5 out of 5 eggsReplacement Arrived

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Illuminated keyboard, great graphics performance when playing games, boots up in seconds, keyboard has nice feel to it, free back pack

Cons: Had to return 1st unit to Newegg due to a high pitched whine coming from the CPU fan. The free back pack is too small to fit this laptop!

Other Thoughts: I received my G750JZDS71 laptop and after a few minutes of operation I heard a loud, high pitched whine coming from the CPU fan. I did an RMA thru Newegg and it was a painless experience and got the replacement about a week or two later.

The G750JZDS71 comes with the Nvidia 880M GPU and it has handled all the games I've thrown at it with ease. I've been playing Planetary Annihilation on it quite frequently and have no issues. I read a review that stated that Nvidia drivers are causing that user BSOD's, but I've been updating the 880's drivers with the newest builds from Nvidia and have not experienced a BSOD on this laptop, ever. My desktop system uses an EVGA GTX 770 and this 880 performs about the same when running benchmarks. The SSD configuration at 1st had me a bit puzzled until I took a look at the drive itself. It is actually 2x 128GB SSDs on a single drive connected to a single SATA port. One of the things I really like about the G750 vs my prior G75 is the elimination of any type of speaker grill at the top of the keyboard surface. Also the top surface/keyboard surround is aluminum, not rubber/plastic like on my old G75. This makes it a lot easier to clean. Asus is still partition happy. The 256GB SSD is split into 2 partitions as is the 1TB HDD, for a total of 4 drives. I used this configuration for a bit, then decided to do a factory restore and simply extended the main partition on each drive so now I only see 2 drives, plus the optical drive. Be aware that Asus does not include a restore/driver disc. There is a recovery partition and a utility included where you can back up that partition to a memory card/USB drive. I can't comment on battery life as I only use it when plugged in. I've owned a few of these Asus ROG laptops and can say that the G750JZ series is the best yet!

When I received the 1st (defective) unit, I also received a free back pack courtesy of Newegg. A few weeks ago I tried to use it and discovered there was no way this laptop was going to fit in it. Asus should include a back pack and mouse with the higher end models like they did with the G73 and G75 series in the past.

All in all I love this laptop and have no complaints or problems with the unit itself.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome.

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Debated this over the Msi g70 880m, Glad to see my choice didn't let me down. The heat that this puts off is minimal and have yet to see 50c temps when gaming. BF4, wow and a little bit of ps2. It does require vsync in a a few of them but not worth knocking an egg off for. Can see the complaint on the lcd screen but vsync resolves the issue spoken of.

Cons: None really. only thing that comes to mind is the fact I have to turn on v-ysnc to avoid screen tearing. Can't really consider this a con though....It handles wonderfully when gaming paired with a Logitech g700s wireless mouse.

Other Thoughts: I had asked about the ssd swap for the mechanical drive. I checked the mechanical drive for what information was on board and saw nothing. Everything was on the 256g ssd model I had selected from the original purhcase, So I just put in my Samsung evo 1t drive and it was just a straight R/R besides the regular format and allocate space once in windows. Windows 8.1 classic shell works well with this. Overall the laptop scream fancy touting the brushhed aluminum keyboard and nice crisp keys, it was built like it was meant to game. I still spend more time on my desk top but it's ready for a lan party when I go to my buddies. And it barely fits my Swiss gear 17" bag. I don't carry it much it's just for when I go to a friends for a lan party.

2 out of 5 eggsGood laptop ruined by an infuriating keyboard.

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Just read the specs - I don't think you'll be very disappointed in its performance. It does everything you'd hope it could do.

Cons: I'm amazed that so many people are commenting on how much they like the keyboard. Yes, it feels nice. But in my case, it's the worst part of this laptop, and honestly makes me regret my decision to purchase it.

This keyboard quite consistently just drops my keystrokes. It happened twice in that last sentence. It is SUPREMELY frustrating. When I started noticing it, I thought "oh, I can live with this." That ended up being a lot more difficult than I thought.

Other Thoughts: Honestly, if I had known this in advance, I would've purchased a diferent laptop. That's right - a "diferent" laptop; this keyboard refuses to let me spell that correctly.

