Zalman bills itself as the "quiet cooling solution" and they have a reputation for easy to use, reliable products. The CNPS 5700D ducted heat sink and fan combination demonstrates their innovation as well. The concept behind this unique design is as clear as the blue-tinted duct itself.
The inverted 65mm fan draws air upwards from the base of the cooler – pulling heat away from the CPU and the radial array of copper fins and blows it upwards through the duct. The duct can be swiveled to direct the warm air towards the nearest exhaust fan thereby efficiently dumping the surplus heat overboard rather than letting it drift around inside the case to heat up other components.
The fan can be set to operate in a "Silent Mode" which eliminates vibration and reduces noise to a mere 20dBA. The included Fan Mate controller lets you adjust speed to optimize and balance your fan's performance to your satisfaction. The built-in clip system lets the 5700D attach easily to the standard Socket 478 retention bracket of the Pentium 4 chip and the cooler can support those chips up to 2.8GHz.

solid HSF so far
- Pros: Under full load(about 76% CPU usage) it can keep my 3.4 Ghz prescott at 52.22degrees celsius with the fan speed at 1650 RPM's. (thats 120 degrees F) Thats almost no noise. If you want cooler temps, the manual fan speed control will let you throttle it up past 3000Rpm's, and that dropped it to 48.8 degrees C or 120 degrees F(under full load). At idle it kept temps between 37 and 39 degrees C,(around 100 degrees F) whether or not the fan speed was at 3000 Rpm's. When the fan is at full speed, it's still not that loud.
- Cons: Its big. It fit it into my case with ease because I have a large case, however, I can see this being difficult for those with more compact cases.
- Other Thoughts: This HSf doesn't have metal clips, but plastic ones that are not pressure clips. I haven't used this kind before, but it seems to be working okay.
I also used Arctic Silver 5 on my HSF which probably resulted in slightly lower temps. Get the arctic silver people, its worth it.
Excellent Unique Cooler
- Pros: Very Quiet, cools well at low speed
- Cons: The shroud provided is kinda hokey. This thing should be ducted directly to a case outlet for the highest efficiency.
- Other Thoughts: I have had this thing installed in my HTPC for several years. It's on a P4 2.4C that already runs cooler than the Prescott E series cpus. The provided duct is huge and there was no way it was going to fit in my MicroATX case, so I cut up the clear plastic packaging that it came in and built my own custom duct to the rear grille of the case. Since this fan pulls air up through heatsink, the hot air from the cpu now goes directly out of the case. I have a passive fanless VGA card, so this HSF makes my HTPC system nearly silent, fan-wise.

- Pros: Just installed today on an Intel D875PBX mobo, in a full-size case, without having to remove the motherboard. Initial cooling results are impressive - CPU idle temperature dropped about 10 degrees F, and idle case temperatures dropped by about 15 degrees F. Temperatures at load so far have been equivalently lower, as well. Since I have a P4 3.0GHz CPU, I didn't install Fan Mate.
- Cons: None so far, other than the cautionary warning on the Zalman website about the weight of the shroud exceeding the Intel maximum weight on the CPU. It's not a problem during actual operation, but I'd dismount the shroud before moving the computer downstairs, just to avoid the possibility of broken pins.
- Other Thoughts: I think the most important factors as to how pleased you'll be with this product are the size of your case (Mine is full-sized, so I'm happy) and how much air your case exhaust fans can move. The real benefit of this product is the plastic shroud, which aims hot air from the heatsink directly into your exhaust fans, instead of blowing it into your case. If your exhaust fans can move more air than the CPU fan blows at them, you'll be a happy camper.
And like many others here, I used Arctic Silver from Newegg, instead of the Zalman-supplied thermal grease, as well as the companion ArcticClean products to remove residue from the old fan. I add my recommendations to those already here.
Wow
- Pros: This fan looks amazing. The fact that it uses a 120mm case fan add so many possibilities. You could put a neat neon fan in there and make the whole duct light up...
- Cons: ...if this fan ws worth the time. Pentium Celeron D stayed at a balmy 61C to 73C! The recommended temp for my cpu is less then 60! Installed this thing five different times to fix the problem, different flavors of heat sink compound to no avail. Finally threw in my old cooler master turbine... Temps plummeted. This thing attracts dust at the base of the copper where it can touch your cpu! As for the fan mate 2.... Not enough options to where you can put it.
- Other Thoughts: There are so many other companies out there that make a much better product. I threw my old cooler master turbine on from an old machine and it dropped the temps to 41C with a high of 61C plus I could position the dial anywhere(with a little modding of course). Find something better!
New Sink on an Old Preppy
- Pros: Good Cooling at low RPM. Quieter then the Stock Fan. Overal comp case temp is down 4 degs (as seen by cpuid freeware). Processor temp still the same(cpuid). Installed easy. Like the Vent, no adjustments needed for my HP. Fan mate 2 installed nicely on the back of the case. Wires wre unsitely so no front case mount.
- Cons: Heavy. This fan exceeds the weight for my computers processor. Note that this only comes into affect when the comp is moved. Take off the vent to take off enough weight to safely move comp. Fan mate 2 is about useless with the award bios system. Fan must be ran in normal mode.
- Other Thoughts: HP Pavilion a1110n - Hp put an ASUS guppy motherboard in this particular computer. It came with a Celeron D "Prescot". The previous fan and heatsink were ASUS branded. This components ugrades my fan size from a 60mm to an 80mm. Basically broadening my options for installing a new fan. not many tools required. Standard geek set did it. Overall Buy it, Install it, replace the fan next time.
