Question 1

The OS is "Chrome" which is not included on Microsoft Office system requirements OS list. Have you installed any MSOffice products on your chromebook? Did you run into any issues? How heavy is office for a 1.4GHz processor with 4GB memory?

Hey Lane,
Before puchasing this, as far as I could tell the office suite is not compatible at all with chrome.  I personally have not been using the chromebook, as it was for our mother-in-law, but when I set it up, everything worked with the built-in google docs editor.  The back-up option I found in case that didn't work was installing OpenOffice, which hasn't been necessary yet.  The google docs is pretty much editing things through the google drive; which just to use a chromebook, you're required to set up a google account if you don't have one already, so you'll get access to all that inherently.

Read that this comes with 200 MB of free 3g service through T-Mobile as long as you own the laptop.  Can anyone confirm that?

If I remember correctly ... I think there might be 2 versions of the HP Chromebook 14. One that has the T-Mobile 3G option, and one without (the one I have). Seems like the T-Mobile one was higher $$ than thiis.  Search and read their descriptions very carefully!  Sorry I can't be more specific.  Good luck! By the way, my wife loves this thing!

have a hp chromelaptop and cannot download mcafree. does chrome have its own security software??

The Chromebook OS is based on the LINUX kernel which is not as susceptible to the viruses, and maleware that effects Windows or Apple  based machines.  I would suggest having a hardware router between the machine and the live internet for added security.
