Electroluminescence Backlit Keyboard The P35K masters an automatic light sensing backlit keyboard. This significant feature adjusts the light to external conditions and makes typing and gaming in dimly lit rooms and dark conditions brighter and better.
Pros: The laptop has great features being fast processor, high end graphics card, 1080P screen, 2 SSD's for fast performance and 1 TB HDD for storage. Backlit keyboard makes it easy to see in the dark. Easily adjustable volume and outputs for sound, video, and 2nd monitors. I love the overall size of the laptop since it's less than an inch thick yet contains a quad core, separate graphics card, 3 HDD's, BluRay swapable drive.
Cons: The only con I've run into is the length of the battery. But that is due to the power behind the normal settings. If you turn off the graphics card and put the laptop into low power mode you can get about 4-5 hours out of the battery. THat isn't bad considering most gaming laptops have less than that. THe fan makes noise, but pretty much any laptop is going to do that if you have a graphics card.
Pros: Hardware: 1080 display, BD Rom, 16GB RAM, Video, bios that can be set to either Win7 or Win8 optimizations.
I've used Gigabyte brand motherboards for about 16 years (my first build was with a GA-6BXC) and was ready to try their notebook offering.
I had looked at a number of other brands and would have had to pay twice as much for specs similar to the P35k. The manufacturer has drivers for windows 7 and 8 on their website so with a little know-how, you can load windows 7 if you'd rather not use windows 8.
Cons: Software: first logon, created a user account and signed in, got multiple dot net error dialogs, had to reboot several times before I could get to the windows 8 tiles or desktop. Ran the USB imager tool provided by Gigabyte - had to restart several times because the computer fell assleep before finishing - I'd have thought that the tool could have broadcast a not idle to the OS so it wouldn't hibernate. When I ran the restore (to verify the memory stick) had to start over twice, first because the english was poor in the instructions, it sounded like you had to pick the source disk again, rather than the target for restore to, and there was no pick another drive if there was an error selecting the drive, you had to reboot and start over. When I rebooted again, I picked one of the internal drives and it restored, occasionally saying a file wasn't found but didn't share what file wasn't found. The restore appeared to work, but with errors showing on the console while running are concerning.
Other Thoughts: I'd highly recommend this system to computer adept folks who want a system with good hardware and plan to wipe the drives and load the OS themselves. I wouldn't recommend this system to someone who just wants it to work out of the box.
Also there 12+ screws to take the bottom off to get at the drives if you want to park them in a safe place so you can later sell the computer when you want to upgrade again or put in an SSD in place of the 1TB spindle drive. It wasn't hard, but it was tedious. Also note that there is a jumper for the speaker connection next to the RAM bay, if you want to remove the bottom of the system, be sure to disconnect this jumper first.
Some people have commented on the build quality, the shell of the system could do with being a little more solid feeling, but over all, the system feels pretty good. The screen is super thin, but feels pretty stiff and the hinges are solid.
Pros: Good features Slim design Lots of storage options
Cons: Lower build quality Built in update service
Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop looking for a higher performance schooling/gaming computer that was also on the slim design. On those thoughts I really wanted to love this laptop, the massive storage with an optical drive and the option to expand the storage with another ssd was amazing. But from the moment I started the laptop it was kinda buggy. Every time I started windows it would act up and give me an error, so long as I canceled the error it allowed me to access my desktop. After updating all of the drivers it went away and I didn't think twice. Fast forward 2 days later and it starts up asking for another update from gigabyte's update manager. I accepted it and it started to download and start the update. Shortly after it warned me that it may shut down and restart soon, it restarted. It started up to a screen saying that a recent hardware or software update messed up windows and that I needed to insert my windows installation disk to fix the problem. Even though I consider myself very computer savvy I decided to save myself the headache and another 100 dollars and go with a different laptop from a more reliable company. Again, I wanted to love this laptop, but the built in software and so-so build quality for a 1900 dollar computer turned me away.
