Xigmatek goes beyond the conventional in their innovative, efficient thermal solutions. Instead of a copper base or bulky heat spreader, the HDT-S963 features a cutting edge solution for efficient thermal transference directly from the CPU – direct touch heat-pipes. These 3 U-shaped 6mm pure copper sealed tubes contain fluid which moves the heat upward into the array of large-surface area aluminum convection fins.
The fins are cooled by up to 54.6 CFM of cooling air from the 92mm fan spinning on rifle bearings. Even at its maximum 2800 RPM speed, the fan only generates 35 dBA of noise. This level can be lowered automatically, based on thermal demand utilizing the PWM functionality. Controlled by the BIOS, the fan's speed is adjusted automatically as the system detects changes in temperature.
A removable aluminum spoiler can be slotted into the rear of the fin array to direct some airflow upward or downward to cool adjacent motherboard components. The HDT-S963 sits upon vibration-eliminating rubber mounts which isolate any fan vibrations from the motherboard – ensuring quiet operation. A tool-less clip holds the cooler safely in place on any AMD Socket AM2, 754, 939 or 940 processor as well as all Intel Socket 775 CPUs.
Pros: good quality and construction. Direct-Touch heat pipes are key. (Heat transfer degrades significantly from one substance to the next). PWM fan.
Cons: Mounting only allows venting up/down, and not back towards case exhaust fan. A bit loud, just a bit. Aluminum fins are slipped on, not solder/welded to heat pipe.(ie degrades heat transfer potential)
Other Thoughts: modified case to allow fresh air from top down, this cooled my AMD X2 5000+ B.E. nearly 20C idle and under load to a stable 3325mhz overclock, @ 1.4625V. This achieved properly using the "-A1" switch to run 2 instances of Prime95, (one for each core, affinity 1/affinity 0). This makes a huge difference stressing the CPU, but this cooler made it possible at just $21 shipped after rebate. Considering even the least expensive coolers run almost the same price shipped, this ones a steal.
Soldered fins to the heat pipe or larger diameter pipe would improve performance, but significantly increase price. Fair trade off.
Chose this model over the HDT-S964 with a solid copper base, as the heat transfer from base to heat pipe is not as efficient as direct to pipe. The cooling bottle neck lies in ability of passing air to absorb heat, not in conducting the heat away.
Theres more expensive coolers, few legitimately cool better, but at $50+, u might as well buy a faster processor to beg

HEATSINK FAN COMBO RIGHT ON THE MONEY
Reviewed By: smileyface on 2/19/2008
Tech Level: high - Ownership: less than 1 day
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: I have read many reviews on heatsinks and decided to go with this particular model. This heatsink and fan combo with the rebate is a sure buy for those that want performance yet dont want to pay a High PRICE FOR a HEATSINK. My stock heatsink and fan 51-55 C drop down to 34-35C with this purchase. Also I went with Tuniq Grey thermal grease which I research before buying it and no regrets. Enough applications for a few heatsinks. The price was reasonable as compared to artic silver yet performance is not lacking.
Cons: None as of yet.
Other Thoughts: Don't hesitate to buy this Heatsink you will have no regrets.

Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: It keeps it much cooler then the intel stock, and it's worth it for the price.
Cons: It's a challenge to install, I spent about an hour doing it, but this was my first build. I really hate the pushpins, if you buy the mounting bracket, then I would say this is just about perfect.

Good for the money
Reviewed By: AdamB5000 on 1/22/2010
Tech Level: somewhat low - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: -Not expensive -Straight forward mounting process -Quiet -Cools well -> 13ºC improvement over stock HSF under 100% load
Cons: -Vertical orientation only -Fan mounting to sink can be challenging
Other Thoughts: For the money this cools very well. I paired it to my Gigabyte AM3 board & Phenom II X2 550BE. I ran some test with the default HSF and it hit a high of 57ºC under load. After changing the HSF it brought it down to 44ºC under 100% load after eight minutes! It idles at the same temp as the stock fan, but under load this shines.
Unfortunately I would have liked to mount this so the air blows front to back (and out the rear of the case) and not down to up or up to down. I knew this going in. I knew what I was getting, but this simple design change (or at least designing it with the option of changing the orientation) would be nice. Even blowing upward, this performs well.
The HSF is a little large, but that's to be expected with a nicer aftermarket cooler. I had no problem fitting it in my ATX case and no clearance issues on my Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P board. It's very close to memory slots 1&2, but my memory resides in 3&4.
If I could go back in time I'd purchase this ag

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: The minute I put it on temperatures dropped 15° Celsius. During game play my core 2 quad tops off at 43-45°. Easy to mount on 775 chip-set. Two screws, then the mounts snap on to m board.
Cons: none yet!
Other Thoughts: Good price to quality ratio. Well worth 22 bucks
