4 out of 5 eggsGreat Power for Great Price

Pros: - Core i7 is always fantastic!

- The GTX 860M has so far performed outstandingly. To give a benchmark, I was able to run Dark Souls 2 at 1080p and maximum graphics settings and everything ran flawlessly at 60FPS.

- Plenty of RAM for all your hungry programs!

- The cooling on this laptop is fantastic, as ASUS has always been great as far as their cooling solutions with the G-series. The laptops run very cool and fans run VERY quiet. Most of the time, I can only hear a very soft blowing noise coming from the back of the laptop, and often when just browsing, I can't hear it at all! The HDD often makes more noise than the fan does (but still very quiet and no noticeable vibration from the HDD)!

- Onboard audio sounds fantastic, and it can get LOUD! I can hardly turn the system volume past 50% without it getting crazy loud! (IMPORTANT: Please read the Con note about this audio) Speakers sound better than average, but they are still laptop speakers, so don't expect something life-changing.

- The screen is a very nice matte 1080p TN display. So far, no screen artifacts or imperfections. There may or may not be very slight backlight bleed on the edges, but it may just be my contrast/gamma settings.

- The keyboard and trackpad are very nice as well. The keyboard is the normal backlit chiclet style keys, and they all have a very nice bounce and clicky response, with no noticeable flex in the keyboard itself at all. The trackpad is also nice in that it is very large, but very smooth and responsive, with individual left and right click buttons. Some say the size of the trackpad gets in the way and causes misclicks, but I haven't seen that happening with my hands usual placement on WASD or QWER. But you can easily disable the trackpad is you wish by a simple function key shortcut. No missed keystrokes so far!

- Surprisingly thin and light for its size, especially compared to the earlier generation of G-series laptops (Still hefty though). This one is overall thinner and lighter than my old G53SW, and that was only a 15.6"! Another pleasant surprise is that the laptop is only around a little over an inch thick throughout most of the body of the laptop, only getting thicker where the battery is. The 2.0" height listed in the specifications is only because the rear of the laptop sits that high due to the footpegs holding it up for ventilation.

Cons: - Windows 8. This is a con for many people, but for me, after tweaking everything to be able to navigate mostly from the desktop, it is not bad at all.

- The 5400RPM HDD may trouble those who are used to faster drives/SSD's, but so far I have not had any issues with this, as it performs just as well as my older laptops 7200 RPM drive.

This is the only big reason I gave this laptop 4 eggs instead of 5. This laptop has, as advertised, a very powerful audio card and internal headphone amp, however with this comes an issue with not playing nice with low impedance headphones, such as your everyday earbuds (~12-16 ohm).

There is an audible white noise/hissing when using low-impedance headphones with this laptop and it can get very irritating. I use ATH-M50's rated at 38 ohm impedance, and though VERY soft and tolerable, hissing can still be heard.

I contacted ASUS about this issue and tried installing newer Realtek drivers, but that did not help. So far there is no resolution to this issue from ASUS yet, and it appears to be an impedance mismatch issue with the output, which would be something not fixable with software or driver updates.

If you are looking to get this laptop and want a non-irritating audio experience, make sure you have headphones rated at at least ~40 ohm to combat the hissing.

Other Thoughts: - This model isn't advertised with one, but mine came with a blu-ray player rather than a regular DVD R/W drive. No complaints personally about that, but just something to keep in mind.

- Some may find the aluminum palmrest and inside of the laptop to be a fingerprint magnet, and it sort of is, but you aren't buying a machine like this to just make it look pretty.

- Some people say they get a fixable blue-screen problem when playing some games caused by the nVidia drivers, but I have not had any problem with it, so it may well be one of those "luck of the draw" issues some laptops have.

