5 out of 5 eggsNice little box at a good price

Pros: Light, decent keyboard, workable installation, and enough umph to drive a 1080 video stream as a Mythtv frontend. Just bought a second one.

Cons: Not much, maybe the need to crack the box to install an SSD. ;)

4 out of 5 eggsDelightfully adequate, small and light.

Pros: Price.
Small form factor.
Ubuntu Linux OS.
Large trackpad.

Cons: 2Gb memory not up-gradable.
Small non-removable battery.
Very difficult HDD upgrade.
Short battery life.
No Bluetooth.

Other Thoughts: Let me start by saying that all of my Pros/Cons are relative to the $225 price point I paid for this little thing. The 1st thing I did when I got the X200CA was to replace the slow 320Gb HDD with a 250Gb SDD, this I think is a necessary upgrade considering the low non-upgradable 2Gb of RAM. Linux Ubuntu OS is a full featured operating system that runs really well on systems with meager resources... Installing Win7 on these laptops though easily possible and workable will most definitely yield "netbook like" performance so be forewarned... The dual core Celron 1007U is based on the Ivy Bridge architecture so it's surprisingly capable. The 11.6" 1366x768 looks quite good and it's bright enough(again price relative) with somewhat narrow viewing angles. Some have complained about the trackpad, configured for tap to click, 2 finger tap, 2 finger scroll in Ubuntu it works perfectly(better than my $1500 Sony Vaio S15) so I wonder if those that complain are using Windows... The keyboard is comfortable and large enough to work with. USB 3 and SD card reader are nice to have BUT no Bluetooth(had to get a small USB Bluetooth from Newegg for ~$15).
For my intended purpose of using this while outside the house this has proven to be quite a surprisingly capable little wonder AND I have grown quite fond of Ubuntu OS and Linux. I am finding myself using it even while at home and I enjoy tinkering with open source software and have gotten to be pretty comfortable with the Terminal and the command line(not that dissimilar from the old DOS days, who remembers those?)...
BTW... If you don't like using the command line you never have to use it under Ubuntu as the UI is quite good and all encompassing...

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed...

Pros: Quality construction.

Cons: Slow as molasses. Internet surfing is near impossible if you want multiple tabs open. As I had only 2 tabs open it was still painfully slow.

Other Thoughts: Asus has always been known for their quality and performance. Although this one disappointed me I will exchange it for another Asus. We have 4 other Asus laptops in our home and have always been happy.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: Very cheap
Speakers are nice and loud
Screen is decent(not the best)
webcam quality is good
mic quality is decent

Cons: Mouse buttons are part of the touch pad. difficult to right click without moving pointer.

1080p youtube video lags a little, not a problem since the screen is lower than 1080p. Was not expecting 1080p for this price.

Other Thoughts: Replaced Ubuntu with Mint 15, like it better.

3 out of 5 eggsMostly Good

Pros: Nice screen and keyboard. I like Ubuntu and LibreOffice. Does everything it needs to do. Size is good and overall it feels like it is good quality. Wifi has been good so far.

Cons: Trackpad sucks. It is really, really bad. Feels awful and is very loud. It clicks too hard and the sensitivity on the tracker is off. Just terrible. Feels like they designed the whole laptop with care and precision, then just threw in the cheapest, crappiest trackpad they could find.

The box appears to have been opened. The ASUS sticker/seal had been taped back on and there was some dust/debris around the corners of the screen. The papers were a bit wrinkled like someone had flicked through them. No scratches, fingerprints, or other signs of ware. It booted fine and Ubuntu installed as new, but I was a bit miffed that it had been opened (possibly a return?). It was a gift and did not want to go through the hassle of returning it.

Other Thoughts: Purchased for my wife as a replacement word processing laptop (replacing an old MacBook). It seems to meet her needs - keyboard is nice and the screen is the perfect size. Very portable.

The mouse is really just terrible. Could use an external mouse, but she likes to use it in bed and its really not practical to connect a mouse.

Note: Netflix will not work initially. Just google for the solution.

