Can Ram and SSD be upgraded later?

SSD is upgrade-able with a regular 2.5 inch drive (did it on mine the bay fits it fine, works great).

Memory seems to be upgrade-able (I see an empty slot in mine but did not upgrade it, as don't see a need for it).

Everything is easily accessible. One screw dis-assembly, that screw is covered with your warranty sticker (you obviously loose your warranty if you upgrade anything).

I did see a place to enable bluetooth and did so.  So yes..but i haven't connected it to any bluetooth devices.  The computer has some great points and not so great.  The size is small, the screen is nice and sometimes the cursor jumps around.  But if you get it for surfing the web and use gmail you are all set.  I would give it 3.8 out of 5.

Does the refurbished Acer come with Microsoft word and excel? Im asking because I need a laptop for school ??

No, this has the chrome Operating System, not Microsoft. There are apps that will let you edit Excel and Word files to an extent. But The Google Docs software comes ready to use, which you can use to create docs and convert MS docs both ways, and edit them as you whish, with advanced collaboration features.
This is not a powerful machine, but it's fast, light, quick, and extremely portable. It's not a gaming machine and you cannot use it for coding or advanced applications. It's mostly limited to what you can do online and nothing else.. at least for now. It is very safe though, and it gets updated often. For the price it's the best machine I've ever had.

What S/W comes with it?  Does it use Microsoft office?

It comes with the best of Google which includes: Gmail, Google, Drive, Youtube, Google Search,  an offline document app, and offline spreadsheet app.  You can install any app that you see in the Chrome Web Store and it should work fine.  If you want to use Microsoft office programs on this you will have to use their online office apps.   If you search for word, excel, or powerpoint online in the Chrome web store you can try the apps out on another computer first.  Unfortunately there is no way that I know of to access Microsoft office when you are offline on this, but if you are willing to learn to use alternative programs it is still possible to do without Microsoft Office.  Unless you are required to use Microsoft Office for School or Work.

Can this run Win 7?

It will run windows 7 with some heavy techincal tweaking. I have it running ubuntu 14.04 LTS and it runs great. I upgraded it to 4gb of ram and it fly's but windows 7 has a minimum of 16gb for installation so you will end up filling up the drive pretty fast after updates. I researched windows installation and it requires a custom bios to be installed which is a risky thing. I would purchase this assuming NOT unless you want to dive into trying to do that.

Would this be a good laptop for a college freshmen?

Generally, yeah, I would say if you're on a budget (and depending on what your major is), this would be a perfectly adequate laptop for a college freshman.  Unless you are majoring in engineering, computer science or some other branch of science and will need to be downloading/running a bunch of specific applications and/or writing your own code, this should be fine for writing papers, researching topics on the internet, and most academic endeavors.  It's kind of automatically linked to cloud storage on Google's "Drive" server, but without a lot of hassle, it can be connected to DropBox or other cloud storage solutions - this is key, since it doesn't come with a lot of built-in storage.

Can I update memory I have 4 GB memory on hand?

Apparently, you can IF you have or get compatible RAM.

I had a similar question, and I found a link where Joel Dunn had ordered 4GB RAM online for their Chromebook and they added it to an empty slot, boosting their total installed RAM to 6GB. They did caution reading about a warranty void if sticker that was on their device if it was removed to install the RAM, so that may deter some from upgrading. Otherwise, it appears to be a very simple upgrade. Do keep in mind that RAM upgrades are ideally done while being grounded, so if you choose to do it and haven't done it before, read up on how to perform a proper RAM installation.