5 out of 5 eggsA final, updated review

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Great value for the hardware, the 880M is a beast and is nearly identical in power to a desktop 770.

The CPU is powerful (but I have some disappointment with it).

The two SSD's are fast in RAID 0 and it still comes with a 1TB storage HDD.

24GB of RAM is plenty, but I wish they stepped up the RAM to 32GB just to fill all four slots and not have this weird, 3-slot ram config.

The keyboard is the best laptop keyboard I've ever used and is backlit too!

Cons: The CPU is quite a bit of a step down from a desktop 4770. Nothing crazy like half the power, but it's a good 30% weaker. For having the same CPU as the laptop $1000 cheaper, Asus REALLY should have at least upgraded this thing to the 4800MQ CPU which is only about 15% weaker than a 4770, much closer to desktop performance.

The other major complaint I have is with the screen. I highlighted the issues Asus is having with panels in my last review, but this is a different thing. Laptop makers right now are going crazy over higher-resolution panels in their laptops but Asus sat back and left this one at 1080p. Given this laptop actually has the power to drive higher-resolutions unlike the other laptops, this one really should have had a 1440p panel in it. It would have been the perfect laptop.

Other Thoughts: This still gets 5 stars because it is by far the best price:performance laptop for a high performance gaming laptop. It's heavy as hell and huge, but if you buy this expecting something other than that, you shouldn't be buying this type of laptop in the first place.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Gaming Platform

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Every game I've thrown at this rig, which includes all the newest major releases, plays smooth and clean at near maximum if not maximum graphics settings. The SSD provides lightning quick bout speeds as well as loading-free gaming for your most important titles. Well worth the money.

Cons: As per all worthy rigs, it's a bit on the bulky side. Don't expect to be able to fit this into your average laptop bag. But for the power it holds, well worth the added size.

1 out of 5 eggsBEWARE OF SCREEN

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Nearly everything about this laptop is wonderful. Great price to performance ratio for a high performance laptop, stays cool, quiet, etc.

Cons: THE SCREEN.

Asus SKIMPS BIGTIME on the screens for no good reason. This was an issue with the last-generation G750 laptops and they kept the panels for this generation too. The biggest offender is AUO which gave me the panel issue on the last-gen model, and, surprise surprise, this laptop I received has an AUO panel with the issue. On the last laptop, I got a CHI MEI panel in one that didn't have the issue and kept that.

What the issue actually is, is very subtle yet noticeable vertical lines running through the screen. It causes eye fatigue and is very annoying and warps colors.

Other Thoughts: I am returning this for a replacement and will continue to do so until I get one that doesn't contain a defective screen, and I suspect one that doesn't have the defect will be again CHI MEI. AUO needs to learn some quality control.

I will also make a new review eventually when I get the new laptop that doesn't have an issue so I can review the laptop itself and not Asus's and the panel manufacturer's inability to check their products.

2 out of 5 eggsI want to love it so much

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: -Durable
-The keyboard feels amazing
-Never loud, the most silent laptop I have ever heard, even while gaming!
-Super cool, sometimes it was so cold it left prints
-FAST. Handles even the most demanding games at max settings with 60fps
-Good battery life
-BIg track pad
-Have I mentioned the keyboard?
-Fast boot up time

Cons: -The screen has ghosting, there is a slight trail behind ANYTHING in motion that causes me to get motion sick
-The way the integrated graphics work with the dedicated GPU causes some games to refuse to use the GPU and only use the integrated graphics
-Steam Big Picture flickers
-In some games the left and right mouse button cannot be used at the same time without a mouse (cannot explain why)
-Whenever any key is held down you are unable to use the left mouse button
-lots of bloatwear
-The sound comes from somewhere in the bottom of the keyboard it seems, making everything sound washed out and not pleasant to hear
-For me the size is a problem. Because it is slightly larger than most 17.3" laptops you will need a special bag for it.

