3 out of 5 eggsUpdate to previous review

Pros: Still a nice machine, decent performer.

Cons: The disk became corrupted during an update and the machine would not boot. The power supply also died. The machine had about 100 hours on it. Avatar product support tried to help out with a recovery key, but could not get the machine running. RMA was easy, but beware - the warranty repair depot is in the states, and they ship via UPS.

Other Thoughts: For those who are not aware, UPS will charge brokerage fees if the shipper does not declare the item correctly, which Avatar did not. Cost me $88 to get mine back from UPS.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat if you snag it on sale

Pros: *Light-weight
*Starts instantly
*Fully functional with no major glitches or dead parts
*Decent for gaming

Cons: *Terrible speakers
*Overheats quickly
*Low battery life
*No DVD drive
*Windows 8/8.1
*Wouldn't pay the retail price for it.

Other Thoughts: Like many of the other reviewers, I purchased this in September 2013 when it went on Newegg-sale for $399. This goes above and beyond expectations for a laptop at that price-point. At that price, you just hope it works and won't die on you in a week. This not only works, it does neat tricks like starts up so quickly that the first few times, I was sure it was just waking from sleep and not fully booting from shut down. I wouldn't get too excited about it being an "ultrabook", but it is a very nice sub-$500 laptop.

My husband and I use ours for doing school work and for a little gaming. It performs better than most non-gaming laptops, though we have never tried to play MMO-style games on it. We play games through Steam like Borderlands 2 (it can handle co-op mode). We do not use it daily, however. We use it on average about once a week.

The battery only lasts about 3.5 hours if we're doing school work and less than 2 hours if gaming. Part of this could be due to the fact that we run a USB-powered laptop fan on ours due to overheating. Without the fan, it overheats no matter what we are doing within 15 minutes. We rarely use our laptop where we can't plug it into a wall, but it does not last very long without a charger.

Overall, it's still a good laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Customer Service

Pros: Starts ups very quickly with Intel Rapid Start. Price is right, for sure.

What I really liked most about this laptop is that after I did my best to mess it up while trying to downgrade to Windows 7 (don't... windows 8.1 comes out in a week) and I had to RMA it, they fixed it right away and had it back to me in a week. I'm in CA, but they only had it for 4 workdays before then sent it back to me. If you RMA anything from the big companies it will take you 2 weeks or a month to get it back.

Cons: I'm not a huge fan of the color or the logo, but that is not why I knocked off an egg...

As much as I really do appreciate the RMA process and personal customer service and support, I can't give it 5 eggs, because after getting it back from them I noticed the Microphone/Headphone combo jack is messed up and only works with my headphone/microphone combo if I have it plugged in half way. Seems the solder job was a little shoddy there.

However, I am certain if I was willing to part with it for another week (or maybe two since it isn't just a software issue this time) Avatar would be glad to fix it for me.

Other Thoughts: Avatar support is really great. I hope NewEgg pick up more of their stuff in the future. I would give them 4.5 eggs if I could.

4 out of 5 eggsbest price point behind the hardware curve

Pros: * Good value.
* Generic non-proprietary power supply.
* Full sized ethernet, VGA, and HDMI ports.
* All reference hardware. No obviously weird components.
* Only McAfee was pre-installed. The initial system image is nearly clean, so I didn't bother to do a wipe and reinstall.

Cons: * Doesn't wake up when the lid is opened.
* No mult-touch gestures. Single-touch only.
* The case is plastic, not metallic like most ultrabooks.
* The display panel is old technology; it has a lower black level, viewing angle, and pixel response than I expected.

Other Thoughts: This is a safe choice for a laptop that costs less than $500. Although it is missing some nearly standard features, you don't get that much more value at the next price point.

The SSD is not partitioned for Ready Boost, which is something that you should do manually.

I would buy this model again if I needed to replace it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little device

Pros: It's everything you expect in an ultrabook. It's thin, light-weight, quick and responsive (due to the 32 gb caching ssd), and the battery gets you 5 hours on light use like internet browsing. There's almost no bloat-ware.

Cons: The screen is very good, but it could be better. Although glossy monitors make colors more vibrant, bright back-lighting like sunlight through a window makes the screen difficult to view. The viewing angles aren't perfect, but if you find the sweet spot you're fine.

