2 out of 5 eggsGood Price Bad Computer

Pros: The price for what specs this laptop has is very good

Cons: this laptop gave me trouble earlier this year, the display screen stopped working and this was supposed to be a new laptop but my gut is telling me it was refurbished and its still giving me problems now.

I have sent it in to asus for repair since there was no warranty from newegg for a new laptop replacement at the moment (i don't even think there was any at all!!) and i have to send it in again for the same problem. I'm hoping to get in contact with newegg today to see if i can work something out.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. All ASUS products undergo intensive qualitycontrol testing and inspections, this is an isolated case. ASUS provides warranty for the laptop in order to fix or repair any isolated factory escape defect only, replacement is not covered or provided. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N140905597 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

Regards,

Rodel

3 out of 5 eggsUpdate to earlier review

Pros: All of the pros from my previous review still apply

Cons: Same here, up to and including the fact that after hours of dinking around with that useless Win8 OS, I finally wiped and did a clean install of Win7, which seemed to have cleared up all of my issues except the one below.

Now for the new "con" in the list. The Atheros wireless adapter is absolute freaking garbage. If you are more than 5 feet from a WAP, you cannot stay connected. My card has d/ced three times while writing this addendum to my review (and I'm sitting in a room watching Netflix on my desktop rig, and it has 5 bars and streaming without lag; laptop only has 2 bars). As may be inferred, I did my research and installed appropriate drivers for my OS, but still no dice. Still a great laptop, really responsive, played TEOS Beta just fine (sitting 5' from the WAP the whole time) and does all of my accounting coursework with ease. Just that pesky piece of junk wireless adapter that sours the relationship a bit.

Other Thoughts: I'd still go for it as long as you intend to use it close to your WAP, or have a thoroughly pervasive wireless infrastructure like a school or such, or hard wire it to your router...oh...looky there, d/ced again before completing the review update. The warning is complete.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Anthony,

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product. I certainly understand your concern regarding the weak WIFI connection. Since you have installed WINDOWS 7, please make sure you have the most current WLAN driver and wireless utility software installed. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3544177 on the subject line.

Regards,

Rodel

5 out of 5 eggsAsus K55N 15.6" Laptop

Pros: - Low price
- Asus reliability
- Low weight

Overall a great laptop for the price, it does everything I need it to do for school, and doesn't weigh a ton. Great features for the price. I have played a couple of video games on it, and I haven't been blown away, but I do most of my gaming on my desktop rig anyway.

Cons: - Battery life
- Windows 8
- Construction
- Trackpad

The battery life isn't great, regardless of the power settings used. Windows 8 is not a great OS in my opinion, and the tiles thing is more of a distraction than it is a useful tool. Now you have the ability to "update" to 8.1 and get a sort of Start button, or you can download a shell overlay to get one. Just do a search for it. The trackpad is easily the worst design and function I have ever seen in my life. Do yourself a favor and just buy a mouse.

Other Thoughts: The construction of the laptop is a little flimsy, and the keyboard flexes upward a little bit in the middle. But the keyboard has a good feel to it and it is easy to type with it. I have only ever used Asus motherboards in my desktop builds, and this laptop has been just as reliable.

5 out of 5 eggsA great buy

Pros: I like the track pad, perfect size and accuracy
Good keyboard
Stays cool to the touch where your hands go
Above average battery life
For the price, HDD, RAM, and graphics are excellent
Runs Minecraft on far distance with all graphics settings to fancy without optifine @ 50fps without any trouble, I'd say that's impressive for the price...

Cons: The processor speed bottlenecks gaming performance, but not enough for it to be an issue on older/simpler games. I'm assuming your not buying this laptop to play Arkham Asylum

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my girlfriend to play SIMS, watch movies, and do schoolwork. It does all these things great with no overheating, comfort, or any other issues. Windows 8 takes some getting used to, but my gf just uses "desktop mode" anyway. Windows 8 is annoying at first but its actually starting to grow on me...