Other Thoughts: I really wanted to love this laptop. It runs like a dream, it honestly does. I absolutally LOVE the how the keyboard feels (which is a big deal for me because I spend a lot of time writing code), and it seems like it would be one of the most reliable high end laptops. I could see myself using it for years to come, if it weren't for all of these little problems here and there adding up. Games running on integrated graphics? I can fix. The screen's weird ghosting problem? I cannot. The sound something I know and RMA won't fix, as it is designed that way. And I really can't explain why just clicking with the built in track pad buttons is so finicky. It works fine with a mouse plugged in. Overall I would advise you not to buy it. There is just too much wrong with it to be spending so much on.

5 out of 5 eggsG750JZ is excellent notebook

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: I have a G750JH and was totally wowed with that. My brother had an operation so I bought him the G750JZ to play with while recovering.

The G750JZ is nice because it comes with Win 8.1 and you don't have to apply all the Win 8 fixes before being able to upgrade to Win 8.1. That's a plus

Same great performance and it's a solid notebook. The keyboard is better then I expected and the backlit keys are cool.

ASUS support is another reason to buy this notebook. Make sure you do the registration.

Cons: Some consider this heavy, but neither my brother or I normally carry it anywhere.

Other Thoughts: Really glad I chose the ASUS ROG notebooks. I like the quality.

5 out of 5 eggsAsus G750JZ - DS71

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: - Laptop stays cool to the touch as long as the two back vents are open and no objects obstructing the air flow even when playing games like Diablo 3 RoS on highest settings for several hours.
- Decent sound quality with built in subwoofer
- Onboard amplifier makes a difference when headphones plugged in. (Tested with cheap and expensive headphones)
- Nice solid build quality doesn't feel cheap
- Nice looking chiclet style backlit keyboard with good response when typing (I type pretty fast about 112wpm)
- Nice touch pad with multi-touch gestures (scrolling etc) some gestures desgined for Windows 8
- Fast boot up with SSD like 6 or 7 seconds
- More than enough HDD space for all your movies and music or work files.
- When playing games never experienced CPU or GPU throttling
- Easy access to ram, HDD and SSD for upgrading
- Nice beautiful 1080p Matte screen with pretty decent wide viewing angles without too much color distortion
- Outer rubberized coating provides a nice grip and feel
- Brush aluminum on the inside of the laptop gives a solid feel.
- Minimal bloatware

Cons: -Finger-print magnet
- Blu-ray player had issues playing till I reinstalled the driver
- Weird HDD and SSD partitions the 256GB SSD is split into two 128GB in a 0 raid config. The 1 terabyte harddrive is split to two 500GB partitions.

Other Thoughts: I"m really happy I purchased this laptop. I did a lot of research on the ASUS G750 and it seemed like the best choice for the Nvidias newest GPU and some solid specs that rival some desktops. Important factor for me was that this laptop stays cool even after hours of gaming. I have built my own desktops before and I was looking for an upgradeable desktop replacement that I could travel with when moving. It's a 17" laptop that's close to 10lbs not something you would want to carry around if you're walking around a lot. They do make a Asus Nomad backpack that's designed specifically for the G750 if you want to lug this beast on your adventures. You're not going to find the same specs on any other laptop at this time. If you're looking for a laptop to rip through some serious gaming , video/graphics editing processing this is where it's at.

5 out of 5 eggsG750JZ-DS71

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Booted up pretty fast. Free Backpack!

Cons: Had to return for replacement.

Other Thoughts: I've been a fan of the Asus ROG laptops since 2010 when I bought a G73JH. I currently own a G75VW and figured I'd pass this one on to my teenage son so I ordered the G750JZ-DS71. It arrived as expected, I unpacked it, snapped the battery into place and powered it up. After going the initial configuration of Windows 8.1, I got to the desktop. Within 5 minutes, to my dismay, I heard an abnormal whine as soon as one of the fans kicked on. I spent about an hour exploring the Win 8.1 interface and hoping the noise would go away but it never did. I requested an RMA thru the Newegg website and packed the unit up and sent it back the following day. I do believe the noise was coming from the CPU fan, assuming it is the one on the left side of the laptop when facing the screen. I am disappointed that I have to wait for the replacement, but once I receive it I will provide a thorough review. I am interested in finding out the physical layout of the SSDs as there are only 2 HDD/SSD bays and this model has 2x 128GB SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration, as well as a 1TB HDD. I suspect an internal mSATA drive. I am also looking forward to benchmarking the Nvidia 880M.
