1 out of 5 eggsBios Locked Wont Boot - Asus wants $130

Pros: I like it and used it 10 times.

Cons: Tried to update Bios and now the bios is locked and computer wont boot to anything but bios. Cant update the bios either. Cant Boot from DVD or USB.

Other Thoughts: Just think there has to be a way to unlock the bios to install previous versions to unbrick the laptop. bought it 1/28/2014 and already no good.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Hermio,

It's great to know that you are liking the laptop. I apologize if the BIOS was locked and there's no way to unlock this except to send it in for service. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3558944 on the subject line.

1 out of 5 eggsNo good buy

Pros: It's not too slow for the money

Cons: At least this was NEVER a good buy for myself. The audio headphone jack is broken, and I reinstalled Windows 7 only to find that neither NewEgg nor Asus provides the drivers for Windows 7. Their customer services were just not helpful at all. Computer is slow for the money, and I just don't like this computer at all.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. The laptop was only released in the market with WINDOWS 8. We don't provide drivers or support for WINDOWS installation. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3537875 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop, but ASUS is headache to deal with

Pros: Great price. Great size and speed. I love the laptop, but...

Cons: It would randomly shut off every now and then. I was talking to my buddy who has the exact same laptop (he bought his brand new from the electronics store) and he has been experiencing the same exact problem with his. So WARNING!!!
It would be fine if they took care of their mistakes, but ASUS is a headache to deal with. I called them to utilize my "90 repair warranty" and they said that my warranty expired on March 3rd (about 30 days after I bought it) so I have to jump through all these hoops to send them PROOF that I bought it not long ago and it is still under warranty and they are super slow with responding to me. Heaven knows that once I get it to them, they won't charge me for the service or make me pay for shipping costs or any other stuff they think up.

Other Thoughts: If you don't want a headache, don't buy this computer. That is the conclusion that I came up with.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product because of the great price, size and speed. I certainly understand your concern about the random shutdown related issue. In order to improve system stability and performance, it is recommended to install all recommended WINDOWS Update and upgrade to WINDOWS 8.1. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3537915 on the subject line.

1 out of 5 eggsKeeps Crashing

Pros: Screen has good viewing angles

Cons: This laptop is giving me a huge headache because it crashes randomly. Sometimes it's just the shockwave player (such as Candy Crush in Facebook in Chrome). Sometimes Google Chrome will crash. Sometimes the computer (hardware?) will crash, saying it had something to do with the kernel and/or memory management.

I have only installed Google Chrome, Microsoft Silverlight (to run netflix), Oracle JDK 7, Eclipse, and now C Free 4.0 Standard. I had an adblock extension for Chrome, but I turned it off because I suspected it was the source of crashes (it's not). And I updated to Windows 8.1

What is going on? I was actually getting the Google Chrome crashes about 3 days after I received the laptop, when it was the only thing installed on my computer. I would have multiple tabs open and maybe a video and then it would crash. This is simply unacceptable. I thought refurbished meant it would still work like new.

And the touchpad is annoying. It often fails to recognize movement or a tap.

Other Thoughts: I've owned this laptop for 6 days and I'm already fed up with the amount of times it has crashed.

4 out of 5 eggsFirst Impressions

Pros: Feels sturdy for a small laptop
Good screen viewing angles (matte screen finish)
Nice touchpad features (use 2 fingers anywhere on pad to scroll screen, 3 fingers swipe down to go to desktop, 3 fingers swipe up to switch between programs)
Keyboard feels good and backlight is a nice feature
Even though it's refurbished you couldn't tell. Sure it's a little dusty and has fingerprints and a couple of light scratches (that could have been made with a plastic fork) to the bottom of the laptop, but it looks brand new.
Also my laptop luckily has no dead pixels unlike my old "new" laptop also purchased on newegg. Again, luck of the draw.

