5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Laptop

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Fast Gaming Laptop with decent sized SSD, large Hitachi hard drive, Intel Core I7 Quad CPU and 24GB fast memory make this a hard system to beat. Dedicated GeForce 880M Graphics Card maximizes CPU performance and 1080P Screen makes for vivid, detailed display. Quality Construction is visible and obvious throughout. The laptop is visually pleasing in appearance as well as being highly functional.

Cons: All the pro's come with a price, i.e. it weights nearly 10 lbs. Few cases are available that it fits into and which afford some protection for this investment. The SSD is shipped in a multi-partition configuration for some inexplicable reason but this is not a significant detractor.

Other Thoughts: Good news: Everki is increasing the laptop pouch of its Titan Backpack to accommodate large gaming laptops (November 2014 availability date). The Targus XL is a good interim fit though padding is thin. Currently, the other available cases suffer from lower quality with early zipper failures, seams pulling apart and handles/straps breaking due to the weight of the laptop and accessories.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Well worth it. Plays Planetside 2 pretty well with the 4700hq. Handles any other game I throw at it with ease.

Cons: Replaced mechanical drive with Samsung evo 1t ssd hdd. Not a big issue just didn't want to pay for asus's bigger ssd drive so I just got mine with the 256g ssd from factory with o/s on it and all the goodies. Use the bigger ssd to record my game play sometimes and store games. I do not add or remove alot of files. Simply just a few of my games and that's it.

Other Thoughts: You kinda have to fiddle with the laptop with all the settings to find it's turbo mode for cpu. It's under Hybrid power. It will enable the 3.4 boost on the i7. I've had it for a few months and just now realized I was gaming at stock cpu clocks. Not a big deal the rig still performs very well. Priced an alienware laptop with a lower end gear and was about 1k$ more than this. Honestly this or the msi is the best bang for the buck. Saw the Razor and didn't like the thin profile, I wanted something with raw power and cooling. As is with the Asus boost for the cpu/gpu, the cooling is well under control.

5 out of 5 eggsAwaken the Beast!

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This Beast is super fast, with two 128GB SanDisk mSSD in RAID 0, and the Intel Core i7 4700HQ, what more can you ask for?
The amazingly fast NVidia GeForce GTX 880M flagship card on board, it destroys all games on ultra setting.

Cons: None so far!

Other Thoughts: I been playing all my games on "Ultra Setting", and on average been hitting 60 fps, or higher.
The Intel Core i7 4700HQ, in combo with the 2 SanDisk 128GB mSDD drives in RAID 0 makes the Gaming Laptop unbeatable!!!!

5 out of 5 eggsROG

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Excellent performance and boot time. Great looking machinge with stong build. There was a learning curve with Windows 8.1, but once I figured it out, I actually liked it.

Runs everygame I have played at maximum settings without issue save one.

Cons: The only thing in OS 8.1 one that continues to annoy me is the Charms bar. Just get rid of it already.

Had some challenges getting some of my older games to run. Had to change a few Nvidia settings.

Had some trouble with screen lag on Risen 3. Never figured out the problem. It was the only game with this problem, and didn't matter what the graphics were set to.

Other Thoughts: Some have noted a poor sound quality compared to other laptops built in speakers. I almost always either have a headset on, or plug into external speakers. So I can't say, but it sounds great in surround sound.

Out of box default setting forced everygame to run at minimal settings...Why, ASUS would I spend over $2000 on computer to play games at minimal settings?

Still a 5 egg profuct. I won't knock ASUS for things I don't like about Windows. I will chalk Risen up as an oddity for now. If I have any problems with The Witcher 3 or Borderlands, I will be back to update.

5 out of 5 eggsReplacement Arrived

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Illuminated keyboard, great graphics performance when playing games, boots up in seconds, keyboard has nice feel to it, free back pack

Cons: Had to return 1st unit to Newegg due to a high pitched whine coming from the CPU fan. The free back pack is too small to fit this laptop!

Other Thoughts: I received my G750JZDS71 laptop and after a few minutes of operation I heard a loud, high pitched whine coming from the CPU fan. I did an RMA thru Newegg and it was a painless experience and got the replacement about a week or two later.

The G750JZDS71 comes with the Nvidia 880M GPU and it has handled all the games I've thrown at it with ease. I've been playing Planetary Annihilation on it quite frequently and have no issues. I read a review that stated that Nvidia drivers are causing that user BSOD's, but I've been updating the 880's drivers with the newest builds from Nvidia and have not experienced a BSOD on this laptop, ever. My desktop system uses an EVGA GTX 770 and this 880 performs about the same when running benchmarks. The SSD configuration at 1st had me a bit puzzled until I took a look at the drive itself. It is actually 2x 128GB SSDs on a single drive connected to a single SATA port. One of the things I really like about the G750 vs my prior G75 is the elimination of any type of speaker grill at the top of the keyboard surface. Also the top surface/keyboard surround is aluminum, not rubber/plastic like on my old G75. This makes it a lot easier to clean. Asus is still partition happy. The 256GB SSD is split into 2 partitions as is the 1TB HDD, for a total of 4 drives. I used this configuration for a bit, then decided to do a factory restore and simply extended the main partition on each drive so now I only see 2 drives, plus the optical drive. Be aware that Asus does not include a restore/driver disc. There is a recovery partition and a utility included where you can back up that partition to a memory card/USB drive. I can't comment on battery life as I only use it when plugged in. I've owned a few of these Asus ROG laptops and can say that the G750JZ series is the best yet!

