Beware! MSI P6N Platinum users
- Pros: Looks great. I had high hopes.
- Cons: As mentioned in previous reviews, the instructions are poorly written and the photos are essentially useless. Also, the base of the heatsink is unnecessarily large and ends up being oriented at a 45 degree angle to the processor. This was a deal breaker on my MSI P6N Platinum board since I could not avoid having the heatsink come over the top of one of the motherboard capacitors. I was struggling to get it to fit when I noticed it pressing down on one of them and starting to bend the capacitor and board! Yikes! Luckily, I posted without problem and am running nice and stable. I'm glad I noticed this right away but my concern is that people are used to the 775 heatsinks being a pain to install and will force it without realizing the problem.
- Other Thoughts: Make sure that you dry fit this thing first and check all clearances at the heatsink base to make sure you have plenty of room! If you've already put this on and had a really tough time with it, it might be worth looking closley at your board to make sure you're not crushing a capacitor without realizing it. I gave it a two since there is a real chance someone could seriously damage their board. Yes, you should always check a fit before install but the problem can be hard to spot unless you're specifically looking for it. Why is the heatsink base so huge anyway and what's the deal with the Funky Z clip?
Thermaltake delivers
- Pros: runs very cool, very quiet. Can't hear it at all. All copper for great heat conduction. Works great with me q6600.
- Cons: the stupid z shaped mount bracket doesn't need to look cool; it needs to work, the installation onto the processor was extremely difficult as the last pin just refuses to lock into place.
- Other Thoughts: I rarely ever use instruction guides, but thermaltake really needs to make the pictures a little bit bigger so people can actually see whats going on. The reason for this is the fan sits at an angle on the processor, not straight across. That surprised me at first as I wasnt sure if the fan would cover the whole cpu. It does though.
Good for the money
- Pros: All copper construction, and a heavy duty fan make for another great product from thermaltake. I really am impressed with the performance of this heatsink, at 35C idle, and about 42 under load, i'd reccomend this to anyone looking for a good cooling solution.
- Cons: The mounting isnt the easiest in the world, and hopefully you have clearance all around the heatsink mounts or your capacitors might get in the way. It's also hard to get the 775 mounting bracket actually in between the copper heat pipes and the copper base.
- Other Thoughts: All in all, i really like this product, and believe that for a sub-$50 cooling solution, you cant go wrong!