Cons: *Biggest issue is the touchpad sometimes does not recognize a single tap or quick motion. Happens often enough to be pretty annoying. For example, I'll quickly try to 'X' out of a program but it won't do it or I'll click once and drag, but the cursor won't move from the place where I clicked. I made sure the touchpad drivers were up-to-date (they are). Not sure what else I can do unless there's a sensitivity setting somewhere.

Laptop makes intermittent noise, kind of like switching the channels on a tv that is only showing static, but at a pretty low volume (this is happening while I only have chrome running this review page). Not sure if it's the hard drive or the fan.

Other Thoughts: Just got this laptop an hour ago. Have not put the power of the processor to the test yet. I'm going to just trust that it's powerful enough for me to run things like a C++ compiler, Adobe Reader, MS Word, MS Excel, Google Chrome pages and videos all at the same time.

5 out of 5 eggsSome minor Hiccups But turned out Great!

Pros: -Lots of Ram
-Top 20 laptop processors at time of purchase
-Plenty of Hard Drive space
-BACKLIT KEYBOARD!! WOO
-All Aluminum case, pretty sturdy despite how small it is
- Not very much bloatware due to Windows 8 being OEM

Cons: Had some headaches with the mouse pad. It is slightly too large for how small the laptop is, and has a TON of features that are annoying rather than helpful.
Also, Windows 8 took some getting used to. Some modifications and windows 8.1 upgrade really helped.

Other Thoughts: For those people giving this poor reviews because they couldn't get windows to boot and received and error along the lines of "windows could not repair/ fix the problem" when trying to repair feature, all you need to do is call windows and get another copy of windows, then put that into your CD-drive. Boot from the disc, reload windows onto your HDD. The error is from that copy of windows not wanting to recognize the mobo, and may be caused by any repairs/refurbishment that was done on Asus' end.

If you knew anything about computers or how to google things, you could have figured out the answer, fixed your new laptop for not much money, then enjoyed your sweet deal you picked up on newegg.

The most common cause of all low-egg reviews and computer errors is that thing seated between whatever You are sitting on and your computer screen.

Thanks for the sweet deal newegg! You guys are awesome!

3 out of 5 eggsBacklit keyboard

Pros: Fast, lots of ram. Good build quality. No dents or scratches.

Cons: Backlight doesn't work on my keyboard. I have tried everything... uninstalled/ installed ATK drivers from ASUS, read every forum I could find. I think it is hardware.. possibly connected wrong.

Windows 8 OEM was upgraded to 8.1 for free but then it wanted to activate. Couldn't activate because we don't get a key... it is supposedly tied into the BIOS but then why does it need to activate? Windows said ASUS put a questionable copy of Win8 on the machine. Fortunately windows tech support gave me a new key.

Other Thoughts: Newegg... why send out a laptop with a bad keyboard? Windows part is par for the course but don't these things get tested? I'd send back if I wasn't afraid to get one with different problems. I think I'll consider myself lucky that everything else works.

Why did my last review not get posted?

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy this!

Pros: Don't know, was not able to use it.

Cons: Worked for ten minutes then died, not even able to turn it on... Diagnosed for an hour then said "was not able to fix your PC". Nothing I could do, it gave me only the choice to turn off. Every time I tried to go to advanced options it started spinning that wheel for an hour then went back to my only choice, shutdown.

Other Thoughts: Usually love newegg, don't get it... I guess that's what you get for buying refurbished but I had lots of luck before with refurbished Macs... Don't understand. Oh well, hope you have better luck.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective on arrival

Pros: Looks nice other than a big ding on the back right corner

Cons: Screen flashes on and off repeatedly. Now I have to pay to ship it back and wait for a week to get there, before they ship me another one.
I hope the next one works. "fingers crossed"

Other Thoughts: Why doesn't someone check to see if an item works before calling it refurbished!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for the positive review. I do understand your concern regarding the video flickering issue on the laptop. The video flickering is possibly related to video driver updating locally in the System Registry if the system is being setup for the first time. It is normal for the video doing a refresh during this process. If I can be of further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3184091 on the subject line.
