Bose delivers the immersive video watching experience of a 5.1-channel surround sound system without having to clutter your desk with all those speakers. The TrueSpace® surround digital processing circuitry creates it from two elegant desktop speakers and an Acoustimass® module. The desktop speakers come with stands to put them at the right height for a great listening experience.
Setup is easy— the Acoustimass module attaches to your computer with a USB cable so you don’t have to worry about putting multiple plugs in the right ports. The desktop speakers then attach to the Accoustimass module with color-coded plugs. There is also a control pod with a volume control, headphone jack, Aux jack and mute button.
The magnetically shielded speakers are designed to work next to your monitor without interference. The signals that they get from the controller in the Acoustimass module have been tuned by the integrated signal processing and active equalization for true to the original recording sounds at almost any volume level. The compression circuitry minimizes distortion at high volumes, so go ahead and turn it up.
Pros: Extremely clear sound. Great bass. A good 5.1 experience without the complexity and bulk of a 5.1 system. Hook up is a snap. VERY well made. Fit and finish is superb.
Cons: Expensive. They don't give a TRUE 5.1 sound, but far better than my previous 2.1 system.
Other Thoughts: I bought direct before Newegg started selling them. I love them. They were a lot of money, but I was looking in the $300 range anyway, so I didn't spend much more. The sound is hard to explain; it's not a TRUE 5.1 sound but much fuller than a 2.1 sound. If I'm centered exactly between the speakers I'd almost swear it was a 5.1 system. Get off center though and it's easier to tell it's not. 4 eggs due to expensive.

Update

Pros: Update for below: Still sounds great. I push these things constantly, maxing the volume knob out and my computer volume to 85. Sounds crystal clear. The bass is adaptive, doesn't do that vibrating sound deal when it gets too loud. It knows its limits and stops there, so once you crank it up, the mid and high range levels climb while the bass stays at the same spot. No big deal for me.
Recently, i used them as a music center for a lan party, fully cranked, full bass, for about 18 hours straight, with a 1 hour pause about 14 hours in for our breakfast run and 2 30 second pauses for phone calls. The worst thing that happened was the safety kicking in that lowers the volume to prevent overheating. It only dropped the volume about 10 decibels though. No big deal. We used to use an Altec Lans***, but now all the people at the lan party want to use these for the music. They liked how loud they went with no distortion or squeals.
Cons: I hate it when people give advice that has nothing to do with a product. These speakers do NOT need ANY USB power. You do need USB 2.0 though, but for the speed. I know that you do not need a 500 watt power supply because im using a 350 just fine. The crackling/cutting sound people are reporting is due to the USB controller. These speakers, nomatter what they are doing, take 57% of the USB 2.0 bandwidth. USB 2.0 runs at 480mbps, so 57% is about 250mbps. You can NOT use these speakers through a USB hub, not even 2.0. Not enough bandwidth. And do not use the same USB controller that these speakers are using with something like an external USB hard drive. As for the 500 watt power supply, these speakers plug directly into a 120 volt household outlet. They pull absolutely no power through the USB port. Check the Device Manager, 0mA.
Other Thoughts: My build: Stock HP m9150f media center PC. 2 Seagate 360GB SATA 3.0 hard drives, DVD R/W light scribe SATA drive, HDDVD SATA drive, NVIDIA 8500GT, Core 2 Quadro @ 2.4ghz, three 4 port USB2.0 hubs (not on the same channel as the speakers), 2 external USB hard drives (500GB and 120GB), 3 flash cards, webcam, USB printer, bluetooth keyboard w/ USB adapter, Logitech MX Revolution wireless mouse (on the same channel as the speakers, so the speakers and the mouse have a dedicated channel), a Zune, and a USB Wireless G adapter. I use all of the USB devices at once, and i never have any problems with the speakers. I even put it in a worst case scenario, all hard drives accessing, both CD drives, all 3 flash cards, maxed out CPU, graphics card diagnostic (extreme power demanding), and i still was able to play my music. No clicking, skipping, anything.
Please people, understand that these speakers need no special power supply. Just a USB 2.0 channel dedicated to them, and a 120 volt outlet.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: After doing a lot of reading and searching for all kinds of speakers i'm glad i went with the Companion 5. All of our music is stored on the computer and the speakers we had were just not cutting it. Now that we have these hooked up, listening to music in our apartment is enjoyable once again. They bring it to life, allowing you to enjoy every little intricacy of each song - all ranges are amazing. The whole setup is also very aesthetically pleasing, and i love the 'control pod' with it's touch sensitive on/off switch and 'turntable' style volume control. Very easy USB connection and easy setup on Windows 7.
Cons: Not really a con but the control for the 'Acoustimass' unit is in an awkward place on the back of the unit for how i have it setup. But, to be honest, i'd rather have it where it is than on the front of the unit where it might take away from its good looks.
Other Thoughts: These things are LOUD! And with no loss of audio quality when cranked to the max. My neighbors hate me even more now ;) especially when i first turned them on and was pumping PanterA at full level.

Pros: This system can be placed at its highest volume (pretty loud) without losing its quality..very professional Company. Highs don't clip and lows don't distort mids and highs. This is a well designed set.
Cons: The fact that people look for this system to be as BASSED as a 15inch sub?....but other than that...this is an amazing system hands down and anyone with sound smarts will know it. IF YOUR ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO THINK THE INSANE BASS IS BETTER THAN QUALITY SOUND,....(for example when u see a 98 civic runnin with so much bass you cant hear lyrics) these wont tickle your fancy...
Other Thoughts: To the user who said "no lows no highs" if your looking for that system to bang the lows like a yorkville concert series sub woofer maybe you wanna look for larger more complicated systems that include the need of spending hundreds on amplifiers and more speakers to balance the sound...such as tweeters and mid toners and subwoofers. I Dj-ed for parties, clubs, and outdoor events and even have 4 systems with professional systems. And i know what im saying when I say, this system is well worth its price..and im not even going to answer the one who compared this system to the logitech surround system...because logitech HAS ALOT TO LEARN ABOUT QUALITY before they can be on the same page as bose, boston, and Bang & Olufsen. Logitech is a good cheap alternative, and have all the respect well earned for their products, but for mouses keyboards and webcams and other plug and plays...and yes...Bose IS one of the best in the market and a name to be proud of. Good job bose. I am indeed impressed.

Pros: good subwoofer, and easy control. Compact design
Cons: Sounds awful. Notice the specs don't give a power gauge or any idea what the volume is like. I didn't find anything on the bose site. They are okay for personal use if you listen to classical music, but for the life of my I don't know anyone who does. estimated, I would say they have maybe a 50W total system power, and are still more expensive than the logitech z-5500, which is 500 watts AND THX CERTIFIED. Where did the mid-level range go? Who knows! Awful speakers
Other Thoughts: No Bose system is THX certified, nor do any of them sound good. Awful speakers. Did I mention they suck?
