to fit into a large purse/small backpack, booted up wickedly fast, had better performance than my previous Dell Studio 15 despite the latter having a Core i7 processor. Very rarely did my laptop struggle to keep up with my admittedly abusive power usage, and I was so impressed while it worked. And the battery life rocked -- with average college student use (browsing the web, streaming some video, editing docs, etc.), it could last 7 hrs. Heat seemed to dissipate from right above the keyboard, which was great for my lap. Overall a beautiful, sleek design. It inspired my roommate to get a similar model!

Cons: From the start, I hated the keyboard. I'm a 100+ wpm typist but I had to slow down significantly to get all the keys to press, and probably max out at 80 now. Its internet connectivity deserved its notoriety. The touchpad would sometimes go crazy on me, and I learned to bring a mouse wherever I go. Also, the speakers were AWFUL, hence my constant use of headphones. I was happy to sacrifice these things for all the pros, however, until this week. I guess the laptop overheated on my desk while I left the room for a couple of hours (putting it to sleep, a couple of webpages open), because when I came back, the battery was leaking. I'm going to find out if I can salvage any of my drive tomorrow, but after 9 months of use, this is a stupid hardware problem to encounter. I've probably lost everything on there.

Other Thoughts: It was a refurbished model. What should I have expected? I bought it 9 months ago for $675, and it might have been worth the money had it lasted a couple of years at least. Can't believe I blew so much money.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Frist Impression

Pros: I knew that the laptop was only supposed to weigh 2.4lb's, but it felt so light when I actually got it that I was impressed. Also, I would never have known that it was refurbished if I had not been told. Not a single scratch on this bad boy, and not a single technical problem so far. I upgrade the os to windows 8 pro as soon as I got it and had no problem with the upgrade. The drivers gave me no problem. I love the USB 3.0 port. I bought a 64 gig USB 3.0 port and will enjoy the extra space and quick upload/download speeds.

Cons: As people have said, the keys are slightly stiff, but it has not been an issue for me in the least. I can just barely barely notice it, but maybe i am just a naturally hard typer.
