can you load Microsoft office on this?

No you cannot. This laptop runs chromeos an operating system built aroid the chrome browser and as sick, cannot run windows apps. It does however run google drive apps. Google has replacements for the majority of Microsoft office apps and they all run online, saving everything in the cloud automatically so you never ja e to worry about losing work. You can also share documents with other people so they can view or collaborate

Does this have wifi?

Yes, it comes with wifi. The purchase laptop is an experiment to introduce inexpensive computing solutions to a school. It is without a doubt a success. I set the trackpad to "Australian" mode so it runs like a macbook air. It is a solid, responsive computer. However, do not expect a two hundred dollar laptop to be built like a 1400 dollar machine. In my defense, and I work for a school and have a family, this is a very good, very responsive computer for the money. I am not sure you will find a better deal anywhere.

Does this come with MS Office (specifically Excel) software?

No it doesn't. The Chromebook runs the Chrome OS for which Microsoft does not make an OfficeSuite. 
That said it does use Google docs with which you can do most things that you can with Excel. For most people it's just fine and best of all Google is NOT charging anything for use of the software.

No version of Windows is used - it's Chrome OS, meaning the operating system is minimal and almost everything is online. It is great with Google Drive, however, and you can use this offline as well as long as you sync it up.

from what I'm reading, you cannot use a mouse on this unit?

Yes, they do. I have a wireless Logitech mouse (and keyboard) hooked up on mine, it does all that I need. For the record, I prefer the trackpad. I went into the settings on the Acer C720 and changed the touchpad to not use Tap-to-click and turned on Australian scrolling.

I see no mention of security (antivirus/antispyware,etc) in this Q&A listing.  Is no one using this machine concerned with such malware...?  Is Google OS and apps somehow immune to such things..?

To my knowledge nothing is stored on the machine itself. You are all in Google's cloud. I just let Google worry about that bit of it.

You can store local documents but in my case there is no need.

I bought the Chromebook for my 88 year old mother to check mail with and occasionally look a web page with pictures of her great grandson. She no longer comes to me with concerns of if this or that update is OK to install. Make her life less stressful and well as mine.

It is fairly light. 2-3 pounds.  Brought for my kids. They carry it around easily.

Neither.  The operating system is chromeOS by Google.  It is not a full-service operating system.  This device is for web-based functions almost exclusively.

Actually, I lied (sorta).  You can run Google Docs, which claims Word compatibility (YMMV).  I can't post URLs here, but ask Google for "Microsoft Word on a Chromebook"
