5 out of 5 eggsExcellent hardware!

Pros: Excellent cost to performance ratio, all hardware supported by Linux and easy to work with, IMHO. CPU does frequency scaling depending on the workload, hibernate works, LCD is bright and crisp, WIFI works great, all without any fuss under Xubuntu 8.04. Kick the Windows habit with this laptop! Hats off to NewEgg for prompt shipping!

Cons: The Linux video drivers from VIA do not work well, I am using the OpenChrome drivers for video support under Linux. Everex website isn't good for finding information, and there appears to be little support from the manufacturer. The CPU fan wants to run non-stop (low speed), but that might be fixed with a setting in software somewhere. Not horribly loud, but not silent either.

Other Thoughts: I didn't care for gOS, so I loaded Ubuntu 8.04, and then eventually Xubuntu 8.04. Xubuntu has less overhead (no Gnome desktop) than Ubuntu, so it really makes the laptop feel much quicker. Personally, I don't think you will find a better laptop for Linux at the price I paid at NewEgg. The LCD display, processor, hard drive and DVD/CD-RW drives make this model very hard to beat. I will be adding another 512MB of RAM and maybe a larger battery to this laptop, and it will be absolutely perfect for me!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: You can't beat this machine for the price. Works fine out of the box. The preload is impressive - very 'mac' like. The screen is big and bright. This machine is perfect for somebody that just needs to get on the net.

Cons: None.

Pros: this is an awesome laptop if you want a new machine that is affordable, i put XP on it the day i got it and used drivers for VIA website, this thing rocks, i ordered me 2gigs for the ram and cant wait till it gets here so i can put it in.

Cons: none really other than finding drivers to make everything work

Other Thoughts: it cheap, new, and pretty fast! no complaints here

5 out of 5 eggsSecond times thecharm

Pros: Great Price, solidly built, everything works under linux wireless networking easy to set up, display is sharp and clear. If your ok using linux and want a laptop for productivity. This is a great laptop.

Cons: upgrading memory, can be a pain just order kingston memory use thier configuring program it works well. Everex say's if you install memory without calling them to walk you thru it, it will void the warrinty. It only take a few minutes so you might want to play their game. If you type to fast the computer gets confused where the curser is at.

Other Thoughts: Support by Everex isn't good but they finally have download to make a recovery CD.Register online asap. Although this isn't a prefect machine, it's still a great deal for the price. I now have 2 of them now that Everex came out with recover disc download, and when newegg had them on sale.

4 out of 5 eggsDont Expect Much, Wont be Dissapointed

Pros: Great LCD, very sharp and wide screen is a big +! Very light, easy to carry.

Cons: Very little support from Everex.com. There forum now has the machine listed however. Minimal amount of expansion ports. (i.e no pcmcia)!

Other Thoughts: I bought this machine for light use but have been impressed with the performance. I used a generic DDR2 PC4200 512MB stick with no problems at all. It cost me about $18! This machine will run Halo (1) at descent speeds. Set to 800x 680. I never used the Linux OS, not even once. Formated the HD with XP pro almost within the day I unboxed it. Used the drivers from VIA's website. So all in all for $350 bones I am pretty impressed. BUY THE 8 CELL BATTERY FROM everexstore.com!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 eggsHmmm?

Pros: It sure looks like a nice puter. I have not bought one yet. I have never owned a laptop. I am a VIA fan because I am told that no chips are quite so Linux friendly; though from a few reviews; hmmm. Every chip on that board is Via, so if if not everything works right off; it will, I would assume. Mild in power, but incredibly low energy. They sure do not run on hype.

Cons: It does not make sense to go 512 RAM. Why pay for something you just have to take out. I mean it would be better to sell the unit without any RAM, or battery. An hour and a half of battery time would just frustrate me, and only 512 RAM would wear thin right off for me. For that matter; why load an OS at all; just make sure it will load and comply with certain "Open Source" OS right out of the box 100%, and say so.There is nothing easier than Ubuntu, and the new 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) release is a giant, and I am told, loaded with drivers, and I would assume that would be true of the Xubuntu 8.04 too, but I do not really think this laptop would need Xubuntu yet; not if you put 2 GB of RAM in it.

Other Thoughts: Now that laptops are coming down to the poor man, they are going to need to un-sissify the laptop build, so people can build their own, just like like they do their desktop boxes. I like the fact that these Via boards come with the Via CPU right on them. Makes it kind of easy. I wonder what the maximum battery for this laptop is; may as well go full guns. The hard drive is plenty at 60 GB. I have to think that a 4 GB RAM potential would out last this, but in a few years when laptops are even cheaper; it may not matter that much. I would like to see a super EE Via laptop with an led screen, a maximum battery, 4 GB of RAM, and totally open source friendly. By the time they can stamp nine cores of CPU onto a board, they may not even need a heat sync for them, if it is tamed down enough. Who knows.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Linux Laptop

Pros: Great Price, good size hard drive.

Cons: Gos is loaded more for user's who are heavy web users. I am a developer and have no need for Gos. If you are a web surfer, it is all you would need.

Other Thoughts: Installed Fedora 8. Upgraded and wireless worked with the latest kernel. Installing 2gigs of mem. Couldn't be happier. With the price of this PC. You can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent value

Pros: I needed a Linux laptop for graduate computer science courses so this was ideal for me.

There are two memory slots and I was able to add a 2GB chip in addition to the 512MB chip. The Everex website now sells extended life batteries.

Cons: The default OS is based on Ubuntu 7 and has too much stuff pre-installed. I had problems running the regular component updates through the update manager (stuck processes, infinite loops, etc). Every other reboot started a regular Ubuntu desktop vs the Everex desktop. I ended up installing Ubuntu 8.0.4 after failing to get X11 started in Gentoo; the latest openchrome drivers caused the screen to go completely black. I tried vesa and even the latest version of xorg-server and mesa - nothing worked for me!

Other Thoughts: I would have used Kubuntu or Xubuntu but I was unable to manually set the screen resolution to 1440x900. So far I'm happy with Ubuntu, but I'll plan on switching back to Gentoo once I figure out how to get the video working.

I've been interested in this VIA CPU for a while now; it has built-in hardware AES / RSA / SHA encryption which the Linux kernel makes use of. It should be possible to utilize this feature to make an entire partition encrypted with little impact to the CPU.

5 out of 5 eggsEverex Notebook

Pros: I bought this for my mother and purchased an additional 512MB of RAM (1GB total). The OS is ubuntu with a different name and she couldn't tell a difference between it and windows, which was great.

Cons: It can get hot at times, but almost all laptops do.

512MB RAM is a bit low these days. May want to pick up at least a gig.

Other Thoughts: Great laptop for everyday use, but might be confusing for those of you who haven't used linux before.

5 out of 5 eggsSecond Exerex laptop

Pros: Linix was nice but different, I bought another HD and loaded Win XP Pro 32bit. Win XP went in just great, no install problems. VIA website had the drivers I needed, chipset, video and audio. Artheros AR5005G had the wireless driver, no problems. www.artheros/cz

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Added 1GB A-DATA memory module, I made sure it was the same manufacture. Win XP 32bit likes more than 1GB of memory. Total in the laptop was 1.5GB with 64MB shared video memory. I didn't have any preformance issues.
