2 out of 5 eggsNice specs, bad OS + support

Pros: This machine has great specs, looks good, bluetooth out of the box especially for the price paid ($400).

Cons: Out of the box slow as hell. Took out bunch of stuff in Windows 8 to make it move a little better. Since I wanted this as budget machine didn't want to spend more to downgrade to Win7 as I am sure it would've become a great system. Just before the warranty expired (on the 11th month) the HD took a dive. Spent 2hrs with tech support to warrant a new hard drive. Sent in for repair, received back again with HD problem, running slow. The currently recovered HD failed at system restore, which was attempted since it wasn't taking any Windows updates.
There are no options to create recovery discs for this (HP has its software to do that) and its factory installed recovery failed on a just returned from service machine. I am done with this brand.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I'm glad to know that you like the great specification, the looks and price of the laptop. I apologize that the hardrive failed after 11 months, which is an isolated case. I certainly understand your concern regarding a recovery disks creation. You can create your own backup copy or image of the system using the internal DVD drive. If you need further assistance, please email me at and write down service# 3561268 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

4 out of 5 eggsI got TWO!

Pros: Runs games that most Intel based laptops won't. Great performance for the price.

Cons: As usual the touchpad isn't the greatest, but it is not terrible either. Mostly average.

The amount of Asus branded bloatware is pretty bad. Most of it starts automatically, so the end user has to spend time either uninstalling it, or setting it to not start automatically with Windows.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these for my twin 12 year old boys. They wanted to be able to run Minecraft on them. That isn't a very taxing game, but their netbooks couldn't handle it (duh). It turns out that they will also run Cubeworld (a minecraft knock off that is much more demanding of the GPU). They have also been running several games from Steam on these systems. I have been very impressed with the video subsystem performance of these AMD CPU/GPU combo units. The CPU is plenty fast enough, and the GPU performs very well.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat computer for the money

Pros: I was looking for a computer for my younger brother and stumbled upon this deal. I purchased the manufacture refurbished version of this laptop for only 310 and it looks brand new. I wanted a computer with the processing power of a higher end i3 but couldn't find any at a reasonable price. But the fact that this is an APU means it packs some decent graphics performance (as far as integrated graphics go) which was the selling point

Cons: the construction isnt as great as I thought'd it'd be, but not horrible. The mouse pad requires some getting used to.

3 out of 5 eggsMid range mid price

Pros: This laptop is a decent one for the price. Windows 8 is a very annoying version and doesn't seem suitable for a non touch screen computer but it is fast and the instant on feature is nice

Cons: The construction of this unit is a little weak. The mouse pad isn't centered on the computer and if you use your right hand to work the pad you are constantly hitting the right click button. IT IS SO ANNOYING. Center the pad please. The worst part of this laptop is the customer service from asus. I had a cracked screen that was covered under the one year accidental warrenty and it took them....4 months to repair it properly. First they sent it back to me unrepaired.. then I sent it back and they put a new screen on it... except for an inch long scratch in the screen. By that point I gave up and just accepted the repair. poor poor poor customer service.

4 out of 5 eggsExceeded expectations

Pros: Inexpensive. Decent processing power for its price range. Ergonomic layout. Made Windows 8 very easy to learn as a beginner for that OS.

Cons: Very low screen DPI, which is expected in cheap laptops. Also, HDD failed after only 6 months of use. This stuff happens with hardware, so I'm not docking points since it does not see to be a recurring problem.

Other Thoughts: Judging by the other reviews, I think my hardware failure is an exception rather than the rule. This laptop performed way better than expected while it was operational. Probably won't be too hard to get a new hard drive in it. Would order again from ASUS.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price

Pros: Very good standard sized laptop. The AMD processor can handle everything you throw at it. Runs Solidworks better than most desktops with integrated graphics. Light with good battery life.

This just works with no problems and everything that is advertised is delivered. It always stays cool unless you block the exhaust vent, but even then it goes back to normal within a minute when you let it breath.

Cons: No lighted keyboard and it doesn't feel solid. The entire computer doesn't feel flimsy, but I know it won't stand up to any type of abuse. Trackpad likes to do its own thing sometimes. The 5400rpm hard drive feels very slow.

Other Thoughts: I got this in a hurry after my Alienware M11x died and a budget laptop obviously won't compare to it. It is probably the best laptop for the price. You won't have any hardware problems, but get something a little more solid if you plan to abuse it. An SSD also works wonders.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat machine, at a superb price

Pros: cpu, gpu performance is superb. immediate upgrade to ssd and 16gb ram (dont believe the 8gb limit) and this unit is screamin. windows 8 is great. all negative reviews of win 8 are worthless drivel from lazies. classic shell will answer all your needs. even without it, windows 8 is superior. usb 3, memory speeds at 1600, hdmi, this unit is perfect.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: listen folks, every new version of windows has gone through this process. do a little research. windows 8 is faster, and does its job perfectly.

this laptop is perfect for $379.99, free shipping and no tax

4 out of 5 eggsNice laptop for the money

Pros: Price is great, and laptop is very fast. Doesn't get nearly as hot as my old gen Core Duo laptops. Touchpad is a little wonky, but I hope they'll add a driver option to disable it while you're typing soon.

