i am looking at this product and getting it sent to me but im concerned bc some have said the wifi doesnt work?? is this the case? I want to be able to connect to the internet wirelessly

Hi Amy,
I just recently purchased the refurbished HP Envy, at the recommendation of the person who's tech knowledge I trust.  He went over the Envy before I ever brought it home to use and I've had no WiFi problems, though I live in a mtn. community where WiFi can be a prob just due to location as much as technology.  I would highly recommend this computer from THIS distributor, but also know that you have a good tech person available, if needed.  NewEgg is used widely by those who want quality without the BIG price tag.

Question 3

I read reviews that say this machine will not upgrade to windows 8.1, and also that the wifi was nnot working. If this occurs after I purchase, is there support for these issues?

my wifi did not work. it was in need of a driver update.  i was able to get the driver on the intel website. there are ac couple of vendors that provided wifi cards, so it may be a different driver, once updated it has worked flawlessly.

as for the 8.1 upgrade, it is supposed to be available although i have not updated mine yet.  tried once but my wife interupted the download so cant say for sure.

otherwise i like the computer just fine  ONLY real complaint as noted before the keyboard is a bit flexible. not sure if this is because of the extended  10 key or due to the led lights that illuminate it,  if you are using the keyboard a ton this might be an annoyance, but for normal use its fine.

Has anyone successfully upgraded to Windows 8.1 with this computer? If so, how?

Yes it was easy.

First, you have to install all the available Windows Update for Windows 8 (this will update the app store and make the next part available). Next, go to the "Store" app in Windows 8 and search for Windows 8.1 (its part of the store not part of Windows Update) - from there you can download and install the update.

I have done this on 2 of these laptops without any issues. The only odd part is having to install all the existing Windows Updates to Windows 8 first.

Yes. And some cool software to run the camera. I by dozens of computers a month, and I set these up for Doctors. This is a NICE laptop.

Is this laptop eligible for the free upgrade to windows 8.1?

Sure is. If you can get it to download. We're having trouble with 8.1, but that isn't HP's fault. May work for you! Windows is believed to be skipping 8.1 and going to 9 soon, which will also work for this computer. If not, there'd be a lot of angry people..

I know the RAM is expandable to 16GB, but what arrangement does the factory 8GB come pre-installed in? 2x4GB sticks? 1x8GB stick? The point of my question is could I upgrade the RAM with just another 8GB stick? Or would I have to purchase 2 8GB sticks to replace what is pre-installed?

Hi Garret,

The factory installed RAM comes in 2x4GB. 16GB is a lot if you're just using it for everyday type use. What I would do is purchase 1x8 and install it with 1x4GB and see how that works. If it's still not fast as responsive as you'd like, snag another stick of 4GB. So, yes, you could just get one 8GB stick, if you want 12GB of RAM. Buy 2 for 16GB. :) Hope that helps!
