This review is from: DELL XPS XPS15-6842sLV Intel Core i7 4702HQ (2.20GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 32GB SSD Touchscreen Notebook Windows 8.1
Pros: Gorgeous screen. Good keyboard. Acceptable touchscreen performance. First Windows track pad that didn't make me want to pull my hair out. 16GB RAM. Processor is just... wow. Windows 8.1 is a blast to use with a touchscreen.
Cons: Occasional buggy performance from touchscreen driver (will stop working and require reboot to restart). Luckily touch is only one of several input types I use + boot time is under 15 seconds so that it's not that big of a deal when it stops. The stock hard drive is garbage even with the hybrid SSD for fast booting... I highly recommend you upgrade to an SSD or if you have the cash, or buy the top-of-line XPS15 model with 512GB SSD. Unfortunately, some applications don't scale properly in the ultra hi-res desktop.
Other Thoughts: I agonized over this purchase looking at several brands and models. Ultimately, the Dell offered the internal specs I was looking for in a very sleek design. I'm very happy with my purchase so far. The machine handles everything I throw at it with ease. I've had several browser tabs opens, Visual Studio, MS Project, Word, Excel all open while running a couple scripts in the background and never once experienced anything resembling a slow-down. Being that this isn't a gaming laptop, you can't play games at ultra settings, but if you're planning on spending this much on a laptop, you should already know that. The touchscreen driver failing can be frustrating, but it's only happened a couple times, and I can honestly say I'm very surprised how much I touch my screen. A buddy has a year older XPS and I kept trying to touch his screen because even after only a couple weeks of use, the extra input has its time and place where it shines. Also, Dell was absolutely fantastic in helping me upgrade the stock HDD to a speedy SSD by overnighting me the OS install disc and following up with me on some driver questions. It's been 10 years since I last purchased a laptop and I must say that I'm very pleased with the hardware and even Dell's included software isn't terrible considering some of the other junk-ware I've seen installed (looking at you Samsung and Asus). If you're looking for a business class laptop in a classy chassis... XPS15 is where it's at.
