When surround sound isn't necessary and space is at premium but you still want great sound the X-140 speaker system from Logitech is a great solution. Dual drivers provide crisp highs and powerful lows.
A headphone jack lets you listen in private. The aux in jack lets you plug in an MP3 or CD player without unplugging the speakers from your computer.
Pros: Impressive sound for the price. You will never confuse these speakers with really good ones, but the sound is far better than the cheap price indicates. They even have decent bass at lower volumes. Good for a smaller room, not so hot for really blasting your tunes.
Other good points: The power plug is a normal plug, not a wart. The volume and tone controls are on the front of the right channel speaker and work well.
Cons: The sound gets less wonderful at high volumes. Then again, what do you expect? No woofer = no pulverizing bass. To impress your friends and annoy your neighbors, you need to spend more.
There is also a design flaw on the cable management front. Logitech got the power plug right, but not the audio cable. The power cable connects to the right speaker, the audio cable to the left. That means you need to fish cables from both speakers beneath your desk. If both power and audio connected to the same speaker, there would be less clutter. A minor point, but Logitech could do better.

Pros: Great sound and more than adequate volume when considering the size and cost. Would buy again. Very minimal speaker hiss - I've heard much worse out of little cheap speakers.
Cons: None! Some people may not like the "halloween orange" LED, as another reviewer put it, but I dig it. Nice change of pace from blue LEDs.

Pros: GREAT SPEAKERS! I have had these for a while, and they are capable of being quite loud without any distortion. I have been wanting to get a pair for my TV that has low quality speakers.
Cons: Base response is a little weak the louder they get, but is still quite good considering there is no sub.
Other Thoughts: A must for all laptop users who want quality sound from their computer. I have yet to find a better pair of speakers!

Pros: Great sound for the price. I can honestly say that paying 27 bucks for these babies are a steal. Does what it needs to do. Sound is clear across the lows, mids and highs.
Cons: N/A
Other Thoughts: Can't really go wrong with these speakers. Price is great and of course, newegg shipping is great!

decent for the price

Pros: great aesthetics and build quality, decent mid-range
Cons: wire layout is a bit funky, minimal bass
Other Thoughts: using this paired with a cheap iphone dock as a surprisingly decent speaker set. even considering the lack of a separate subwoofer there is virtually no bass/lowend at all in the audio, which pales compared to an old 2.0 altec-lansing speaker. great for spoken word/talk radio/podcasts, okay for music so long as you have tempered expectations.
