5 out of 5 eggsUpdate: Solution to Linux back-light issue i mentioned in last review

Pros: see my other reviews
it is very nice hardware :)

Cons: see my other reviews
the screen does not have built in magical dirt repellent, lol

Other Thoughts: to fix backlight behavior o the new BIOS after the 3.6.11 kernel you need to add this kernel boot parameter:
acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"

a modern linux system will use grub2, so you will want to edit this file:
/etc/default/grub
you will see a line that starts with this
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
if you have something special in here (you know who you are) you will need to edit the next line
i changed that entire line to this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='quite splash acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"'

before:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quite splash"
after:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='quite splash acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"'

then run sudo update-grub and then boot the new kernel and enjoy the back-light acting like it used to
I have only tested the 3.9.0-030900rc6-generic kernel but it should work on the other affected kernels

here is the bug report where i got this fix
bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55161

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Laptop!

Pros: I purchased this laptop on 10/01/12 and it has been so dependable and has a lot of features for the price. Got our income tax refund and came back to purchase another one but it states it is discontinued. Why???? This rates a 5 egg for me.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate: Has SATA III (or SATA II has worp speed)

Pros: i benchmarked a MKNSSDCR60GB (N82E16820226247) SSD (formated to ext4 in a GPT partition table) and it was able to pull 550MB/s Average so clearly this notebook has Sata III, as Sata II theoretically maxes at 300MB/s
Benchmarked using the the gnome disk utility (Disks) on ubuntu 12.10

See last 3 Reviews

Cons: Asus apparently does not know what is on there own motherboards (I would like to think they use there own boards in there notebooks)

See last 3 Reviews

Other Thoughts: Sorry for offsetting the review averages with my 4 reviews, but people knowing this has SATA III is important for anyone looking at upgrading it with a SSD

Since i have so many spare characters i may as well point out the ODD is a Samsung SN-208BB drive (N82E16827151242)

Thank my neighbor for letting me use the ssd from his desktop (i built it) to verify if this notebook has Sata III or Sata II ports

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate (Warning for linux users about BIOS upgrade)

Pros: still gets a 4.5/5 rating IMO
see last 2 reviews
can get 3 hours of battery life (max)

Cons: The latest BIOS at this time that is 210, this messed up the backlight controls on the 3.6-3.8 kernels (other kernels are untested)
on the 3.7 and 3.8 kernel software control no longer functions properly
on the 3.6 kernel the fn+F5/F6 keys don't work anymore
My Old BIOS version was 207, and the BIOS does not allow downgrade

Replacing the ODD voids the warranty, a HDD/RAM upgrade is fine

No SATA III ports according to ASUS, which is sad since the HM65 chipset supports 2 of them

Other Thoughts: I never installed the 208 BIOS, i went from 207 to 210

do downgrade your bios you have to use rma or go to a asus service center (only 5 in the US)

when the CPU hits 40C the cpu fan turns off and when it hits 45C it turn back on

if you do upgrade/change the dvd drive the screw is under the keyboard, there are 5 locks on a springs that pushes up (towards the bottom of the screen) above the esc, f5, f9, prt sc/sysrq, and end keys then key keyboard lifts up with ease
here is the manual, got this via asus tech support:

5 out of 5 eggsGreat fot the price

Pros: Inexpensive
Enough horsepower for everyday use
Has all the features that a normal user would need
Bought two and both have run hassle free for 6 months now

Cons: I don't like the keyboard layout at all. If you use multiple keyboards everyday, this one will trip you up.
Had to remove a lot of trail and junk software.
Pretty minimal battery life

Other Thoughts: For the price you won't find a better deal. There are plenty of better laptops out there that offer more, but if you need something to do paperwork and internet stuff with it perfect.

1 out of 5 eggsLaptop Broke After First Use

Pros: The specs on this laptop are slightly better than average for a laptop in this price range.

Cons: As you would expect, when running the set-up you are prompted to save the factory settings to disc. Putting the first disc in was not a problem. Getting the first disc out was a pain in the rear. What sort of laptop's eject button on the CD drive breaks the 2nd time you press it? The answer is- this laptop's. I have no confidence in Asus products now. I'm getting another Lenovo, instead.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that your unit did not function right out of the box. If you are still under the return policy with newegg they can exchange it for you.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing For the Price

Pros: Full keyboard
6GB Memory
Good Screen Size
Fast
Allows many applications to run without losing speed

Cons: About 2 hours of battery life (but that's not too bad)
Moderate bloatware
The touchpad is prone to accidental zooming and unzooming of your screen.

Other Thoughts: I use my laptop for mostly personal use and my school work. I don't really game on it except for the occasional Sims3 and we had to go around the Graphics card to get it to work. It does what I need it to do and performs well. The only thing that I really dislike is the constant accidental zooming in and out on the touchpad. I have learned a quick fix for that though. Ctrl + 0 will make your screen go back to 100% Other than that little hiccup I think that it was a great buy especially for the price. I needed something quick for school and was glad that I found this for such a resonable price at $329.99 I'm normally a fan of Toshiba, but I am pleasently impressed with this.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far...

Pros: So Good... Can't complain of what I got for the price: this laptop and a free case. I put a SSD in it, as I usually do with laptops, and removed some bloatware. Happy...

Cons: None.

2 out of 5 eggsGood Laptop, Awful Wireless

Pros: Lots of Memory, Nice Speed

Cons: Built in Wireless is completely terrible. i cant get more than 25 feet away from the wireless router with this laptop when all of my other wireless devices (laptops, ipod, iphone, Bluray) have a signal anywhere throughout my house. Plan on purchasing a USB wireless dongle if you buy this unit and want to use the wireless. I purchased this one and it works great.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704078

Trackpad occasionally resets to the corner of the screen when in use.

Other Thoughts: 4 stars for the laptop, 0 stars for the built in wireless

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you are having a problem with the wireless. Here is a link below where you can update the drivers that may solve the wifi issue. Just make sure you select which operating system you are currentyl running.
