5 out of 5 eggsThis thing rocks

Pros: I didn't even have to install drivers, Win 7 just picked it up.
Port multiplier is a nice feature if you are running JBOD enclosure.
The two esata ports is helpful when friends come over for media swaps.
I don't have any sata 6gig drives to test the real max speed of this thing but when transferring to my SSD's a base speed is at least 80megs/sec.

Cons: Do they put PCI express in laptops anymore?

4 out of 5 eggsRe: Lenovo Y550P

Pros: The card is okay. It is just my laptop and win7 64

Whatever drives are attached to esata port and Startech card will show up after reboot.

Faster than USB 3 by 25-30%

Cons: Will sometimes reboot by itself if you turn off or swap any already connected drive.

Other Thoughts: need to buy a better laptop that doesn't come with hidden hardware problems..

1 out of 5 eggsProblems with Lenovo Y550P

Pros: It works after constant fiddling

It's the laptop esata port and associated Intel matrix driver that is causing the problem. Or just some bad engineering in the laptop hardware. No port multiplier but it doesn't work all that well using a single dribe either..

Cons: then only after having to mess with cables, inserting drives in adapter, removing them, trips to disk management that don't help..

The Intel Matrix driver implementation under win64 ultimate on this laptop is not satisfactory to me at all after spending a lot of time looking for solutions. Returned.

Other Thoughts: USB 3 probably a better solution until thunderbolt and a new mac next year.

Thank you as always, Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent eSATA controller card

Pros: - works perfectly fine with SATA II external drives
- fast, very fast, considering my laptop has built-in limitation for ExpressCards throughtput to 2.5 Gbps
- works in hot plug mode in Windows 7, no need to reboot (it may require a few steps related to system configuration, but it works nevertheless)
- no cheaping out here - this package includes a plastic stabilizer that helps keep the StarTech Express card in place, despite the fact that just right beneath it my Toshiba Q875 laptop has its BluRay drive installed ("great" design, Toshiba!) - i used to have Rosewill eSATA ExpressCard, and it didn't include the stabilizer, causing the card to occassionally disconnect if I used eject button on the BluRay drive and inadvertently shifted the card

Cons: - took some effort to install drivers,
- price isn't really a con - considering the card stabilizer as standard feature
- can't really utilize full potential of SATA III with this card, a SATA III 2TB WD Black Caviar drive used with Rosewill external enclosure, but it's darn fast anyway. probably subject to WD's 64MB cache and 7200rpm.

Other Thoughts: if there was competition to this card, the price would certainly drop from $45 now to maybe $25. but at least i got 3 eSATA ports on my laptop right now, and the extra $20 is worth the peace of mind.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -2 ports
-decent speed (see other thoughts)

Cons: -no hot-plugging. (see other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: although i haven't done a solid benchmark, i know it gets at least 100MB/s.

plugging in or/and unplugging the card or cables results in a blue screen of death. I haven't tried it under Linux but i suspect Linux would have better results

5 out of 5 eggsExceeded Expectations

Pros: Running a Toshiba Satellite A205 laptop (Intel Dual Core 1.8GHz) with Linux Fedora 14. Just got this device, plugged it into the Toshiba ExpressCard slot and it just worked with no configuration. Connected 2 hard drives to this device (through Tableau SATA Forensic Bridges, but that is not important). Doing a Linux dd (bit by bit copy) of one drive to the other and each drive is averaging 60 MB (megabytes) per second throughput (as measure via Linux iostat). Would have expected more in the 30s or 40s with both drives going.

Cons: By design it seems ExpressCard slots are not the most structurally sound, so must be careful if moving the laptop while drives are connected.

Other Thoughts: Again Newegg is terrific. Ordered and some other stuff before noon and it was all here the next day at 12:30 pm, even though selected 3 day shipping.

5 out of 5 eggsAnother nice product from StarTech

Pros: Supports eSATA 6GB/s, two ports, 34mm format ExpressCard. Comes with drivers, but Win7 supports it natively. Handy! Worked first time I installed it in my Toshiba Satellite running Vista Home Premium. I use it with an external enclosure for a WD Scorpio Black (7200RPM) drive.

Cons: Doesn't come with a cable (not really a con though).

Other Thoughts: This eSATA 6GB/s ExpressCard would be excellent for use with an external SSD.
