Today’s powerful processors generate excess heat that can damage or destroy a system. Computer manufacturers include cooling solutions in their products to combat this heat, but all coolers are not created equal. Thermaltake’s A4017-01 CPU cooler is a low-cost step-up from the generic cooler that shipped with your CPU. Whether you are a custom builder with your eye on your budget, or a retail customer who wants to protect your investment, the A4017-01 offers a major improvement over a generic heatsink.
A mirror-polished copper base fits flush with the top of the processor chip and provides maximum efficiency in drawing away damaging heat and transferring it to the aluminum heatsink with its array of aluminum cooling fins. The heat is drawn away from this array by the reversed 92mm fan spinning on its long-lasting sleeved bearings at 2200 RPM.
The fan’s shroudless design eliminates noise caused by rebounding off of the shroud or the fins below it, thus generating only 18 dBA of noise – less than that of a human whisper and much less than more expensive fan options. It easily installs without tools onto any of the AMD Athlon 64, 64 FX, Sempron or Opteron processors designed to fit the 754, 939 or 940 socket architecture.
Other Thoughts: I've had a bunch of these for a while and every single one has had the fan eventually die. They get noisy, start slowing die and eventually just stop. Not a good thing.

Pros: Awesome heatsink, I purchased almost the same model, the tr2-r1 which they dont sell on newegg but it's pretty much the same thing. I swapped out the heatsink that came with my X2 4000+ because it couldn't cool my new 5600+ brisbane and this thing keeps the temps really stable. I was looking for a heatsink that's not too hard to install and this worked out great. The price here on newegg is 3 times cheaper then what I paid for this one here at a local computer store in sandy utah called EBCcomputers . Great hsf.
Cons: Nothing to really complain about but under a full load the temps have gotten up to 55º but nothing over that, after the cpu isn't in as much use the temps go down to 30-40

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Keeps processor cool as intended. Low price.
Cons: This A4017 was a replacement for a Thermaltake CL-P0296 (discontinued). The only differences between the two were the heatsinks and price.
The fans were identical. The P0296 with copper heatsink cost $25 while the 4017 was $12.
Both abruptly gave out / siezed up at 6 months.
While warranteed, it didn't seem cost worthy to pay shipping to send the P0296 back for replacement initially, especially since immediate replacement was necessary and waiting through the RMA process would cost me far more than simply buying another at the same price or less as soon as I heard the fan failing.
Other Thoughts: I got what I paid for. Cheap price, inferior product.
I generally like Thermaltake but am disappointed in this particular product and the similar product it replaced.
My own fault for not RMA-ing the first unit after replacing with the A4017. Even at the cost of shipping I'd at least have had a replacement on hand when it failed. Seems if you want to buy this item you need to be prepared for regular rotation of failures and RMAs so at least each time you'll only be paying shipping charges instead of buying new. But then again, how often do you want to have to replace this?

Pros: Make sure that the heat sink that you are buying will provide the cooling power that you need based on the build and the application of your system
Cons: overloading any component of your system, especially when it comes to the processor heat sink will caude premature death to said products
Other Thoughts: as to them all die'ing. everyone knows that everything electronic has a pre-prescribed time of operation. it is called Planned Obselecence. if these companies built items that lasted 20 years they would be out of business. having said that I expect like many that when I a product, I get my fair use out of it. what you are describing above is what happens when you spend $12 dollars on one of the most used and crucial components in any system. I have had great luck with Thermaltake and Arctic cooling.
