1 out of 5 eggsI wish I could give it ZERO eggs

This review is from: Phanteks PH-TC14CS 140mm UFB (Updraft Floating Balance) CPU Cooler

Pros: It looks really nice

Cons: This heat sink is extremely hard to install especially if you don't have a removable motherboard tray. The main problem is it does not have any kind of holes in the heat sink so you cant use the provided hex key from the top, you have to maneuver the key in from the side.

Other Thoughts: When I got it one of the fans was not functioning correctly, making lots of noise and not spinning like it should. However the largest problem was the manufacturer gave me no help what so ever and so this has already been returned to newegg.

Also I own a Noctua NH-C14, its a lot like this fan however the Noctua has holes in the radiator so you can easily mount it to your cpu/mobo.

5 out of 5 eggsLarge Cooler

This review is from: Phanteks PH-TC14CS 140mm UFB (Updraft Floating Balance) CPU Cooler

Pros: Nicely packaged, has the feel of quality, comes with everything needed for installation.

Cons: I am using an ASUS Crosshair V motherboard with Corsair Vengance RAM, the location of the memory is fairly standard but the additional height of the memory heatsink prohibited the installation of the bottom fan. Unless the memory slots are located outside of the heatsink footprint only memory that is standard height can be used for the 2 fan configuration. I am not holding that against Phanteks or the cooler in any way, it is just a consequence of the compontents I selected.

Other Thoughts: My motherboard, ASUS Crosshair V Formula, already had a CPU backplate. I simply had to remove the clips for the stock cooler and isntall the included clips. I thought I could get away with installing the cooler in the case, I was wrong, and it was faster and easier to remove the motherboard for installation. Which also gave me the opportunity to clean out the case. The directions and description both detail this as being an updraft cooler, drawing warm air away from the motherboard. Since I was unable to use the lower fan I elected to direct my fan towards the motherboard as the heatsinks around the CPU are designed to be cooled from the air off of the cooler. Without the bottom fan I was worried about the air flow across those heatsinks. I replaced a Corsair H60 Hydro Cooler for that reason, I originally had stability issues due to those heatsinks not being actively cooled and ended up zip tying a fan above the motherboard to push air across those heatsinks.

5 out of 5 eggsSatisfied

This review is from: Phanteks PH-TC14CS 140mm UFB (Updraft Floating Balance) CPU Cooler

Pros: -Very quiet
-Pretty good cooling (haven't really benchmarked it yet but I've yet to see it go over 44c on stock speeds of an AMD 5600K)
-Not very tall if you don't use a fan on the top
-Mounting kits are divided up in little bags with labels AMD set, Intel set, Accessories rather than jumbled all into one bag.
-Thermal paste comes in a tube rather than preapplied, so you can use your own if you don't want to use theirs.
-Tall RAM heatsinks are fine if you don't use the bottom fan.
-Cools components around socket (assuming your CPU is staying relatively cool)
-Great for people who want to line it up with an opening on the side of their case
-Splitter for both fans so you can control them both with the CPU connector on the motherboard. Provides a nice little shrouded extension to keep it neat too.
-Available in multiple colors, great for those of us concerned about aesthetics.

Cons: -Bottom fan cannot be centered because the heatpipes get in the way, unless you use a smaller fan. Not really a big deal considering the fan is already wider than the heatsink and sufficiently covers the surface anyways.
-Tall if you use the top fan, but even then it's probably about the same height as most horizontal coolers like the 212+
-Uses the stock AMD backplate, so you need to remove your motherboard if you don't the cutout in your case
-You probably want to remove the motherboard even if you have a cutout in your case as it's rather difficult to reach the mounting screws even with the L-shaped tool they give you for it.
-IT RATTLED FOR ME WHEN USING THE RUBBER STRIPS. *See other thoguhts
-Only comes with a single pair of rubber strips, so you can only use them on one of the two fans.
-The metal fan clips don't just slide into the screw holes on the fans. You need to put little rubber attachments on them first. It made attaching the clips kind of annoying, but on the upside this means the clips don't fall off the fans very easily which makes installing them to the heatsink easier.

Other Thoughts: All the reviews I've seen of this product show them installing the fans pointing downwards and pushing the air onto the motherboard. Makes sense if the CPU stays cool, the cool air at the bottom will cool your RAM and area around the motherboard while taking in cool air from any mesh on the side of your case. However, the installation guide very clearly tells you to orient the fans so air is being pushed through from the motherboards side. I chose this method as I figured that it wont really make much difference in cooling performance, there's no risk in the CPU getting warm and heating the components with warm air and the top of the cooler aligned nicely with my side duct, making ideal for exhausting warm air.
*When using the rubber/silicon strips, which I assume are for noise dampening, the fan would rattle. If I pushed gently on the fan it would get louder, so I can only assume that they were somehow actually pushing the fan against the heatsink. The only thing I can figure is that they caused the fan to curve slightly inwards at the center. Removing them got rid of the rattle instantly. Not a really big deal because the fans are already pretty darn quiet at 800 RPM.

5 out of 5 eggssweeet cooler.

This review is from: Phanteks PH-TC14CS 140mm UFB (Updraft Floating Balance) CPU Cooler

Pros: Fans are easy to mount, and keeps cpu cooler than MB at idle. MB is 30c and cpu at 27c. Kinda awsome. I was able to unclip the bottom fan and slide it over a bit to INSTALL more ram, without removing cooler. It was hyper x ram, fit with no problems. Large contact plate, way oversize for 1155, thats good though.

Cons: Best for a new build, as you "must" remove MB! Pain, but you know, faster if you just take it out.

Other Thoughts: Sometimes when my IB 3570k goes under sudden load, temp will spike from 28c to 40c then plummet to below idle temp before stabilizing. Must be a heat pipe thing. without overclocking i havnt seen my cpu temp above 40c. Stock intel hs would get up to 55c pretty quick.