4 out of 5 eggsBIOS error but resolved by tech support

Pros: Light, Really attractive looking design, 64 bit processor, enough hard drive space, HDMI, UNIX

As a CS major I really needed an affordable computer that ran a UNIX based operating system (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in this case) because Windows did not have the tools I needed.

Cons: BIOS error, speed is ok, touchpad/keys are also ok.

The first thing that happened when I booted up was a frozen purple screen. I wasn't sure if it was a software problem or a hardware problem and I didn't want to void my warranty by messing around in case it needed replacing, so I called tech support which resolved it right away. Kind of disappointing that it didn't work right out of the box.

Other Thoughts: If you run into the same problem I did where it would not boot up Ubuntu, nor the ubuntu recovery, nor anything off of a USB stick, it might be a BIOS error. ASUS tech support helped a lot. They instructed me to go into bios and reset the defaults (I don't remember the exact process) which immediately fixed the problem.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter Than I expected

Pros: Price
Looks good on the outside and in
Battery is ok at about 2 and a half hours
Good screen with good resolution

Cons: Touch pad feels really cheap
The clicks go down way too far

Other Thoughts: So I bought this laptop just because I really needed a laptop that I could take to class and type up notes on. My main gaming rig has to stay at home for obvious reasons. At first glance, this thing looks pretty cool. The "carbon fiber" paint does add some detail and rigidity to it. The keyboard is about as average as it gets. Nothing good, nothing bad, and it's pretty quiet. The touchpad is quite horrible though. It's large but just feels very cheap and lose. The screen itself isn't bad at all, in fact it surprises me at how good this is for the price. It's resolution is 1336x768 (shame on you NewEgg for not mentioning that). The body itself is a fingerprint magnet though and I have to constantly be wiping it down with a cloth.

The first thing I did when I received the notebook was install windows 7 on it. I think part of the reason it's so cheap is because it doesn't come with windows which saves the manufacture money on not having to licence it. To my surprise this computer actually has pretty decent performance. Something I'd expect from a $400-$500 laptop. For those who want to know, the windows experience index rates this computer:
CPU: 5.4
RAM: 4.5
Graphics 4.3
Gaming Graphics: 6.1
Hard Drive 5.9

Let's see, some other things you might want to know...
CPU idles at 50C, which is just too high
Fans are quiet at idle, very quiet (fan, I should say)
CPU doesn't exceed 80C under stress test
Speakers are also very decent, after working in a studio, everything other than my studio monitors sounds like garbage but these little speakers aren't bad

Oh and this thing can play counter strike source on high settings and max resolution which is also quite impressive.

If you're looking for something to just use to type up documents and web browse, why spend more money on another laptop that this one does just fine. Yeah you can't upgrade it, but microsoft has about reached the limit in terms of how much resources the operating system needs to run, so as future versions of windows are released, they won't slow the performance of this computer. (Though I always recommend using windows 7 64bit as windows 8 is a joke for people who have a hard time understanding what a computer is or for children that want pretty animations. 7 is the real workers OS)

4 out of 5 eggsVery Nice

Pros: This little baby has a USB 3.0 outlet, Large HD thats not fully used. The Ubuntu OS is supprisingly fast and works quite smooth. HDMI also a supprise. The computer is very light weight.

Cons: Biggest Con-RAM can not be upgraded.
Keyboard a little clunky. Small battery 2 hrs 10 min's on normal settings. 2.5 hours on low setting but hey, it was $200. Wireless a little weak but may be a driver update issue.

Other Thoughts: Very Happy with the Purchase. Bought 2, His & Hers

4 out of 5 eggsNice System

Pros: Small and cheap. Worked fine for me out of the box, no issues or problems yet. I mostly use it for accessing the internet to watch videos, browse web pages, do emails, upload pictures to social media, works great for all that.

Cons: The touchpad mouse is a bit touchy...but if you adjust it down and or just use an external mouse, you'll be fine.

Other Thoughts: For the price, this is a very nice system. I'm using it now. Time will tell how well it holds up.