Other Thoughts: The motherboard only supports one ram module so if you upgrade, you have to swap out the existing module. Also, because it supports one stick, the processor obviously can't take advantage of it's dual channel memory controllers architecture. The wireless module is the intel centrino wireless-n half height mini-pcie card. It's perfectly fine but it only supports 1 stream on a single band. Upgrading it is a good idea if your connection isn't dependable under regular use. The hdd is slow but if you turn on ssd caching things become much more responsive. It important to note that intel's smart responce technology (ssd caching) is not 'ON' by default and you must activate it. Additionally, I have to give presentations on occasion which basically always requires a VGA port. This laptop is the only ultrabook I've ever seen with a VGA, and having found it on Shell Shocker, the amount of money I paid for the performance I received is incredible. It's worth noting that (in the future) swapping the hdd (cached to a small ssd) to a full fledged ssd will improve responsiveness and battery life, and this is easily done with removing the several screws on the back. Also upgrading to an 8 gb ram module that runs at 1.35 volts instead of the stock 1.5 volts will also improve battery life. These upgrades can be done by removing all the screws of the back plate and carefully removing the back plate.

An important note is intel's anti-theft software was causing problems for me. Removing it wasn't obvious. I had to run through the complete installation and THEN uninstall it to completely remove it. Otherwise, without doing this, there was no obvious way to remove it via the normal uninstall procedures for most software.

4 out of 5 eggsDon't fear this unknown brand

Pros: No bells or whistles
Very little pre-loaded unwanted-ware to remove
Very well put together with good materials
Worked as advertised
I was expecting a mediocre machine - its not!

Cons: Not ready to go out of the box
No help from the documentation
Windows 8 is annoying

Other Thoughts: I generally agree with the comments from other reviewers. What nobody has said is that this is an "Off-Brand" machine that really delivers. The on-sale price was simply too good to resist, but my expectations were low. I was surprised when this machine arrived and the build quality rivals machines at twice the price. Durability is an unknown, but the performance, features, and quality were way above what I thought was possible at that price point.

If you are not Windows savvy, get someone to help you set up the SSD before you start using it. There are a couple of choices on how to use it best for you, and picking one and making it work requires some work under the hood. Correct setup here is the key to making this machine's responsiveness rival your desktop.

Buy a 4 GB USB key at the same time, and make a windows 8 recovery key. Its not obvious how to do this, but there are instructions on several forums. You will be glad you did in several years. Either that, or get a USB optical drive, and build a recovery disk.

Oh, and that disk in the box includes some fairly worthless utilities, but also a complete set of Windows 7 drivers for the motherboard for those who want to put 7 on the machine instead. Nice touch!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat DVD Drive

Pros: Fast drive and I had no problems with it so far

Cons: This thing can get LOUD! When reading a disk this thing has a very audible sound, loudest part in my near silent rig idk if it's just mine or if they're all like that. I took an egg off for this

Other Thoughts: Other than the noise, it's a great product that I'd recommend to anybody looking for a plain cheap disc reader

5 out of 5 eggsCorrecting a Misunderstanding

Pros: 32GB SSD is used as a super-fast "cache" for all frequently used files to speed up performance. Much faster than relying on 500GB hard drive alone.

See "Other Thoughts" below.

Cons: User manual could be better.

Other Thoughts: Another user wrote that the 32GB SSD doesn't even have Windows on it unless you load it/set it up manually. This may be a misunderstanding.

Windows is fully installed on the 500GB hard disk drive (or HDD).

Using a feature called Intel Smart Response the computer copies all frequently used files onto the very speedy SSD. (It may take a few days of use for the computer to learn all the stuff you use often.)

The result is that you still have several hundred Gigabytes (GB) of storage space PLUS you get the speedy response of an SSD to make Windows and all your favorite programs, apps, games, and internet browser open much faster than if you just had the regular hard drive by itself.

I have used this SSD-cache-for-fast-response feature on 2 other computers and can confirm that it works very well.

And, the included 32GB SSD is enough capacity to handle all the so-called "hot files" to make the computer feel very fast indeed.

Regarding the actual capacity of the HDD and SSD, remember that the usable space on a drive after formatting is always less than the advertised space. So, for example, a 500GB HDD has around 465GB of usable space after formatting. And that is normal !

5 out of 5 eggsPrice=Quality

Pros: Fast boot time
decent hd space
cosmetically solid
looks good
keyboard is nice
i got it for 400 and I dont regret it at all

Cons: brand not well known
charge indicator is just one little light, red for charging, blue for charged

Other Thoughts: honestly a good buy if no major computing is needed, I got mine for law school to run word and simple videos and pdf's which it is perfect for.
