Does it have a built in microphone?

Yes.  A very sensitive microphone.

Only thing I've noticed negative is the touch screen doesn't work occasionally.  Had to use system restore to get it to work.

Does this laptop have a DVD player?

No, but it has an SD card slot and three USB ports. It seems like in this case Asus is following the modern trend toward solid state memory (e.g., flash drives, SD cards) and online file management. I've heard, too, that an optical drive (i.e., CD/DVD player) can compromise structural integrity. This model, for one, is soundly built.

specs say VGA but I don't see a VGA port on the machine. VGA - yes or no? Thanks.

There is no VGA port (and no DVI port ), only an HDMI port on the side.

Does this have an extra bay where I could put an SSD without getting rid of the HDD?

Mine did have an mSATA slot along side the SATA slot. You would have to get a half-size mSATA though or risk having the mSATA lay against a fan.

The downside is there is no way to tell without having the laptop if there is the mSATA. Only way to tell is if it has an Intel WiDi adapter, it doesn't have the mSATA. If it has the other (Aetheros I believe?) then it SHOULD have the mSATA.

I am not surr but the laptop looks brand new not a fingerprint on it all the protective plastic works great I spoke with somebody at newegg And got no reslove if you find out let me know but to me it means the b for best laptop

Any idea what speed of SSD to get in order to replace the HDD that it comes with? Is there any reason to get a high end SSD (6 gbps) or should I stick with a mid-grade one?

My understanding is that a "b grade" laptop is one with some minor cosmetic flaws.... small scratch, dent, etc.  But the operating portion is fine and the warranty is usually the same as for a "grade a" product.

The price for a Grade B product should be lower than a Grade A product.

Question 9

I cannot get the backlit keyboard to light up.  Pressing fn f3/f4 is out of the question because they don't seem to work as expected.  Is there software that I would have to download or can someone walk me through this process to fix it if they have encountered it before?  This is still a great laptop, but I was expecting it to also have a light up keyboard as advertised and is also in the specs.

Sorry to hear about that. I bought near 10 laptops like this one, and none of them has that issue with the backlit keyboard.