Cons: HGST hard drive is a slow dog hindering this otherwise great system. Replace with an inexpensive SSD when you wipe Windows 8 off of this thing. I/O flies after that.

Other Thoughts: Windows 8 is just awful on a non-touchscreen device. Wipe and install Windows 7 and/or Linux for a good experience. Battery can get very discharged if it is not used for several weeks. Recharge will not be linear in that case and will take many hours just to show minimal charge. Battery is still good and hasn't gone bad, even though it might seem like it has. Just keep charging it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat computer for price

Pros: -Fast APU
Basically this computer is great because of the efficiency of the A8 APU included. So far it has been able to run almost any game/program I've installed, including battlefield. Albeit with low settings at 1024x600 resolution, still at around 30-35 fps in a 32 player match. Also keep in mind that this is without the added ram that people are saying boosts speed and without using AMD Overdrive (did try it out and it boosts the fps by 5-10 but it also made my system crash one time so I no longer use it). The one game I cant run with ideal performance on low settings (like 7 fps in a heavy battle situation without AMD Overdrive) is Planetside 2, which according to the system requirements you need 4 GB for it to run properly. And while this computer has 4GB you have to consider that some of the ram goes to the video card and so is cut short.
Anyway I am loving this new computer. My previous laptop was a three-year-old Compaq, single-core, 2.1Ghz with 64mb integrated graphics and half the ram and storage. So this is a HUGE jump in processing for me, with the quad core CPU I can have FTB(Minecraft Mod), a game installing, and a download or two running in the background, and with the hdmi plug I can have a second screen for pandora, and firefox. And there is barely any slow down once they are all running.
-lots of ports and USB 3.0
Another great thing about this laptop is all the plug ins included. Especially the hdmi plug in (last laptop didn't have it) and the USB 3.0 slots. USB 3.0 Is AWESOME. Before I got this laptop I copied the 16GB of music on my previous computer to my phone and it took something like 3 hours to copy. When I copied that from to this computer I thought I'd try out these new-fangled USB 3 ports and it took less than 20 minutes to copy the same 16GB!
-Sleek design
I just love how they built this thing, pretty much every surface (except the mouse) is textured and under the front edge it sort of slopes out.
-Stays cool
Like it advertises, the palm rest never gets warm. This laptop seems to be well ventilated because even after heavy gameplay the underside wont heat up either. The only thing is anything by the vent in the back left will get very hot from the vented air.

Cons: -horrid speakers
They sound tinny and the low ends sound horrible especially when you turn it up(I use a speaker system so not a problem)
-USB 3 ports wont let go
It takes a lot of force to put in or take out anything from these ports.
-Screen is a bit wobbly
-Battery dies quickly when playing games (like 2 hours-ish)
-Slow down when opening programs
This is the only time things slow down is if you have a bunch of stuff running and you open another program (probably has to do with the 5400rpm hard disc.

Other Thoughts: Just a great deal. If you cant justify spending more than $400 for a computer but want a laptop with mediocre to lower end graphics.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty decent

Pros: Quad Core APU. Highly up-gradable. Fantastic Linux machine. Runs Mint Nadia Cinnamon like a boss. First thing I did was pop it open and swap out the HD for a spare 32gig adata SSD I had from an older machine. Killing secure boot took a min to figure out but its pretty "wow-im-an-idiot" once you figure it out. Tossed in a spare 4 gig sodimm I had laying around while I wait for my 16gig kit to arrive. Get about 4 hours of battery life out of it doing just the typical surfing/ office work and about 2 hours maxed out running mprime (prime 95). The touchpad isn't half-bad as long as your kernel version isn't 5 years old. Getting about 2.5-3 MB/s (yes, that's a big B) download speeds (Tested with Deluge) from the wifi and that was through a proxy. All in all I'm quite surprised by this little machine. Even runs most of my steam games pretty well. Cold start to checking my gmail in 22 seconds counting the time it takes me to log in and would be faster if fast boot was doable w/ CMI. Resumes almost immediately and multitasking barely even puts a dent in the performance. I have a habit of not closing windows when I'm done with them because I figure I'll use them again. Even though I've been using SSD's now and the slowness of the HDDs is pretty much nullified, its still a habit. Nothing felt better than having 2 chrome windows open w/ no less than 7 tabs each plus various other things open across 4 different work spaces. I went to expose and realized how much stuff I had going on and was incredibly impressed. I couldn't even tell.

Cons: Windows 8 / Secure boot is 1 of the most masochistic experiences ever. Getting used to it wouldn't be hard and I can see how it is even better in some ways but the annoyance of it is enough to put a bad taste in 1's mouth. Touchpad can be a touch flaky @ times but its more than likely just about getting used to it. I wonder how much this laptop would cost without a pre-loaded operating system. If dual-booting were less of a pain then I might would have tried to however the path of least resistance works well enough.

Other Thoughts: All in all I'm quite satisfied with this little laptop. Needed something temporary to tide me over on the mobile front. Desktop is plenty powerful as it is and haswell is right around the corner. If I'm honest though, I may not pick up another one if the 16gig kit makes as big a difference as I figure it could. I might even pick up a crucial m500 and do a proper dual-boot if I feel the need to self-flagellate or whatever. Either way, when I decide to sell this badboy a year or 2 from now, whoever gets it will have plenty of machine to handle whatever they want to throw @ it. Very pleased.
