Does this machine come pre-installed with and virus protection or anything thing else?

Yes, the PC comes with a variety of mostly useful and some unuseful apps, which are basically free items. One must purchase any additional productivity software independently. Personally I bought the MS Office Suite v10 and a fresh copy of Adobe acrobat at additional cost. As is ut of the box, it will require more software to be truly useful.

Can I run externals (Screen, keyboard, mouse) off of this unit?

Yes, this model has hdmi output and 2 usb.2 and one usb.3, in addition you get a headphone jack and what i found useful a a sd card slot

Can I use Excel, powerpoint and word on this computer?  Will I have to purchase Windows office separately?

It has trial Office preinstalled. If you use Office365 just sign in and it will automatically make it a licensed copy for you.

Is this computer compatible with the Dell1660 printer?

I luv my new Dell 11 3000 notebook. Have no complaints and only nice things to report about it. I use a Brother and/or HP Color LAser printers. Although I can't say for absolute certain this notebook will work with a Dell 1660 Printer, I'd be very suprised if a Dell notebook did NOT work with any modern day Dell printer. You can always query this question direct to Dell on their webpage.

1)  I need to know how large and what type of RAM can be used with this unit to increase speed - also if the unit is throttled or limited to any certain speed?

2) What type and any limitations there are to using SSD - was thinking of adding 240 to 256 SSD?

i know you can put 8 gb in there and has to be sat2 ssd not sat3 hope this helps
