5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding Value

Pros: This laptop has great components that make it incredibly competitive at the price I purchased it at ($700). I won't go into the specs of the parts because they are what they are (great processor, good dedicated card, etc). The inner body and outer lid are aluminum, which makes this feel very solid but it doesn't feel heavy. The end of the power cord that plugs into the laptop is a right-angle so doesn't jut out as much as other power cords I've seen. The track pad is large and the support for multi-touch is excellent. The audio is really rich for a laptop. Despite the industry trend I appreciate having an ODD for some software I don't yet have in digital-only form. having four USB 3.0 ports is great, especially since one of them is "live" meaning it supplies power when the laptop is off (great for charging devices). The display is nice, as long as you like matte finishes (which I do). The keyboard's keys are nicely spaced and have a very tactile feel, as opposed to some very slick keys or beveled keys that other laptops have.

As for specs, this laptop has an i7 4710HQ which makes it outstandingly fast. 8GB of RAM is plenty for my mobile needs, including modest gaming as well as programming. The graphics card performs well under load, albeit quite hot.

Added bonus: it comes with a disc full of hardware drivers in the event I need to install a fresh OS image.

Cons: To get it out of the way first: the 5400 RPM hard drive is slow, but you have to expect that (you can't buy a laptop that explicitly says it has a 5400 RPM hard drive and complain that it's slow). The track pad's tap (as opposed to press/click) responsiveness isn't quite what I'd expect. I find myself having to tap fairly hard to get a left click or a double click to register. The aluminum lid quickly becomes covered in fingerprints (although a microfiber cloth was provided to clean this). The inner body and inner lid are covered with stickers (not just the tradition "Intel Inside" or "Powered by nVidia" stickers, those sales-y stickers you find on floor models at retail stores). The frivolous "sub-woofer" improves the quality of the audio so little it's not worth it considering you wouldn't plug it in which it's on you lap (the cable for it is only about a foot long).

Other Thoughts: Fantastic buy; the pros heavily outweigh the cons considering I can upgrade the hard disc if I'd like to. Stylish and powerful, this laptop is everything you would want in what I would call a modest gaming machine. For a non-gaming user, this is everything you need and more.

5 out of 5 eggsA gift that is loved.

Pros: i bought this PC for my younger sister who does play moderate games on it. Everything in this Pc is great so far, found no issues. the CPU is an I7 which is more then enough for 90% of the day to day stuff.
It has a dedicated GPU(when plugged in or when forced when not plugged in) this helps with the gaming. Now yes, the GPU is a gt 840(not great) but it gets the job done. So far ive seen her play the Sims 2(old i know but she likes this one) and also FF13 and FF13-2 which are much more demanding but it plays very well with no issues at 1080p!

Cons: if i wanted to be picky i would say the GT 840, but that was something choose to have it in. i could have bought one with a higher gpu but this Pc isn't going to be used just for gaming.

Other Thoughts: i like it, i got this laptop for her to have as a long term investment. the laptop has more then enough power to last years to come ( i hope it lasts that long) so, i would recommend it for anyone who plays games but isn't heavy on it(aka looking or insanely good graphics)

1 out of 5 eggsStay far far away

Pros: The computer runs wonderfully... for a little while. I use Photoshop, Illustrator and Xara Web Designer without a hitch. Gaming on it is smooth and beautiful. I haven't experienced the bloat ware problems or any issues with the keyboard or track pad. However...

Cons: Well as of yesterday this laptop has completely died three times. All is well and then all the sudden it won't turn on. The first laptop I received worked for 5 days then died completely. I sent it back to Newegg. They determined that it was a faulty motherboard and replaced it completely.

The second laptop lasted for 11 days then once again completely dead. I was already past the 30 day return policy so I decided to send it in to Asus. HUGE mistake. The RMA email they sent me is very oddly formatted so the first three letters of each line are cut off. I've never seen anything like it. Having just completed a Newegg RMA I figured it would be pretty similar and from what I could read it seemed like it was. I repacked the laptop in it's original packaging and sent it off.

I got the laptop back in a couple weeks and all of the original packaging was missing. They also didn't send me the power cord portion of the power supply even though it was on their initial check list. Apparently the original packaging is listed under "accessories" in the RMA email and I was not guaranteed to get it back. Never thought of the box as an accessory, who knew? You would think they would point out this fact in the "packaging/ shipping information" section but no. I figured the safest way to ship it was the box made specifically for it. If they deemed it necessary to replace it wouldn't they need the packaging?

This time the laptop lasted for three whole weeks. I moved it very minimally, kept it seated on a cooling pad, and even got a brand new surge protector just to be safe. Same old story, all the sudden it just dies. To Newegg's credit they would still refund my money this late in the game, if only I had the original BOX! So now, no chance of a refund and all Asus will say is that I should pay to ship it for a third time to have it worked on. I am definitely unhappy with Asus and will never give them my business again.

