3 out of 5 eggsPurchased as general gaming/internet notebook for wife

Pros: Heavy duty construction - this thing has heft, which is a GOOD thing. I'm tired of notebooks/laptops that are so lightweight they break after a few months generic use.

Fast - a big upgrade in terms of CPU and graphics ability from her last laptop and nothing she's tried to play has given her any problems at all (bear in mind she isn't playing top-of-the-line graphically challenging games though although I'm sure this thing can handle those).

Ability - plenty of outputs and ports on this baby. You won't be left wanting for a USB port or HDMI connection to be sure!

Cons: WIndows 8 pre-installed. I really REALLY wish we'd have had an option when it comes to the operating system. Windows 8 is every bit as annoying and horrible as you've heard. My goodness this OS sucks on ice. Even after the 8.1 update it's a chore to use. Why oh why MS?!? I've been debating dropping another $100 and simply buying Windows 7 and installing that instead, but I've already dropped $999 on this beast!

ASUS - this *used* to be a Pro, Asus used to make excellent products that lasted - and if they didn't, gave great customer support. Sadly, 2 of the last 3 Asus products I've purchased (this notebook and 2 wireless routers) have given me problems within the first month or two. Worse, getting support from Asus has been difficult and unwieldy. I'm sorry, but a product still under warranty should be shipped back at Asus' expense, not the customers! Why are we paying to send back faulty equipment you sold us?

This particular Notebook has developed a weird habit of suddenly and randomly losing power while being used. This has got to be a build/power supply issue as the notebook was actually plugged in all three times this has happened (over the past two weeks). I have just initiated contact with Asus support about this issue, so I'll have to hold off judging how they handle this particular issue until it's resolved.

5 out of 5 eggsIt seems I got the good one...

Pros: Mine has worked great with no problems or failures. I've watched a few things on disassembly and customization and I must say I am really very impressed, it even managed to impress my co-workers at geek squad.

It has an independent heat sync for the CPU and a second heat sync and extra fan to cool the GPU (and it is a real GPU connected to the MOBO via a slim PCI slot). So twin fans and twin heat syncs are very cool and make this the first laptop I've ever used that is always cool to the touch when gaming... so I don't have anywhere to put my hands to warm them up in the winter when I cannot afford my heating bill... maybe that should be a 'con' thing...

Lots to like then with a very customizable and very powerful laptop.

Cons: An odd charging issue... it will not charge the battery when the processor and GPU are at high output, the power consumption is too great to allow for power to be sent to the battery. That said I didn't buy this laptop because it was light or small or had good battery life, I bought this laptop because it is a monster that eats smaller laptops and some desktops... Its huge and won't fit in most bags, including the epic 'bag of holding.'

Beyond that nothing has gone wrong... that said I seem to have gotten the only good one, because tons of people list huge blocks of text saying how these are bad.

Other Thoughts: Before you buy this (it is a big investment), go google up some videos on disassembly to see what I mean about the dual fan/heat sync thing, the design behind the scenes on this is very interesting.

4 out of 5 eggsASUS SOLID

Pros: ASUS, what more needs said. always rock solid with these guys. got it for $500 off. that's what sealed the deal for me. i'm no average user and i am no super tech but i can run circles around most people. threw a bunch of stuff at this thing from burning to rendering, games, downloading and 1TB file transfers (all at once) and it still kept up and blew through it. bought for my AMD duel core HP replacement. after having an i7 (and 32G ddr3 1666) in my home rig i knew it had to be i7 or bust. nothing else keeps up with me. my old HP sucked for heat. this thing is cool and quiet even after hours and hours of use. a gamers delight. sure its big and heavy but that is what i wanted. sound board is good not sure what complaints are about. back lit keyboard is awesome is my first one. always wanted one with HP, now i have. great addition. battery is so tiny. my old HP took the whole side to side. this thing is half a pack of cigarettes. i can get about 1 to 1.5 hours depending on what i'm doing. 2nd HDD expandable. RAM expandable. sub-w is nice addition to sound. didn't have before. key setup is nice. USB 3.0 nice upgrade form 2.0 red / green battery indicator is nice touch, HDMI outputs, blueray watching on home theater with cable is flawless. solid package all around. very happy

Cons: step 1 - unpackage and charge battery
step 2 - format HDD and delete partitions so i can have 500g instead of 132
step 3 - install win7 x64 and turn off ALL updates
step 4 - find out what the hell components are in this thing
step 5 - find win7 x64 drives
step 6 - reboot and enjoy a outstanding rig

would rather have seen speakers up top near the screen like old HP model. Quick keys for volume, wifi, and a few other were a 1 push solution now i need to find function key and then find correct key for what i want to do ( vol up or down, etc). back panel. dvd drive on left side instead of right like usual. USB spacing could have used more room can't fit corsair jump drives side my side.

does not fit my old 17" lappy backpack...this thing is BIG. 13 x 16.5 x 2

Other Thoughts: get rid of win 8, find the right drivers for 7 and try to get $500 off like i did. it's a little bit of work but you won't be happier

took egg for win 8, very min almost non existent win7 compatible drives on setup CD and all the small quirks mentioned. and the fact my $60 backpack is now useless and i must find bigger...

