2 out of 5 eggsFair useless

Pros: - Two ports

Cons: - Does not include necessary USB 2.0 cable to supply power; card really doesn't work without it
- Speeds are nowhere near USB 3.0; sometimes even less that 2.0
- Exterior ports are raised so high it covered some of the laptops port

Other Thoughts: Since it doesn't include a necessary component, this card barely works. I wish I'd listened to the other reviews and not bought this.

2 out of 5 eggsNot the speed anyone would like to see

Pros: drivers readily available on the website

works with win7 64bit updated

Cons: not going the speed of 100mbits per second or anywhere near it.

it posts at first 100 MB/second the first few 10 secs, then goes down down down and stays at 24.6MB/second in windows transfer, transfering 22GB of music from usb 3.0 seagate external to dell m1530 laptop.
takes 14 minutes to copy 22.0 GB of mp3 files.

only 36 MB/second "real world transfer" to copy same 22GB mp3 music from 7200 rpm hard drive on Dell vostro 3700 onto seagate 3TB usb 3.0 external (with power brick) - Expansion Desktop - STBV3000100

is the bottleneck of bandwidth/througput because of the expresscard port?

towards the last 5mins of the transfer from external to laptop, the speed is down to 19.3 MB/second...........i'm baffled, this isn't right speed at all! the card uses a NEC chip, i'm going to keep trying these tests to see if it's the card itself or the external drive, which is brand new.

Other Thoughts: i didn't buy from newegg, but elsewhere, but newegg sells it and i'm wanting to contribute my experience with this card to new buyers.

i was hoping to copy 22gb of files in 10 minutes to and from the external hard drive but it takes 20mins for transfer from laptop to usb, and 14mins to copy the same amount of data to a different dell laptop system.

the dell vostro 3700 is an i5 2.4ghz with western digital black 7200rpm drive,
the dell xps m1530 is intel T9300 @ 2.5ghz dual core with hitachi 7200 rpm 500gb hard drive.

1 out of 5 eggsSevere Problems Dell XPS M1530

Pros: Price.

Cons: Doesn't work, crashes system worse than a blue screen, pure hardware #fail. Doesn't stay seated. Doesn't lock in place. CRASHES SYSTEM. Dell XPS M1530 running Win7 fully patched.

Other Thoughts: I'm hoping someone gets a driver update, but for now, I can't use this product at all. I've had really good experiences with their other products, so I'm a bit surprised, and I'm waiting to hear from their tech people.

2 out of 5 eggsCorrection re. Other Review

Pros: (see below)

Cons: (see below)

Other Thoughts: Information offered by reviewer "FAST FAST FAST" is nonsensical. Perhaps s/he mistook a megabyte for a gigabyte. In practice a GB goes across SATA in about 30 seconds (not "a few minutes, but.. Whatever.) In any case, USB 3.0, with a theoretical capacity of 5Gb/sec, can *not* shuttle 1GB in 5-6 seconds. Nor could any single consumer-level device I can think of send or receive that. (Hello, an entire DVD? Five-to-six seconds flat?) Someday, but not today, and not using this thing!

2 out of 5 eggsMeh... Needs to Be Better.

Pros: Works. No apparent driver issues. Twice-as-fast as USB 2.0 (but "only"; see below).

Cons: Performance is unacceptable. SATA drives which post 130MB/s via HDTach through the Ineo USB 3.0 dock post *HALF* that through this adapter. That's a pretty severe hit! It's still almost twice what USB 2.0 provides, but half what it should be. I hope others post "real" details about comparable products, and you might consider buying something else. Finally, as others have noticed, the "dongle"-end is just way clumsy. I would be willing to pay a few more bucks for a "break-away" breakout connector (with two pig-tailed female USB sockets, which would not protrude so obstructionately) and so should everyone else.

Other Thoughts: StarTech is the "blue-collar factory worker" of the add-on world. Stuff always works adequately, and is always consistently-but-unexceptionally executed. It's a real company, been around for years, and with decent end-user support (this is important). But this device should have been better engineered. Note to StarTech: "Do better!"

2 out of 5 eggsNo Power Adapter

Pros: Good price. Works as advertised for large external drives altough I had issues with the driver initially with Win7-32 machine.

Cons: No power adapter. So, it is useless with small form factor, .2.5" drives because it can not provide enough current. Tech support wasn't helpful at all. They gave the specs for adaptor, but couldn't give a vendor or sku# other than "try Radio-Shack" advise. Ended up spending close to $30 more to find the right adapter.

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't provide advertised power per port natively

Pros: Should provide USB 3 if it delivered enough power as advertised

Cons: Advertised to deliver 900mA to each port - should be plenty power to power a 2.5" USB 3 hard drive... but apparently not, because my new USB 3 drive appears to not have enough power to function in this card. That drive is powered fine in a plain old USB 2 plug. Says there's a power adapter port and there is, just no actual power adapter is included - that's optional.

Other Thoughts: The size of this thing is bulky and when plugged in seems somewhat flimsy. The bulk head extends a good 1/4 inch out from laptop - leaving only the thin card itself as the only are touching the laptop. That cantilevering makes the device seem less secure or stable

5 out of 5 eggsFAST FAST FAST

Pros: VERY VERY FAST. I tested a 1 GB file on an external 2.5 5400. USB 2.0 took about 6-7 minutes, give or take a few. ESATA took about 3 minutes. USB 3.0 took a whopping 5-6 seconds to copy. Absolutely incredible. The only thing I know plug in my 2.0 is my notebook cooler and mouse.

Cons: I just wished that it was flushed with the bezel. It sticks pretty far out.

Other Thoughts: I will never use usb 2.0 again for file transfer, I love 3.0.