I would like to end with saying that I urge ASUS to look into the audio impedance issue and, if possible, find a fix and release the fix ASAP! It can really ruin a good laptop experience, since many people casually listen to their laptops with normal earbuds!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: Fast - with the hardware that this laptop has it runs anything i throw at it on full settings. Planetside2, Day Z mod, 7days tolive, Corel x7, Arma 2, etc. Additionally this pc stays cool, you can feel the heat from the vents in the back. However i cant say the fans have ever kicked on full even after hours of gaming. The only reason i gave it 4 stars is due to the HDD which i will bring up in the cons section. It came perfectly, popped it out of the box, ran the updates, and had it setup and playing games in an hour or two. The keyboard is well constructed, as is the body of the pc. It is on the heavy side, but coming from a 18" XPS its on par for me. There is some bloatware to remove but that is expected. Dual HDD slots makes it super easy to swap a SSD, and have the storage for the other slot. I have not seen any of the issues mentioned in other reviews.

Cons: the only con at this time is the HDD. at 5400 rpm it is a dog when multitasking. if you are doing basic work or loading one program at a time it is quick. However if you are downloading a program and opening another or something like that, it does hang a little bit due to the slow speed of the HDD. I as others have recommended would also suggest getting a SSD for your main drive and a higher rpm TB drive for your storage. I do alot of file and graphic work on this so i need to be able to access multiple files quickly from storage. If you just want regular storage than the original storage should be ok, tho i would still recomend a faster HDD for storage too.

Other Thoughts: All in all aside from the HDD I really enjoy this laptop and am happy with the purchase. It seems that in reading reviews from other sites about this laptop that the issues other people have mentioned have been resolved. Also for some reason i received this laptop with a blue ray player not a dvd rw. which i will be looking into soon.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a Machine

Pros: Amazing cooling, Surprising battery life, Great Audio/Visuals. It's ASUS ('Nuff said) really a great portable for even the pickiest users. It's obviously not gonna match up to the $4000 gaming laptop's on the market right now with bigger processors and better dedicated graphics, but for the pricepoint, its better than MSI (which I have always experienced as trash after owning 2 and returning them) or Acer, HP, Alienware, etc. Goes great with my ROCCAT periph's I put a Samsung EVO SSD in here fresh out of the box, and I couldn't be happier.

Cons: You can only use the dedicated graphics when plugged in.

Other Thoughts: Asus makes quality hardware. The bloatware on this machine is pretty average but I even ended up using all of it.

3 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: Not many pros here considering you know what you're getting, so you pay for it. I that a Pro? I don't know.

Cons: No gaming headsets work with this thing. If you find a pair that do, tell me. I've tried Razer Krakens = mic doesn't work. Turtle Beach = mic doesn't work. Two different pairs of other brands from the office = mics don't work. A combination of trying usb mics, with an amp, w/o amp, 3.5 mic all result in this thing not accepting what I'm giving it. If you *NEED* your gaming headset mic, then look elsewhere. This laptop is not meat for you to use any other mic than the built-in webcam mic.

4 out of 5 eggsI Love It

Pros: 1. Wonderful performance
2. Always quiet, even when gaming
3. Amazing keyboard
4. A touchpad that doesn't suck.
5. Very fast bootup

Cons: 1. Bloatware, (easy to remove though)
2. Some "ghosting" on screen, (not an issue for people with multiple monitors)

Other Thoughts: The computer is perfect for me, however there are a few flaws that a couple people may want to look at before purchasing.

2 out of 5 eggsSolid hardware, but with a serious defect

Pros: The 860M is a powerful card when running properly, and the i7 installed is likewise a beefy processor. Great for multitasking, games, and anything else performance-heavy you can throw at it. Good keyboard, big touchpad with separate buttons - which is good, since the touchpad is a sticking point for me. Good, long battery life, too, when not gaming, thanks to the Optimus system.

Cons: The model has a universal defect that causes blue screens if you use the latest Nvidia drivers for the graphics card, and performance troubles with the driver Asus provides. It's not just me; I've had Newegg replace the whole notebook, and the replacement has the same issue. Several others on the ROG forum do, too. Neither Asus nor Nvidia will acknowledge the issue thus far. Would recommend against buying if this issue remains unaddressed.

Touchpad is also a bit too big and sensitive; if you turn off the "touchpad delay" setting so you can use it in games, expect to have a lot of accidental clicks when your palm hits the corner of the touchpad.