When I received the 1st (defective) unit, I also received a free back pack courtesy of Newegg. A few weeks ago I tried to use it and discovered there was no way this laptop was going to fit in it. Asus should include a back pack and mouse with the higher end models like they did with the G73 and G75 series in the past.

All in all I love this laptop and have no complaints or problems with the unit itself.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome.

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Debated this over the Msi g70 880m, Glad to see my choice didn't let me down. The heat that this puts off is minimal and have yet to see 50c temps when gaming. BF4, wow and a little bit of ps2. It does require vsync in a a few of them but not worth knocking an egg off for. Can see the complaint on the lcd screen but vsync resolves the issue spoken of.

Cons: None really. only thing that comes to mind is the fact I have to turn on v-ysnc to avoid screen tearing. Can't really consider this a con though....It handles wonderfully when gaming paired with a Logitech g700s wireless mouse.

Other Thoughts: I had asked about the ssd swap for the mechanical drive. I checked the mechanical drive for what information was on board and saw nothing. Everything was on the 256g ssd model I had selected from the original purhcase, So I just put in my Samsung evo 1t drive and it was just a straight R/R besides the regular format and allocate space once in windows. Windows 8.1 classic shell works well with this. Overall the laptop scream fancy touting the brushhed aluminum keyboard and nice crisp keys, it was built like it was meant to game. I still spend more time on my desk top but it's ready for a lan party when I go to my buddies. And it barely fits my Swiss gear 17" bag. I don't carry it much it's just for when I go to a friends for a lan party.

2 out of 5 eggsGood laptop ruined by an infuriating keyboard.

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Just read the specs - I don't think you'll be very disappointed in its performance. It does everything you'd hope it could do.

Cons: I'm amazed that so many people are commenting on how much they like the keyboard. Yes, it feels nice. But in my case, it's the worst part of this laptop, and honestly makes me regret my decision to purchase it.

This keyboard quite consistently just drops my keystrokes. It happened twice in that last sentence. It is SUPREMELY frustrating. When I started noticing it, I thought "oh, I can live with this." That ended up being a lot more difficult than I thought.

Other Thoughts: Honestly, if I had known this in advance, I would've purchased a diferent laptop. That's right - a "diferent" laptop; this keyboard refuses to let me spell that correctly.

5 out of 5 eggsA final, updated review

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Great value for the hardware, the 880M is a beast and is nearly identical in power to a desktop 770.

The CPU is powerful (but I have some disappointment with it).

The two SSD's are fast in RAID 0 and it still comes with a 1TB storage HDD.

24GB of RAM is plenty, but I wish they stepped up the RAM to 32GB just to fill all four slots and not have this weird, 3-slot ram config.

The keyboard is the best laptop keyboard I've ever used and is backlit too!

Cons: The CPU is quite a bit of a step down from a desktop 4770. Nothing crazy like half the power, but it's a good 30% weaker. For having the same CPU as the laptop $1000 cheaper, Asus REALLY should have at least upgraded this thing to the 4800MQ CPU which is only about 15% weaker than a 4770, much closer to desktop performance.

The other major complaint I have is with the screen. I highlighted the issues Asus is having with panels in my last review, but this is a different thing. Laptop makers right now are going crazy over higher-resolution panels in their laptops but Asus sat back and left this one at 1080p. Given this laptop actually has the power to drive higher-resolutions unlike the other laptops, this one really should have had a 1440p panel in it. It would have been the perfect laptop.

Other Thoughts: This still gets 5 stars because it is by far the best price:performance laptop for a high performance gaming laptop. It's heavy as hell and huge, but if you buy this expecting something other than that, you shouldn't be buying this type of laptop in the first place.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Gaming Platform

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Every game I've thrown at this rig, which includes all the newest major releases, plays smooth and clean at near maximum if not maximum graphics settings. The SSD provides lightning quick bout speeds as well as loading-free gaming for your most important titles. Well worth the money.

Cons: As per all worthy rigs, it's a bit on the bulky side. Don't expect to be able to fit this into your average laptop bag. But for the power it holds, well worth the added size.

1 out of 5 eggsBEWARE OF SCREEN

This review is from: ASUS ROG G750 Series G750JZ-DS71 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Nearly everything about this laptop is wonderful. Great price to performance ratio for a high performance laptop, stays cool, quiet, etc.

Cons: THE SCREEN.

Asus SKIMPS BIGTIME on the screens for no good reason. This was an issue with the last-generation G750 laptops and they kept the panels for this generation too. The biggest offender is AUO which gave me the panel issue on the last-gen model, and, surprise surprise, this laptop I received has an AUO panel with the issue. On the last laptop, I got a CHI MEI panel in one that didn't have the issue and kept that.

What the issue actually is, is very subtle yet noticeable vertical lines running through the screen. It causes eye fatigue and is very annoying and warps colors.

Other Thoughts: I am returning this for a replacement and will continue to do so until I get one that doesn't contain a defective screen, and I suspect one that doesn't have the defect will be again CHI MEI. AUO needs to learn some quality control.

I will also make a new review eventually when I get the new laptop that doesn't have an issue so I can review the laptop itself and not Asus's and the panel manufacturer's inability to check their products.
