2 out of 5 eggsbad mouse bad mouse

Pros: Hardware performs just fine

Cons: As others have mentioned, the touchpad on this computer is absolutely horrendous. Get a separate mouse immediately and don't even bother trying to fix the touchpad

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for a general purpose computer

Pros: I bought this computer for my mother for christmas and she's been very happy with it I've used it a few times myself and it does its job

Cons: HDD I wasn't expecting the performance of the drive to be so low end I'd definitely think about investing in an SSD

Other Thoughts: While setting it up everything was taking forever to do so I opened up ResMon to see what was happening the preinstalled antivirus (I think it was mcafee?) keeps the hdd read maxed out and bogs it down so I completely removed it and went with something a little more lightweight (Microsoft security essentials) but you shouldn't really have this problem if you buy an SSD

5 out of 5 eggsGood bang for buck

Pros: Good looking, great price.

Cons: not a big fan of chicklet style keyboards, wish it had drivers for windows 7 on the acer website

Other Thoughts: really happy with the purchase. I bought 2 of these for each of my kids. Plays minecraft and skyrim. not a great gaming notebook but will get the job done. with a ram upgrade and a ssd this thing would be great but I knew that before purchasing.

4 out of 5 eggsFast and Smooth

Pros: - A8 is a beast even though its at 2.1GHz. Runs all applications and most games I tested (Diablo 3, Borderlands 2, Crysis 2) on medium settings with no hiccups.

- Great sound, I was surprised the sound was so good for such a thin laptop.

- The construction is definitely beautiful. It is very thin and looks very nice.

Cons: - The first one sent to me by Newegg had 2 dead pixels, so there is a egg off for that. It;s the first time I got a dead pixel laptop from Acer so I wont complain too much or take off another egg. But you have to keep those at the most minimum, I have heard some complaints recently.

- HDD needs to be swapped for an SSD right away.
(See Other Thoughts Section)

Other Thoughts: - You must swap the HDD for a SSD right away. It is a waste to buy this nice laptop and not swap the hard drive for a SSD, you'd be wasting money in a way. I put a 250gb Samsung Evo in this thing and it sis booting Win 8.1 in 10 seconds. running apps smoothly and playing games.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Budget Laptop

Pros: Budget performance laptop. Thin, though this comes at the cost of the CD/DVD drive. This is a plus in my book. All shortcut keys and hardware work well with Linux Mint 16. I haven't had any issues after installing the OS from an external drive. Tried Win 7 as well and had a little trouble finding the required drivers for some of the components.

Cons: Do not upgrade the bios to V3.07, the thing went a little nuts afterwards and would crash here and there. Ended up returning it to Acer and they replaced the board without issue, so no complaints there. At 35w the fans spin up a bit more then I would like but the typing surface stays cool so that is a plus.

Other Thoughts: Other then sending it back and having to wait I have been happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Budget Gaming Laptop

Pros: Great price
Upgradable RAM Slot
15.6 inch display
USB 3.0 port
Fast (see cons)

Cons: Touchpad is horrendous. This is our second modern Acer and both have this disgusting touchpad. What were they thinking? I dropped in a mouse like everyone else said.
Although this thing was fast with the RAM upgrade, the bloatware still causes windows to hang on opening everything for about 2 minutes.
Has a dead pixel, but I am not paying to send it back. The graphics are not supreme anyway so what is a tiny blue dot to that?

Other Thoughts: I was looking for a cheap gaming laptop for LAN parties. I mostly wanted something that would run steam indie games and source engine games. It did not fail to disappoint. I do believe that something is holding back its potential (possibly the video drivers). Even some of the older games (killing floor and need for speed world) need to be on very low to mid settings to get reasonable frame rates. Those graphics are 5 years old and although this is an intro laptop, i got the same performance out of an old Raedon HD 4200 w/ phenom II x4 1.6ghz laptop from years before this one.
I might be tossing Windows 7 on this to see if gaming performance increases, but I do not want to lose my Windows 8 license for the experiment.
As far as movies and web surfing, this thing is unstoppable. Page refreshes are almost instant and the 4 speakers sound amazing.
The thing is Ultra compact and I love typing on it, just wish the touchpad had a little more testing, i mean honestly it isnt even usable how the heck did this thing pass production?
I am very happy with this purchase and like my acer of 07, I am sure this thing will be with the family for many years.