5 out of 5 eggsgreat deal at $379.99

Pros: this is a great price for this unit. i have the lesser of this model: smallerr hdd, and less ram. and paid the same $379.99. so this is a steal.

Cons: none, once you get the track pad and keyboard sorted out

Other Thoughts: tyler below said it has 2gb graphics card, and it does NOT . it is shared video memory. so you can share up to 2gb of system ram with the gpu portion of this apu. this is NOT dedicated graphics with its own 2gb of video of memory. i upgraded this to an ssd(cloned it over) and 16gb of ram. i then shared 512mb with the gpu for graphics. i do very light gaming.

5 out of 5 eggsPure Excellence

Pros: Good Hard drive storage, decent RAM, comfortable keyboard, built-in web cam and mic, USB 3.0 ports, EVERYTHING!

It comes with a few neat built-in Apps that just makes things cool. You can switch between using a plugged in mouse and the trackpad to quickly navigate the apps you have running. The mic and web cam both work great. I am able to sit comfortably back at my best position, and both the cam and mic picked me up clearly in Skype. Quick load ups of practically everything. The actual start up can't be longer than 10-12 seconds, if that. Opening programs along with apps and using both at the same time is a breeze. There are many unique features that just make this laptop very user-friendly.

I caught it on a sort of double sale and got this laptop for under $400, but it is totally worth the $500 price tag, and really more than that.

Cons: The only flaw is the processor. Coming in at only 1.90Ghz, you can sometimes notice it, but with the 6 gigs of RAM and the 2 gig graphics card, it more than makes up for it.

Web cam goes only to a max of 0.9MP

I had a problem with the shipping. I paid extra for 2-3 day shipping, but during the process they changed it to saying 3-day only. I called Newegg and although they could do nothing to speed up my order by one day, they refunded my $2.99 plus an extra $7.01, totaling a $10 refund, so it all worked out fairly well actually.

Other Thoughts: Post people say (including me beforehand) complain constantly about Windows 8, BUT I have actually grown to like it better than 7. You can still use you're desktop screen just like all other versions of windows, and if you look up a Windows 8 tutorial on youtube, you should find at least one that will get you completely familiar with the basics of it within a 30 minute video.

The design of the laptop as far as hardware goes is nothing to complain about. The ports could have been placed in better locations, but it's quite easy to readjust your setup to accommodate the differences. It's quite sleek and thin in my own opinion, and not really heavy at all. (7-9lbs maybe?) Wish it came in a solid black or black on red combo, but the color is only perfunctory.

Final Thoughts:
For a normal, all-around laptop user, (schoolwork, gaming, browsing, app-loving, downloading, etc.), This couldn't be a more perfect computer. It quickly loads all Microsoft Office 2013 programs, and it's a breeze to go through all the ins and outs of those programs. Every game I've tried to play so far, (League of Legends, APB: Reloaded, DayZ), it has ran them at no less than medium settings with no lag at all. I haven't tried to up it anymore than that because I'm comfortable with sacrificing super extreme graphics for no lag and still great gameplay. I know this isn't really an 'economy' laptop at $500, but if you catch it on sale or have a promo code to get it reduced in price, I wouldn't hesitate to jump on it. ASUS has their ducks in a row nowadays, and has just become my favorite brand of laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsOverall, It's GREAT.!

Pros: THe pros are:
great comfortable keyboard,
6gb of ram and quad core processor,
decent battery life,
thinner than i thought it would be,
screen can get the job done.

Cons: WINDOWS 8.
it has some type of UEFI secure boot downloaded with it, preventing you from dualbooting. what a gimmick.
i completely wiped windows 8, replaced it with win7 pro, which allowed me to dualboot with ubuntu. my advice to anyone looking to dualboot: be aware you have to wipe the hdd in order to achieve it....

