4 out of 5 eggsCan be upgraded to SSD

Pros: Dual core i3 for less than $300. Yes, please. In under 30 minutes, I was able to remove the included Toshiba 500GB hard drive and place a Kingston 240GB SSD.

The bios isn't exactly configured to allow SSD, but you can force it to acknowledge the replacement drive through disabling the BIOS fast-start (thus allowing the ASUS logo, etc)

-SSD compatible (Kingston brand) 240GB
-League of Legends runs fine. ~40FPS
-It's not b.u.t.t. ugly.

Cons: If you're looking at it from a standpoint of just a step up from a chromebook you'll be fine. BUT: you won't be able to do processor intensive tasks.

-Very few games will run on this machine.
-Constantly hitting (out of memory) issues with Photoshop, large file manipulation (winrar), MS office.
-

Might want to increase swap file size at the expense of lowering life span on SSD.

Other Thoughts: You pretty much get what you pay for. Good contender in the netbook / travel notebook / chromebook killer category.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's good to know that you were able to successfully upgraded the hardrive to a SSD. Doing a hardware upgrade void warranty coverage, please do this at your own risk. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3773698 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

1 out of 5 eggsRAM not upgradeable

Pros: Small, thin and light

Cons: RAM is soldered to motherboard, no extra slot to add more RAM. You will need to open the laptop to change the HDD or the Battery if ever needed.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for the positive comment. I certainly understand your concern regarding RAM upgrade limitation and no easy access to the internal parts of the laptop. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3676346 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Laptop

Pros: Fast i3 processor - dual core hyper-threaded yielding a quad logical core processor.
Beautiful design
Excellent build quality
Overall very fast and responsive

Cons: Cannot change the HDD (not docking eggs for this though. It didn't stop the laptop from working perfectly).

Other Thoughts: I purchased this knowing that there is no removable battery (to remove it, you must take the keyboard off), although other people reviewed this negatively because of the non-removable battery. They did not specify if they were sold a computer with a dead battery, though one person proposed a hypothetical situation where one was dead I believe. Mine was not, it worked perfectly (about 4.5hours at 75% charge).

The issue I came across was after I stress tested this laptop and ensured everything was working perfectly (everything was), I took the screws out of the bottom of the laptop, removed the keyboard carefully and went to replace the 500GB 5400 RPM HDD with an SSD I recently purchased from NewEgg. After I finished hooking it up, I tried to boot the computer, and could only access the bios. I could not change boot order or anything.

<Long story short>

After contacting ASUS tech support, I found out that this model laptop is designed to use only the HDD that comes with it - it will NOT work with another HDD or SSD, nor are there Windows 7 drivers available for this (I was going to install 7 instead of migrating 8). This was not shown on the ASUS website for this specific laptop, not was it indicated on NewEgg. Perhaps it was my fault for not looking into it enough, oh well.

NewEgg was super cool with my return for a full refund (save the rush shipping I paid), and even waved the restocking fee.

All-in-all, if you need a great laptop with decent graphics and good battery life, and you do not plan on upgrading the RAM (which would entail removing the motherboard in it's entirety), then you would be hard pressed to find a better laptop in this price range.

Just buy it already!

1 out of 5 eggsDisapp

Pros: so so

Cons: I unfortunately didnt read the two reviews on the device before purchasing. It has a built in battery so if you have a defective battery, you are pretty much done. I tried RMA'ing but I have to go through Asus. I have used Aus products for years especially their motherboard.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for your disappointment not to be able to replace the battery when it's dead without voiding the warranty. You can still replace it at your own risk if you don't mind voiding warranty coverage for the product. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3573372 on the subject line.

2 out of 5 eggsWay to much for these.

Pros: i3, 500 gig HDD, comes with 4gigs of RAM

Cons: Non-removable battery. Would require complete disassembly to replace the hard drive.

Other Thoughts: Never would have ordered these if they had stated the battery is not removable.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for the dissatisfaction with the design of the laptop. With this design, we did make the decision to have the battery a non-removable one. However, rest assured, if you ever did need a battery replacement – it is covered under warranty. It should not cost you a dime if your battery was to become defective while it’s within the warranty policy. You will find that many models are following this trend in design; but again, rest assured you are covered. If you have any other questions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me at cl-tien@asus.com. I’ll be happy to answer any other questions that you might have.

Best Regards,

Tien
