Targus HD3 Gaming Chill Mat AWE57US

  • Cooler
ICON Loading...

The Targus HD3 Gaming Chill Mat is specifically designed to cool up to 18” high-performance laptops. This cooling system features three ultra-quiet, highly efficient fans with bearings that have twice the rated lifespan than standard cooling device fans. An adjustable fan speed dial features precise, tactile control so it’s easy to adjust the cooling level without taking your eyes off the laptop screen.

The durable aluminum alloy grill is lightweight and cool to the touch. Its industrial, perforated design was built to improve heat dissipation while the laptop is in use. Advanced airflow straighteners help focus the air right where you need it most while reducing air turbulence for more targeted and efficient cooling. The non-skid elastomer feet provide a stable grip so the chill mat does not slide while the laptop is being used. So you always know when it’s powered, a convenient LED indicator light is positioned on the front corner of the device.

  • newegg Unequaled Cooling HydroDynamic triple fan system carries heat away from critical areas and keeps up to 18" high-performance laptops cool, along with advanced airflow straightener focusing the airflow where it's needed most. The maximum fan speed is 3000RPM, and can be easily, accurately adjusted by the tactile dial control.
  • newegg Metal Conductors The surface is designed with a metal top to conduct heat away from your laptop, and the perforations help speed up the heat dissipation for improved cooling performance.
  • newegg Portable Small design can easily fit in your suitcase or overnighter during travel.
  • newegg USB-Powered Fans are powered using a standard USB connection that can be connected to your laptop or computer using a mini-USB cable.

5 out of 5 eggsReally cools the Notebook down

Pros: Keeps Notebook very cool for general usage.
Lowers temperature for notebooks while gaming about 10 degrees Cecilius
Holds Notebooks up to 18 inches no problem.
Great price.

Cons: Air from enters in up from bottom
No stand so Notebook cannot be propped.

Other Thoughts: I like this product because of the performance. There are three levels and I place on the first level and notebook is cool. My notebook fan shuts off when using this cooler. I have used other coolers in the past and have not seen this level of performance.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Cooling Pad!

Pros: really effective

Cons: fans are cheap, only 2 speeds

Other Thoughts: This is a great cooling pad, but with two flaws. The fans are cheap. The blades will break with minimal abuse, and there are only 2 speeds which was disappointing. I have learned to get over these and new fans aren't too spendy. Besides this is a great cooling pad and it gets the job done. Highly recommended for gaming laptops.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent but overpriced here

Pros: Good cooling, works well.

Cons: Price. A quick search and you'll find it 20-30.00 cheaper.

Other Thoughts: My first review was never published, as most of my reviews criticizing the egg magically seem to disappear. Anyway the product is great, egg...bad form.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth the High price, Definitely.

Pros: I've had this product since mid June of this year and it seems I got a good one because I have mine running on the absolute highest speeds (3300 RPM with 2 usb ports being used) almost 24 hours of every day and they haven't died or even made any sort of rattling noises that people say they have. I have the ASUS g51vx-Rx05 and as some of you might know it's a very hot running lappy. I have taken the back plate off seeing as it restricts 90% of the airflow you can get from this laptop cooling pad. My CPU is an Intel core 2 duo T9400 OC'd to 2.93 Ghz to match a T9800! My CPU temperatures at idle without the product were about 55 Celsius and at full load playing Diablo III I'm getting about 73 Celsius on average, and this just seems extremely high to me, But with the cooler the CPU will idle at about 27C and Load at about 45C. These temperatures are not only acceptable but generally low for even a Desktop! Also, my Ambient room temperature of my bedroom is about 66 Celsius. On my GPU which a lot of people know as a hot running card, The GTX 260M, idles at a very unreasonable temp of about 70 Celsius and loaded Diablo III at 102C and it would throttle and diablo would either crash or the fps would drop to about 5. Now isn't that absolutely ridiculous? With this cooler it will idle at about 45 Celsius and On load playing Diablo III it maxes out at about 75 Celsius. Now that's A HUGE Temperature difference. The Aluminum mesh holes really correspond with cool temperatures and will make the airflow of the fans pretty cool. The fans also do push A LOT of air, you wouldn't really expect it. Also, Running Prime 95 on the OC'd T9400 which was upgraded from the original p7350 Would Max out at a very stunning 56C which I find absolutely incredible. This Cooler does wonders.

Cons: The paint on the cooler is cheap and comes off easily, But I don't really care. Aesthetics aren't too important to me. The use of 2 usb ports to max the fans RPM out is kind of lame, but it makes sense and I don't mind it seeing as I personally only use 3 Usb ports at a time at most anyways. Also, at Max RPM the fans do get a little bit loud, but it's not a gritty gross fan sound, it's the type of sound you'd really want to hear from a fan. It literally sounds like Mass airflow instead of the fins having friction with the other fins or the edge of the holster for for the fan or something like that. There's no lift or an angle for the cooler making intake for the fans very minimum, So I took the aluminum mesh, highly angled upwards fan holder from the Cooler master notepal U3 and poot the chillmat on that. It really helped the intake of the fans and brought out the maximum potential of the cooler.