5 out of 5 eggsBudget at its finest.

Pros: If you did your home work before you bought this laptop like I did, then you discovered it was a good deal. After a couple of days of careful research I found on a price/performance comparison that nothing touches this laptop in the $400 price range. It will cost an additional $200 to $450 additional cash in most cases to find a laptop that will out perform this and give a meaningful boost. That's when you make the jump from the AMD A8 to the A10 series. Or get an Intel system paired with G Force Graphics. AMD has always been superior at beating intel at the budget end.

This is a budget gaming laptop that needs a memory upgrade if you plan on playing newer titles well. The graphics processing unit shares system memory. It only allocates 512 MB of system memory which isn't quite enough in some cases. However many newer games have options that will allow you to dedicate more system memory to the graphics processor. I plan on getting an 8 gig stick of memory soon. Even so out of the box it plays newer games on the lowest settings. Farcry 3, Rome II Total War etc. The quad core CPU and 4 gigs of stock DDR3 ram are enough to make this computer perform all other tasks very well.

Not a good touch pad?
Pffft, who cares? I use a mouse. All touch pads suck.

No optical drive?
That is what makes an ultra slim laptop possible and makes this product more reasonably priced. No biggie however, I already owned an external DVD drive before I bought my laptop, which I promptly used to install Windows 7, and I haven't looked back yet. I actually installed a clean, bloat free copy of windows 8.1 because I wanted to judge for my self, and yep, it has an unfamilar feel to it, and and feels clunky. The cool thing is, that you can switch back to Windows 8 at any time by simply installing an MSDN copy (virgin copy) of windows. The serial number for Windows 8 is permanently embedded on the Acer Dazzler motherboard and automatically injects the number into your operating system. So if for some reason you like Windows * You get the option to upgrade to windows 8.1 for free, even so Windows 7 is still the choice for me. I may choose to go back to 8 at a later time, maybe, if Microsoft irons it out some. Certainly they should have 2 versions of Windows 8 available. One for touch screens and one for non touch. Gone is Windows Backup on Windows 8, one of Microsoft's best free tools.

A little over a month in and I have no issues or glitches. I feel I got exactly what I paid for. I was $100 dollars of for a week at New Egg after Thanks Giving. Glad I snagged one. $379 bucks.

Cons: If I encounter any issues I will promptly edit my review.

5 out of 5 eggsNice looking laptop, good specs

Pros: Great laptop for the price. Very thin and light.
I already wrote a review but I wanted to add to it with my notes below that may help others downgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 7...

Cons: Windows 8 still isn't where I want it to be.
Touchpad and keyboard are a bit odd.

Other Thoughts: I took my own notes so I can post them here for anyone else who wants to install Windows 7 on their Acer V5-552.

* Acquire a Windows 7 USB install drive. If you only have a disc then convert that to a disk image and then copy the disk image to a USB drive. NTFS format worked for me, Fat32 probably will too. If youre not sure how to do this, do some quick Googling. There is a lot of documentation out there about this step.
* Once you have your Windows 7 USB drive, boot into the BIOs by restarting the computer and pressing F2 as soon as you see the Acer logo.
* Go to "Boot" menu and change "UEFI" to "Legacy"
* Save and Exit the BIOS.
* The computer will restart again. Press F12 as soon as you see the Acer logo.
* Select USB HDD. The Windows 7 installation setup should begin to load.
* When you get to the screen with your Windows partitions, "Delete" all of them. Then click "New". Then click the "Next" button and Windows 7 should begin to install.
* After installing Windows 7 successfully you'll need to install the necessary driver software. On another computer go to Acer's website and go to the "Drivers and Manuals" section. Search go to Ultra-thin > Aspire > Aspire V5-551. Download the Atheros and Broadcom Wireless LAN drivers. Put the files on a USB drive and then transfer them to your Acer and install. If they do not work then go to the drivers for the Aspire V5-471, select Windows 7 64-bit, and install these Atheros and Broadcam Wireless LAN drivers instead.
* Now you should be able to connect to the internet on the Acer! Go back to the Acer website and download the AMD VGA Driver for the Acer V5-552. Even though it says it's for Windows 8, it should work with Windows 7. Install it. Now you should have all the required drivers!
* Run Windows 7 Updates (you can do this by opening IE and going to the "Safety" menu and then click "Check for Updates" or something similar.
* Audio seems to work without any drivers downloaded/installed from the Acer website... but if you want, go ahead and try to install any other drivers from the Acer website such as audio, bluetooth, card reader, LAN, touchpad, etc...