Other Thoughts: The laptop runs everything so well, if only it would last.

5 out of 5 eggsA Spartan

Pros: Good on its feet, better when you are saddled in. I can take it to a friends house and play lan party games (UT2k4, WC3:FT, Terraria, Civ 5) or take it to school and have a comfortable battery life to jot all the notes down then play some legend of grimrock while doing homework. Lightweight, compact, and a decent keypad. Expect about 4 hours or so off a good charge.

Cons: I would say no microsoft office loaded onto the machine, or no option to get a full version of office 13 included, but i was able to get one with student discount, so no real bad mark.

Other Thoughts: If you were considering getting this nice powerhouse, i'd recommend (if you already have a system cd for your preferred OS) getting a 7200 rpm hard drive, or a SSD if you want to. 5400 rpm is a noticeable drawback for me personally, when trying to play Civ in terms of boot time.

3 out of 5 eggsGood machine, but beware

Pros: Good value for the hardware you get. Speedy and does what I need it to do.

Cons: Absolutely LOADED with crapware. I bought this machine as a surprise Christmas gift for my girlfriend, and spent close to 3 hours getting the thing to stop showing me ads I didn't want, or otherwise try to make me use services that I had no reason to ever use.

Other Thoughts: The free Norton installed on it started screaming about trojans within 3 minutes of booting it up for the first time. Adware called snipsnap would NOT go away....I'd kill it in task manager so I could hopefully uninstall the program, and it would pop right back up again. Eventually had to boot to safe mode just to be able to kill it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I'm glad that you find it as a good value for the hardware. I certainly understand your concern regarding an Adware that Norton is detecting and I can assure you that this was not pre-installed from the ASUS factory. All laptop are free from spyware or malware when they roll out to the market. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150176799 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsI am happy I purchased this laptop

Pros: Solid constructions.
Sound quality is amazing. I have never heard such quality sound from a portable device.
HDD is fast for 5400rpm (still going with an SSD though)
All English documentation
Comes with drivers disk
ASUS emblem on the lid lights up

Cons: Screen could be a little better, but definitely better than most.
Keyboard could be a little better.
Bottom is plastic.
Page file memory takes up a small chunk of the RAM but won't be an issue after upgrading to a SSD.

Other Thoughts: Although I can't agree that this is a gaming laptop, I am completely happy with this purchase. I do play lots of the newest games, but I did not buy this laptop for gaming. I have no doubt that streaming Steam from my desktop will be smooth though.
I spent a good 8 hours total looking into laptops before making a purchase and this laptop has all of the specs that I wanted/needed. I had originally purchased a Lenovo G510 as they were pretty inexpensive at the time, but I am glad I sent it back and spent a little more on this machine.
The sound quality is amazing. I have been dabbling in music for the past 17 years or so and I have developed quite an ear for quality sound and with the sub-speaker plugged in I was blown away at the range that this system can produce with such a small set of speakers. I honestly can't say enough about the sound system. WOW, seriously. I didn't even have to use an equalizer when listening to music.
The processor is strong, but don't expect it to be as snappy as a desktop system (unless your desktop is pre-built).
The first thing I do with a new PC whenever i buy/build one is to perform a burn in test. I used Passmark's burn in test and the only thing that "failed" was the temperature. Using CPUID's Hardware Manager I watched the temps max at 93 degrees C. I ran the test twice just to make sure none of the parts would fail and it still runs smooth as butter. I noticed that the processor stays around 3.2GHz when plugged in under normal operation, which is fine by me since I was expecting it to be around 2.5GHz.
The screen may have a 150 degree viewing angle from the horizontal, but the vertical doesn't have such a good range.

For someone looking at getting a new mid-level laptop with a 4th gen Intel i7 processor, this one is probably your best bet.

This is the third piece of equipment I own made by ASUS. They are my favorite tech company at the moment. I have never had an issue with any of their equipment. The other two ASUS products i have are a M5A99FX Pro R2 motherboard and my GTX 780 video card (which I software overclock to add +215 MHz. It still has never gone over 70 degrees C).

4 out of 5 eggsGreat PC for the price!

