5 out of 5 eggsFantastic laptop!

Pros: Good workhorse laptop, but lets you play and run media with ease. Keyboard is the right size, even with the numpad you never feel cramped while typing. Battery lasts for hours. Speakers are nice and loud when watching movies. LED backlit screen looks awesome in all uses. The aluminum casing looks professional and stylish, and the weight is perfect for a laptop this size. The hard drive has Windows 7 Pro on it, and has both Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8 Pro media in the box, as well as a driver disc. As with any new computer, there is a certain amount of bloatware to uninstall, but most of the included utilities seem helpful and run rather well. I may not push my standard Windows 8 image to this one right away.

Cons: There is really only one minor negative that I've been able to come up with in 6 months. The top of the base is significantly larger than the bottom, which causes the following usability problems for me:
- You have to physically lift the laptop to unplug a network cable. Not generally an issue as I rarely use anything other than WiFi with this device, but thought I'd mention it.
- You also have to lift the laptop when popping the disc drive out. This may be partially due to how shallow the eject button is, but it is a minor inconvenience because, again, I don't use the drive very often. Your mileage may vary.
- I use this laptop in bed quite often due to an injury and was forced to buy a lap desk as the shape causes all vents to be blocked when using it on a soft surface of any kind. It's perfectly fine sitting on a desk or similar hard surface though.

Other Thoughts: I bought 5 of these laptops for a client 6 months ago and the execs loved them. We tested them in our IT department for several weeks before giving them out and were also very happy with them. When my ancient T60 was stolen from my father's house a few weeks ago, I went ahead and bought myself one based on the feedback from our client - if that's not a good endorsement, I don't know what is.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable, Good Work Machines

Pros: Nice Aluminum Upper body. Solid Performance. Your choice of Windows 7 or Windows 8 Professional (comes with both disks - with Windows 7 Professional installed). Easily upgaded to 16 GB PC12800 using the Ballistics fro Crucial -

Cons: Needs more ram (easily purchased here on NewEgg). Shorter than average battery life (I buy converters for all the trucks for out in the field, so this was never a concern for us)

Other Thoughts: I work in the oilfield services industry, and have to buy laptop computers that travel around in pickups going in and out of well sites on gravel roads. The machines take a beating. I have never had issues with any of these laptops. There was a mention in another review that the computer came with devices not installed. I have ordered over 75 of these and the about 40 of the 4540s model as well, and have not had a single issue with drivers, OS, or hardware. Not once. Never.

1 out of 5 eggsDriver issues from the moment I pulled it out of the box.

Pros: Laptop itself is really nice. I liked the color and the aluminum, it looked and felt very professional. In addition, the keyboard was decent to type on and had good support and feedback. I suspect the screen itself would have been nice too if it wasn't from the flickering due to the bad driver.

Cons: Laptop arrived with two items with question marks in the device manager. In addition, the video driver was either the wrong one or just bad as the screen was hurting my eyes and had a discernable flicker. Other drivers seemed to be a little finicky as well so I tried to update them initially online. I was unable to fix all of the issues at this point so I tried using the included HP software to recover the laptop and hope that it would fix the issue. I was unsuccessful with this course of action as well so I contacted Newegg for an RMA as I felt that I shouldn't have to be dealing with this on a new laptop. Newegg cleared me for an RMA and after speaking with customer service, approved me for a store credit so I didn't have to deal with the same issue on another laptop. Newegg received the RMA and rejected it even though it says approved in my RMA history. They accused me of altering or modifying the laptop by using the included HP software to try and recover it. In addition, they have refused to help me in any other way and are supposedly sending the same defective laptop back to me even though I have told them not too. This is a known issue with this laptop as I have seen other negative reviews here that they have deleted as I'm sure they will do with mine. Now, I am having to fight a company I have trusted for ten years to do the right thing and resolve this. I have never been disappointed with Newegg customer service until now. Try to avoid this one if you can so you can save yourself from the headache.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully we can come to some agreement soon so I can get a computer for the student I was buying this for since he starts his classes shortly.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I know not everyone was too pleased about Win7 but I do prefer it over Win8, so I'm glad I have both options with this machine and its OS, since this is not a touchscreen laptop. For its size, weight, look, feel (love that the pressure applied to the keys needn't be too much or too little for me), and maneuverability, I'm quite pleased.

Cons: (If you'd count it as a con) Not a back-lit keyboard.

I can't really complain about this machine at the moment. Sorry.

Other Thoughts: So far so good! I purchased this laptop for work and could have gone with something smaller but, being that this is my very first one (mine all mine!), I figured why not splurge a little. I know this baby will last me a very long time, given the way I take care of my things, so I am very pleased. Also, I did have to return the very first one due to a dead pixel, but customer service with Newegg was wonderful! Despite not wanting to part with the machine but knowing it was a must, was difficult, yet I knew the entire transaction was in good hands. Newegg made me feel very secure about the entire situation.
