Question 1

Is there any padding on the bottom of the backpack?  I see many backpacks that lack this essential feature....  putting the backpack down is very common and if there's no padding on the bottom it could potentially damage the laptop.  Does anyone know if padding is available on the bottom and if so how effective are the padding?

Not sure how much padding you would need, but there is a very narrow layer of padding on the bottom.  Generally the padding will just protect the part of the laptop that is touching the padding, only a spring loaded system with shock absorbers would provide any real protection, as the most fragile components are usually the HDD, assuming it's powered on.  Otherwise, the padding being thicker would only make someone feel safer, but actual safety would be virtually unmeasurable. The components most fragile to shock have long ago been engineered with protections for when they are powered down, like the HDD.  If someone throws their laptop in the bag to the ground, no amount of padding will protect it and still make the bag convenient the carry.  As far as laptop bags, this one so far is my favorite, the laptop is held tight inside and there is room for much more, while the bag doesn't balloon out like cheaper backpacks when full. I hope this is helpful, been working on computers for over 20 years.

Is the bag water resisant?

as far as I can tell no it's not. But it is far better in water(raining) than most bags I have.