Pros: * Specs are GREAT for this price range - very fast i7 processor with 8 gigs of RAM, upgrade-able to 16gb.
* Very quiet! The fan is like a whisper - Not annoying like some of the other laptops I've used.
* Dedicated GeForce GT 840M with 2gigs of memory
* So far I can run every game I throw at it, though not always at the highest settings.
* 1920 x 1080 resolution is crisp and awesome!
* Excellent audio! I'm not an audiophile but I really like these speakers compared to other laptops I've used. It also comes with a mini speaker that you can attach to it and it seems to add extra bass and depth to the sound which is nice.
* Nice display, though it does not have the best viewing angles. Not as clear as an IPS display.
* Windows 8.1 (I like it much better than Windows 8).
* 4 USB 3.0 ports allow for plenty of connections.
* VGA port - you don't see these as often but it is still nice to have for older equipment.
* DVD drive - Also becoming obsolete, but it's nice that this laptop includes one just in case.
* Nice aluminum-feel around the keyboard.
* Back-lit keyboard is nice!
* The black keyboard keys over the aluminum color looks good and you can easily see the keys at night with the back-lit keyboard. I compared this one with another ASUS laptop that had white keys with a white back-lit light and they are harder to see. That was one of the reasons I chose this one over the other.
* Pretty nice track pad that handles some gestures, but hard to beat a Macbook's track pad.

Cons: - 5400 RPM drive is pretty slow. It will boot to Windows fast but when you run programs you can definitely sense it's the bottleneck. I swapped it out for a Crucial M500 240gig SSD and wow this thing FLIES now! Pretty much instant on and programs/games load VERY quickly.

- NVIDIA Geforce GT 840m works pretty well, but if you are the type of gamer who wants to run all the latest games on highest settings and resolution, this is not the laptop for you. I am mostly a casual gamer who plays socially. I often play older games, but so far I have been able to play games from 2011-2013 on mostly high settings. It all depends on the resolution you want to run them on with good FPS. I usually turn my resolution to 1366 x 768 or so and then I can crank up the graphics. If you are a casual gamer who is OK with medium settings on the latest games, this laptop should work fine for you.

- Keyboard is overall nice and I like the feel of the keys. Not too loud and very fluid - not too "sticky" feeling either. The only problem is some keys (rarely) may not register if you don't hit them hard enough. Overall, I didn't have too many problems with this. I found that as I got used to the keyboard I noticed this happening less. If you plan to do a lot of work on this laptop all day, you may want to use an external mouse and keyboard - better support for your hands/wrist.

- Battery life is about 3-5 hours, which isn't too great but I usually keep it plugged in anyway. If you are on the go a lot and need good battery life, look elsewhere.

- Comes with some bloatware that I didn't need or want. I did a fresh install of Win 8.1 when I swapped out for an SSD.

Other Thoughts: I have been researching laptops for a very long time and was seriously debating between a Macbook and a PC. Ultimately, I decided to go PC for now for the following reasons:

1) I play games socially from time to time and wanted to be able to play most games.
2) I didn't want to spend the extra money for a Mac.
3) This was an amazing deal for everything that comes with it. If you are looking for better hardware specs at a good price, you can get this for much cheaper than a Mac. But obviously, going with a PC has it's drawbacks as well. It depends on what is important to you.

I've had this laptop for about a month and so far it has worked very well. I've been keeping it busy every day, including some gaming marathons and so far it has handled everything with ease and no crashes.

3 out of 5 eggsProbably best for desktop replacement in the price range

Pros: + Stylish;
+ Dissipates heat well (thanks to aluminium chassis);
+ Powerful (w/o these Intel U series CPU limitations);

Cons: - Build isn't rock solid (see other thoughts below);
- Fingerprints all over top cover, hard to get rid of (doesn't bother me though);
- Hard drive reporting problems (poor QC?), see below;

Other Thoughts: Mine has slightly cracky screen frame on side, some (in fact - only one) key behaving slightly different from others. Got used to these quirks and was happy..
Until hard drive started to slightly click. Then it became more obvious. I downloaded SeaTools diagnostic software Short test immediately thrown up an error, with the recommendation of replacing the drive. Trying to contact Newegg/Seagate for now.
Otherwise I'm happy with this laptop, it eats everything I throw at it: VM's, Web/SQL servers, development IDE, music production/recording. Hard drive speed IS a real bottleneck, consider SSD upgrade.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's great to know that you consider the laptop as the best desktop replacement. I'm sorry if you are not satisfied with the build quality of the unit and has concern on fingerprints all over the top cover. All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections, the hardrive being faulty is an isolated case. ASUS provides warranty for the laptop in order to fix or repair any isolated factory escape defect. If you need further assistance sending the unit in for warranty service, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150123155 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't upgrade to windows 7

Pros: cheap, decent hardware

Cons: I decided to upgrade to windows 7 because the software that came on it originally was super awful laggy and bloated with unnecessary crud.

most computer components/laptops have multiple versions of drivers you can download on their website, but ASUS, for whatever reason, left out any windows 7 versions for download. The specs page is also very ambiguous and doesn't tell you what brand of WLAN it is, so after shooting in the dark for a couple of hours I'm just going to give up and get a nano wireless card :/

if anyone knows of the right drivers for the WLAN please let me know