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop, Poor Quality Assurance

Pros: Great laptop, beautiful screen, very quick.

Cons: The AC adapter was broken when I received the product. Having a broken piece included with the product is poor quality assurance.

Other Thoughts: I was able to use the laptop briefly before I noticed the problem. I'm currently waiting for my RMA, which was done very quickly. I'm hoping they'll actually be able to replace the device for me, because the laptop itself was great.

1 out of 5 eggsLemmon

Pros: It was phenomenal while it worked!

Cons: After 9 months and 16 days this laptop inexplicably turned into a $2,000 paperweight.

Other Thoughts: I have been an IT professional for 6 years now and have always loved and backed ASUS products. I have even recommended them to numerous people when asked my opinion, but this level of quality control is beyond unacceptable.

Now I will wait and see if ASUS customer service is any better, and whether or not ASUS will actually back its warranty claims. More to come later on.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologized for the inconvenience this may have caused you. If you have created a backup copy or image of the system using an external drive, please try running this to resolve any OS or software related issues.
Before running recovery, please try running System Restore in order to revert the system to the last know good configuration.
If the problem persists, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and provide a detailed description of the problem so I can setup a warranty service for the unit if defective hardware were found during the troubleshooting process.

Regards,

Rodel

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate to previous review after playing Rome 2

Pros: Still running strong without a hitch. Stays crazy stable and temperatures are always cool even after hours of gaming. Beautiful screen.

Cons: None outside of what was listed in my previous review.

Other Thoughts: Couldn't figure out how to edit old reviews so here's a new one. Okay, so I'm back after playing Rome 2 for about 5 days and it runs really well, considering the state that the game is currently in, which isn't exactly optimized. The graphic settings defaulted to a mix of Ultra and Extreme with AA and some other eye candy enhancements turned off. My game ran a little slow for my taste at these levels so I turned everything down to a mix of Ultra and Very High. The laptop handled these settings really well and the game looks quite impressive. Now, they just need to fix the AI and I'll be in heaven.

5 out of 5 eggsLegit

Pros: Outperforms my Vishera 8350 8-core w/ Gtx 770 PC.
On sale for 999.99.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Windows 8 is a bit annoying imo. I'm sure it isn't as bad as it seems.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: Fast, quiet and runs cool. Not a gamer, but wanted a laptop that would do any thing that I wanted it to do. Put a SSD and it speeded up a bunch.

Cons: none so far, Windows 8 is a little difficult in getting used to.

3 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: This is a beautiful laptop. Very powerful, plays all games I play with ease on high settings. I thought the sound was pretty good for a laptop. The screen was crisp and could be viewed from the sides pretty well. Brightly lit rooms were not a problem either.

It came with very little bloatware, at least in terms of programs. I don't use the Metro side of Windows 8, so there may be lots of bloaty apps.

Cons: Unfortunately, after 5 days of use the laptop died; I'll get into that in a minute.

While the laptop was working, I went ahead and replaced the 500 GB hard drive with a 240 GB SSD and used a 750 GB for data. I planned to create the recovery DVDs like I have for clients with Windows 7 on ASUS laptops and then recover it onto the SSD. Since there was little bloatware, it would just make my life simplier.

I was dissappointed that ASUS no longer provides the AI Recovery application in Windows 8. It's one thing to not provide a recovery DVD or Windows 8 (no manufacturer does that anymore), but to not give the ability to create them is frustrating to say the least.

So I cloned the stock drive onto the SSD and added the 750 GB drive. I am glad I planned to do it that way, because I was also disappointed to see that ASUS is using Hitachi Hard drives!? Plus the drive was over 1 year old!

After setting the laptop up exactly as I wanted and was confident all my programs installed and worked well, I began the task of transferring data to the laptop. Before doing so, I rebooted the system and it would not come back on.

The laptop powered on, the keyboard lit up and the power button was on, but nothing else happened. No post, nothing. After trying a few things, I contacted ASUS Customer Service. The tech had me unplug the laptop and remove the battery (which I already tried) and he had me hold the power button for 30 seconds before replacing the battery and plugging it in again.

I wasn't sure what that would do, but it didn't help. The tech told me I could return it to NewEgg since I just bought it or I could return it to ASUS for repair.

Other Thoughts: I had been watching the price of this laptop for a few months now hoping it would drop after the G750s came out. When NewEgg put it on sale for $999, I couldn't pass that up (and now it is back up to $1449).

There's no chance I'm going to have a 1 week old laptop that has been repaired. That's just a ticking time bomb. I will return it to NewEgg and get a refund.

I have been buying ASUS laptops for clients for many years and have never had a problem with any of them. I've also been buying ASUS components and Monitors for years for clients and have never had trouble with them.

I know ASUS makes quality products and I will continue to purchase ASUS products. It's just very frustrating to get one that dies after less than a week of ownership, especially after spending many hours setting it up eactly like I wanted.