Other Thoughts: I recommend using this product in ambient temperatures Under about 25 Degrees Celsius or else the cooling potential of the chill mat is minimized. The Metal structure of this product makes it very heat conductive and it responds to high temperatures just as well, or er, badly, as it does with Cool temperatures!

5 out of 5 eggsHas worked great

Pros: Very solidly built. I take this at all times with my 19" Sager. Don't even bother turning the laptop on without this cooler as I don't want to burn up 2,500$ worth of laptop.
Lightweight, very low noise compared to competing models, sturdy and well constructed. I love that it is flat and not angled like the vast majority of laptop coolers out there. I have no need for uselessness such as that, I need a flat cooler as slim as I can get it.

Cons: Only two negatives I can find is that it does not have any USB ports to make up for the one you use to power it. This doesn't matter to anyone with a decent laptop built in the last 2-3 years though as you have plenty of ports on your laptop to begin with.
The other negative is that you cannot move the fans around like on some other models to specifically line up with the input fans on the bottom of your laptop. They are so big on this cooler though, it does not matter. My laptop shuts all 4 of it's fans down when it's running with this cooling plate under it and it runs dual GTX470m video cards on it.

Other Thoughts: Have owned this since Feb-2011. Not sure what all the 1eggs are on here with other people, they must be throwing theirs out the windows of moving cars. I've dropped mine twice and still works as good as the first time I got it. I even use it without the laptop while at work as a fan on my desk, just tilt it up, plug it into my work computer and let it run. Weight and size is negligible on this model as the laptop you've bought a cooling plate this big is larger and heavier anyways. At this rate, as long as I don't go taking this thing with me when I go scuba diving, or throwing it under road construction equipment like some folks here must be doing, I expect it to last as long as my laptop does, if not longer. Only other con I can think of, and it's not against the cooler itself is that I bought this when it was 58$ and I see that almost 2 years later, it now costs 80$. Was an ok value for me at 60, considering the price of my laptop, but 80$ for a fanplate?

1 out of 5 eggsShould've been great!

Pros: -Fits 17' Alienware M17xR3 pefectly
-Slim enough to be transported in backpack with laptop

Cons: -Weak flimsy mini-USB port on the back, not recessed in to hold cable steady
-Loud fans on lowest setting, even louder with doppler effect on high setting
-Cheap fans
-USB power insufficient
-Airflow not that effective

Other Thoughts: I purchased this on Newegg instead of Dell when I bought my M17xR3. Seemed great a first but the power kept cutting in and out from the mini-USB port not making a proper connection. I RMA'd this unit and got a new one.

The new unit has lasted for about 4 months now. But the power now cuts of and off at random. I stopped using the laptop to power it and plug it directly into a Universal power strip that has USB power ports. It runs better now plugged to the wall than powered by laptop.

But the fans themselves are just too loud. I will be getting a different brand soon. This one is just plain aweful

1 out of 5 eggsNothing but problems

Pros: Nothing.

Cons: Everything. Loud. Fan blades break easily. Power wheel loosens quickly. USB power cord unreliable. Impossible to open and fix. Metal top cover glued on, comes off almost immediately. Barely cools.

Other Thoughts: I have had nothing but problems with this cheaply block. The metal covering on top is glued on and started peeling off immediately. The power wheel loosed to the point of no longer working. There is NO way to open this pad to fix it. I had to break it open. The left and right fan had blades break off. The wheel loosened again. Finally the cord started connecting in only certain positions and then not at all. All while barely doing anything to actually keep my laptop cool. I did everything I could to keep it running and it resisted me every step of the way. I have NEVER encountered such a poorly built product. In the end it finally broke beyond repair after just under 6 months of ownership.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome Chill Mat

Pros: Great chill mat, I've had it for about a year and I use it wheneer my HP DV7 laptop is on. It is still working powerfully. I used the vacuum on it once to clean out the dust.

Cons: I do wish it provided replacement USB ports.

1 out of 5 eggsStay Away, Very poor quality

Pros: It definitely looks cool

Cons: I bought it in August for my GF's 17'' laptop. My GF liked the design and I thought it was a quality built unit. Now after 5 months of regular use, this thing is starting to failing apart. One of the three fans refused to work. At first it can be spun up with a little blow. Then it just completely died. The other two fans are making horrible noise even at low rpm. I tried to replace the fan inside, turns out this whole thing is just glued together. Once you take it apart you cant put it back together. So there is no way to fix it. So now this thing is just slowly turning into trash and I cant do anything to fix it without breaking it. Even when it was working the noise was unbearable.

Other Thoughts: I didnt buy it from newegg, which i wish I did. Since newegg at least have better customer service. Dont buy this cooling pad, you will find out how bad the quality is within a year, I promise.
