5 out of 5 eggsGreat budget cooler

This review is from: SilverStone Argon Series AR02 CPU Cooler with 92mm Fan for socket LGA775/1155/1156/1366/2011, AM2/AM3/FM1/FM2

Pros: Allows me to overclock (overclocking achieved via Turbo Boost) an FX 8350.

Cons: Allows an FX 8350 to just barely Turbo Boost/run with overclocked Turbo Boost. I would not trust this to keep ANY AMD cool under 100% Turbo Boosted load for more than a few hours... Probably not a good idea to use this on an AMD video processing rig.

Other Thoughts: This is a cheap air cooler. There is enough heat dispensation and enough air flow via the fan. For serious AMD fanatics that want to overclock their FX to the limit, I'd go with water cooling. If you are using AMD and looking for an upgrade to the stock cooling and looking to achieve maxed out Turbo Boost, then this is for you. 5 egg score because it serves its purpose of keeping the FX cool and quiet.

5 out of 5 eggsAR02

This review is from: SilverStone Argon Series AR02 CPU Cooler with 92mm Fan for socket LGA775/1155/1156/1366/2011, AM2/AM3/FM1/FM2

Pros: Keeps my CPU 20-30 degrees C cooler than the stock Intel cooler, quiet for HTPC use, a perfect fit for my SilverStone GD09 case, doesn't block any RAM slots

Cons: I had to take apart my HTPC to install it, though I knew that ahead of time.

Other Thoughts: I built my HTPC in August of 2014 with a SilverStone GD09 case and an i5-4690K (overclocked to 4.1 GHz at 1.15 volts). I figured for HTPC use the stock Intel cooler would be fine, but the whole point of the 4690K was to have enough processing power to do on-the-fly blu-ray transcodes to a Roku or tablets with Emby or Plex at some point. With the stock CPU cooler it would have run too hot so I got this AR02. It dropped my idle temperature from 50C to 33C and even under stress tests it never goes beyond 70C (whereas with the stock cooler it would quickly ramp up to 100C and throttle). Most of the time I'm in the 30's now.

Some of the other low profile coolers I looked at would cover up the inboard RAM slots on my Asus Z97 mATX board, of few of which would have forced me to give up dual channel RAM. With the AR02 I can use all 4 RAM slots if I wish and not have to worry about RAM height. I set mine up in a pull configuration with the fan sending air out to the back of the case.

I'm very happy with this cooler and definitely recommend it if you don't have room for a larger one. Just don't go crazy with your overclock.

System:

SilverStone GD09
Rosewill 530 watt power supply
Asus Z97M-Plus mATX
Intel i5-4690K
2 x 4GB Kingston 1866MHz CL10 RAM
SanDisk Ultra Plus 128GB SSD (boot)
Seagate 2TB HDD (FLAC)
Seagate 5TB HDD (Blu-ray rips)
Pioneer BD-ROM
3 120mm case fans
Logitech K400 wireless keyboard/mouse

1 out of 5 eggsExtremely loud fan

This review is from: SilverStone Argon Series AR02 CPU Cooler with 92mm Fan for socket LGA775/1155/1156/1366/2011, AM2/AM3/FM1/FM2

Pros: The CPU hasn't melted.

Cons: The 92 mm cpu fan is horribly loud. It is much louder than a stock fan for typical cpu utilization.

1 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: SilverStone Argon Series AR02 CPU Cooler with 92mm Fan for socket LGA775/1155/1156/1366/2011, AM2/AM3/FM1/FM2

Pros: no idea didn't get to try it.

Cons: The standoff screws that go into the motherboard are ever so slightly too thick and so they cant be threaded in. Pretty disappointing and unsure whether I should send it back or try and track down the correct size of screws. Its a shame as its literally just a case of the threads being slightly too thick.

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet and cools well

This review is from: SilverStone Argon Series AR02 CPU Cooler with 92mm Fan for socket LGA775/1155/1156/1366/2011, AM2/AM3/FM1/FM2

Pros: Very quiet
Keeps cpu at a cool 45 degrees C
Good coolant for the cost

Cons: Somewhat bulky and lengthy process to mount but that's to be expected with proper cooling.

The back seems to cut it close to the board and may be too close for some boards. (works fine with mine)

Other Thoughts: Does its job and I'm happy with the purchase

3 out of 5 eggsFirst one had bad fan. Second one Coming.

This review is from: SilverStone Argon Series AR02 CPU Cooler with 92mm Fan for socket LGA775/1155/1156/1366/2011, AM2/AM3/FM1/FM2

Pros: With the replacement backing plate, it allows you to orient the cooler 90 degrees toward the back for AMD platforms. This allows the cooler to fit and blow out the back of my Silverstone HTPC case. Small enough to fit, strong enough to work.

Cons: Fan was imbalanced and rumbled like mad. The first one is obviously defective. Second one should be quiet like others have noted.

Other Thoughts: Docked it an egg for that fan getting through quality control. It is visible warped.

This review is from: SilverStone Argon Series AR02 CPU Cooler with 92mm Fan for socket LGA775/1155/1156/1366/2011, AM2/AM3/FM1/FM2

Pros: pretty small size doesn't obstruct the ram or anything. fits really nice and looks cool too. pretty efficient cooling even with just 1 fan pushing air into it. nice build quality and definitely worth the price

Cons: instructions aren't very good but most people should be able to figure it out