That's about it. This took me a few hours to get set up... mostly due to the Windows 7 updates taking so long to download/install. It's 2AM and Im going to sleep.

EDIT: Dec 7, 2013
Everything is still working. However I found that I needed to install the audio driver because I was hearing strange fragments when audio would play sometimes. The Windows 8 audio drivers for the V5-552 from the Acer website seem to work just fine with Windows 7.

I also wanted to install the LAN driver so I could plug in the ethernet cable directly to my router. However I found that the Windows 8 driver for the V5-552 on Acer's website DOES NOT work with Windows 7. It requires the Atheros LAN Driver but again the Acer website only seems to have the Windows 8 ve

4 out of 5 eggsPretty awesome laptop

Pros: Very affordable and good hardware for the price!
- Quad Core
-Thin & Light
-4 speakers, which are surprisingly good for a laptop.
-Minimalist design, nice keyboard.
-Best APU for gaming under 400.
-Easily accessible for upgrades, whole back comes off.
-Unpopulated RAM slot

Cons: But after a day of use, I've noticed a few things.
-LCD panel is very, VERY weak and not a very good build quality, push in the back and front to see what I mean.
-Touch-pad is near useless, I've never experienced anything worse. It also will randomly stop responding to your input but not often
-5400RPM HDD, but you get what you pay for.
-Without another 4GB to make it dual-channel, gaming performance will drag.
-irremovable battery.
-Windows 8 holds back it's potential.
-Did I mention Windows 8?

Other Thoughts: The four speakers are a really nice addition. I didn't buy this laptop as a gaming laptop but for programming and college, but the performance has been good so far.
I knocked off one egg because of the terrible mouse pad and build of the LCD. Other than that, it is a solid, light weight, laptop good for nearly any kind of use.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat affordable laptop

Pros: -Decent hardware for the price
Bought it when it was $379.99, and man what a steal!

-Easily accessible for upgrades
-Unpopulated ram slot
-Quad Core
-Decent gaming capability (after RAM upgrade)
-Thin and Light
-Two vents on the rear
-Sleek, minimalist design and nice full-sized chiclet keyboard.
-4 Speakers, and they are surprisingly good for a laptop.

Cons: Though it's a really decent laptop, like everything else, it does not come without it's faults.
- 4GB 1333Mhz ram soldered onto motherboard
- Touch pad is absolutely horrendous, and stops responding randomly sometimes though not often
- 5400 HDD, but you get what you pay for.
- Came with a stuck pixel
- Windows 8 really holds back it's potential.

You HAVE to use a USB mouse with this laptop. The touch-pad is not good at all. Without a RAM upgrade to make it Dual Channel, expect the gaming performance of the 8550g to be hindered dramatically

Other Thoughts: Though I've still a lot of cleaning and optimizing to do with this laptop, I do expect to enjoy it greatly. I didn't go in expecting a gaming machine for under $400, for this is for college, but it does perform well enough. Remember-
-Buy a 4GB SO-DIMM RAM module to upgrade to 8GB, expect great increases in the performance of games.
Like another reviewer, I needed the laptop mainly to program (but I'm also a painter).