Other Thoughts: Official ROG Forum details on the driver problem here:

5 out of 5 eggsExtreamly good

Pros: I'll try to show you my point of view in every important aspect for gamer/powerful laptop.
1. Design - looks great, mat outside, brushed around keyboard. Fingerprints everywhere.
2. Display : great, full HD, sharp
3. Keyboard : nice, with light - 3 llevels
4. GTX 860M - great, new, powerful
5. I7 - powerful
6. Network - up to 144 Mbit/s (N)
7. Ram 12 GB - enough

Why did I get it : because it's (I think) the only computer on the market, designed around cooling ! This thing stays extremely cool when playing WOT on Ultra settings. It is tough, ROG logo on front has back-light ; looks great at night. Powerful machine need cooling - it was a main factor around graphic adapter. Because of that - this unit is heavy. BUT if you looking for powerful gamer machine - who cares about weight ?

8. Battery : I don't care but expecting no more that 3-4 hours
BTW - full GTX power available only with AC adapter plugged in.

Cons: 1. HHD - to slooooooooooooooooow
What I did was put SDD 240Gb for system. Computer started flying. Amen.
Original 1Tb drive is in as my data partition.

What's missing: BR burner - BUT you can get one like LG BT30N for 79 bucks and you're all set.

Other Thoughts: What would I change : pad position push a little bit to the right - messing up when playing with left hand on keyboard - what I do is simply switching it off.

HDD - as I mentioned - add SSD for system ASAP - I bought one same day as this ASUS.

Ohhh : don't forget to buy one 16GB flash for Asus backtracker - simply plug it in and system gets brand new withing minutes ! YES minutes !

This is the fastest (with SSD) laptop I ever had BUT I wouldn't say that with no SSD aboard - yes - it is so important.

5 out of 5 eggsG750

Pros: This is a very high quality laptop. I would not buy any other laptop than this laptop. All of the design flaws in the gaming series have been fleshed out over the years to near perfection.

Cons: The panel is a TN panel. However most panels are TN panels. This only means less color and cannot be viewed at an angle. The terabyte hard drive is good as a storage drive. You should immediately buy an SSD drive and put in in the main spot. This computer holds two hard drives. The other down side is you will have to purchase a windows 8 CD. This is expected nowadays. Nobody is shipping computers with the CD.

Other Thoughts: Do not waste your money on any other brand. Asus is not a company that buys parts and simply puts things together. Asus manufactures the parts. Alienware/dell and other companies are wanna be Asus laptops.
Assembly companies cannot compete with a company that creates every piece of software and hardware. for their computers.

4 out of 5 eggsNot what I needed at all

Pros: This laptop handles games fantastically if thats what you're after. Tested bioshock infinite on maxed settings and handled it like it was surfing the web. no problems what so ever.

Cons: That being said, gaming is the only thing you will be doing with this laptop. It is way to large and heavy to be treated like any other laptop. Its basically a really small desktop you might take to a friends house at most. its so big i cant even fit it in my messenger bag and close the bag. It also just is really uncomfortable to put on your lap because of the big rubber feet on it. everything about it is designed to be used as a replacement for a desktop.

Other Thoughts: If you want a gaming laptop its great. if you want to use it as a regular laptop, youer gonna need something smaller. This thing is not that portable.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

Pros: Amazing laptop. Intel i7 is lightning fast, 12GB RAM is decent. High quality screen. Nvidia 860M Maxwell is an awesome card. This is the GM107 Maxwell video card inside. Stays very cool, have run 8 hour gaming sessions with friends and nothing ever feels warm to the touch (usually you can feel some heat through keyboard on gaming laptops).

Cons: Not really a con, but SSD's have spoiled me rotten. The internal mechanical hard drive this thing ships with feels painfully slow. My first order of business was dropping a Samsung 840 EVO 500GB. I did a clean install of Windows 8 on the SSD and reformatted the HDD as a storage drive. That being said this laptop is a dream come true.

Other Thoughts: For those of you who cannot stand Windows 8, there are 2 programs I strongly recommend from Stardock.

1. Start 8 is a system mod that brings back the Windows 7 style start menu and navigation. You never have to see metro again unless you chose to.

2. Modern Mix lets you run the metro apps in windowed views which is especially handy and way more efficient than the default full screen mode.