Other Thoughts: Windows 8 is my only complaint. it took me and my IT guy like 6 hours to be able to dual boot with win7 and ubuntu, a huge waste f time. so ya, windows 8 "start screen" ??? ....or whatever they call it, is completely laughable. i have no idea why windows 8 is desirable to ANYONE on this planet. it is complete garbage. the reason i KNOW THEY (microsoft) know that win 8 belongs in the trash is because there secure boot, UEFI and partitions settings completely and utterly block you from doing so. THAT BEING SAID, i LOVE this little thing, i bought it on sale for 400 bucks and i dont regret it whatsoever. i was used to usigng an ectremely outdated hp desktop from like 2009 that is awfully slow compared to the K55N.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Buy

Pros: Good amount of memory.
Spacious hard drive.
A8-4500m (great processor with integrated graphics capable of playing my beloved dark souls!)
Doesn't get too hot and is relatively light.

Cons: Windows 8 is new to me, though not really a con I DID have to sit down and figure out how everything differed from W7.

Windows 8 is what you make of it, if someone were to make a bad review just because of windows 8 *cough cough*, then I wouldn't listen to them.

Most people jumped on the hate train for Windows 8 because it's NEW and doesn't have full support yet. Yes it runs "apps" but apps are considered programs too (for the dummy reviewer who said otherwise).

The lack of a start button is a turn off for some, though if you hover your mouse in the same area as the start menu is on other OS and click, it takes you to the start screen so no big deal.

TL;DR : Don't rate a product bad because of a third party feature.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop for the price

Pros: Good deal - I got the lap top for $400, but even at $500, I think this lap top is a good deal for the hardware that comes with it. Decent quad core processor and 6GB RAM is enough to run what I need (for things like 3D rendering, I use my desktop).

Asus - In my opinion, it's a reliable company to buy from, and they actually give a few useful and interesting programs without a ton of excessive and useless programs you might get on like an HP

Touch Pad - The touch pad is very responsive and sensitive to the touch (which I guess can be a bad thing at times). The bottom half of the touch pad can click like a mouse, with both right and left clicks. There are several touch pad short cuts which help.

Cons: Average Build Quality - The lap top is made from different plastics, and it is not the best quality build that I have seen. The keyboard flexes a little, which hasn't posed a problem yet, but it makes me much more cautious. It is very easy to see finger prints, on both the screen, and the rest of the lap top.

Weight - While it isn't very heavy, with Macbooks and Ultrabooks going around, it is relatively heavy for its size. If you were making a one hand pass to a friend, he could easily drop it, not expecting the weight (already happened).

Other Thoughts: Perfect laptop for me, as I am starting my fall semester at Carnegie Mellon University. It doesn't need to be super fancy, because I have a good desktop. I just need the portability and accessibility really.

Most people are saying Windows 8 is the biggest con about the laptop. In most cases, they are correct. I'm probably going to get rid of it for Ubuntu. Don't let the Windows 8 scare you away from the lap top. It is still a good deal, and there are many redeeming qualities about the operating system. It is indeed cleaner, and easy to use after you get familiar with it. Don't be a cyber conservative and complain about the OS and not bother to learn how to use it.

3 out of 5 eggsNo Windows 8 Please

Pros: Asus

Cons: Windows 8 I like how they talk about that you can run "apps" with it. Apps are for phones, not computers, programs are for computers. I'd buy this at the $399 sale price today if I wouldn't need to shell out another $139 for Windows 7 professional. Kinda takes the bargain out of the bargain. I bought a gateway last month with Win 8 thinking I was buying a computer with an operating system for a computer not knowing I was getting something that allows a computer to run "APPS" I wasted a day trying to figure it out, its not intuitive like any of the previous versions of windows building on it its just sheet for smartphone users putting on their bigboy pants stepping up to a real computer...

Other Thoughts: If there was a free upgrade to Win 7 I would get this and yes I said upgrade, because win 7 would be an upgrade.
